Wow! This is just a way cool program! I'd love to add a icon to my "Today" page on my HTC touch. Anyone know how to do that? John K2QY

observations after a couple of weeks.

Dear Lynn and any others lurking around, After using this program a few weeks and trying it off and on, AND getting my local digi owner to change his settings for complete 2way text messaging all I can say is WOW! This is really cool. No problems with the program once I got used to what the buttons all do and set a hot button (the camera) on my HTC Touch (SPRINT). Once the local digi owner changed settings for phone->a field radio I realized the full potential of text messaging on APRS. I tried texting a friend last night and it "just knocked his socks off". We moved to a voice channel and chatted quite a while about phone->radio and back messaging. Thanks again, John K2QY

Installed APRSISCE6P090811
2
Greetings! I downloaded and installed APRSISCE6P090811 on my HP iPAQ 6955 with WM5. It appears to functioning correctly. I have been able to send messages from the HP to the APRS group. There is a 'small' issue with the callsigns being displayed on the left side of the screen -- only able to see the first three (3) digits available. I can post a screen shot tomorrow if requested. The APRS-IS is a worthy tool for ARES use on a pocket PC. Thanking-you in advance. 73 de James, VE2KHC Montreal, Canada --------------------------------------------------------------------------- James Keep, VE2KHC RAC Certified Emergency Coordinator (EC) – Vaudreuil-Soulanges ARES FN25xj 514-945-2120 http://aprs.fi/?call=VE2KHC

HP iPAQ 6955 screen shots uploaded to Photo section
Dear Lynn, Greetings! I have enclosed two (2) pictures of APRISCE latest version; the satellite section of the screen works fine. It's the delay with taking the picture while working from my desk… Thanks! 73 de James, VE2KHC P.S. From the HP brochure: "The HP iPAQ hw6900 Mobile Messenger utilizes a 3.0" transflective TFT display, with 240 x 240 resolution, 64K colors, LED backlight (with power saver mode)."

SSID Standards
I saw this go by on another APRS mailing list (UI-View) back on 8/8/2008: I've chosen -12 for my APRSISCE as it is definitely portable and may someday actually go via RF. -10 seems more for non-mobile Internet clients like WinLink and UI-View. APRS-IS client - quick questions
2
Kevin Jensen wrote: If you don't mind random delays in getting answers, I certainly don't mind answering them! I hope you don't mind that I copied the answer to the group so that others might benefit. In my experience, when the phone turns "off" in battery save mode, the GPS is also turned off. My application doesn't muck at all with power settings, so beaconing will stop, but incoming APRS-IS updates will continue. The battery with GPS and APRS-IS active will drain quite quickly. I always plug my phone into a power adapter in the car and only turn off the power savings timer when I KNOW I want to continue tracking. Once in power saver with only a modest-radius APRS-IS feed active, it'll last longer, but still MUCH less than if the client itself were closed or APRS-IS disabled. The client also transmits battery level telemetry. You can see mine at: http://aprs.fi/telemetry/KJ4ERJ-12 The week view has some good days in it and the month or year view shows just how mean I've been to my battery. I'm now running an extended capacity battery on my AT&T Tilt. I'm happy with the battery life (3-4 hours with full APRS-IS and GPS, 6 hours with only APRS-IS), but I don't like the fact that it no longer fits in my belt clip. Yes, the client relies on a GPSapi-supported GPS unit and sends/receives lots of data so an unlimited plan is highly recommended. The application will continue to run in the background, but the ability to maintain a data connection while receiving calls is up to the cellular provider and the infrastructure around you. I've had calls go straight to voice-mail in some cells. I've had the data connection stop when the phone rang and resume when I terminated the voice call. And I've had the data connection continue operating while talking on the phone. And these were all on the SAME phone, just in different geographical areas. New user, seems to be working fine.

Howdy folks, I just downloaded the 090811 build & installed it on my ATT Tilt (aka Kaiser/Tytn II). Seems to be working just fine -- it tracked me to work, anyway. http://aprs.fi/?call=AB8JC-12&mt=m&z=11&timerange=10800 Thanks for the software, Lynn! Steve AB8JC

10/16/2009 Release Notes
2
Here's what's new in APRSISCE6P091016.zip 1) The Tile prefetcher now has a better timeout. I also run two concurrent threads (on the Windows Mobile platform) so the tiles fetch a bit faster. 2) Bad tile files are now removed from the device when they are detected. Still to come is a tile ager and purger. 3) On larger screen devices, Icons will now grow to double size for better clarity (complements Noel W8TVI) 4) The circle stations redraw has been optimized, especially if a flood of packets arrives in a short span of time. 5) You can now center the screen on an arbitrary station. Just select Center from a station's popup menu. Double-clicking on the heading rectangle offers to center back on you. If the station you're centered on moves, the map moves to keep it centered. If the centered station ages out and is replaced, the center will automatically move back to you. 6) Both the OpenStreetMap fetcher and the APRS-IS server connection cache the most recently resolved DNS name for faster connects. 7) Messages sent with acks requested are now buffered until the ack is received. The message rectangle turns yellow while there are ack-pending messages. Access them for retry or cancel via Menu/Messages/Pending Messages (disabled when none are pending). When expected acks are received, the Ack popup is suppressed. Only unexpected or duplicate Acks will generate a popup. 8) Battery voltage telemetry is now disablable (requested by Jason, K2ENG). Battery voltage is still monitored and displayed in the slider. 9) Other stations running APRSISCE are highlighted in pale yellow on the scrolling stations list. You can request seeing others by adding u/APWM* to your filter text. (That's how some of you get messages from me seemingly out of the blue!) 10) Changed overlay symbol text color on Number Diamonds (Digi and HF Gateway). 11) Optimized redrawing to decrease system load when lots of station updates come in quickly. This is really important when you monitor a large radius or a busy area. (This may slow updates down to 2 per second, but that seems fast enough). 12) Increased cached fonts and support BOLD display of symbol overlays. 13) Reversed Reply and Dismiss when messages are received to match the Dismiss placement of Windows Mobile appointment reminders. 14) Tracks are now attached to their generating station even when zooming way out (they used to detach if you zoom out too far). 15) Zooming out to extreme zoom now sticks the stations where they belong. You can now zoom out to an entire world view (not that the phone platform can handle seeing all of that, but it's pretty neat when watching all APRSISCE users!) 16) When centering on another station, APRSISCE automatically adds a friend filter using the configured radius around them. This can cause more stations and map sections to be active, also benefiting from being able to zoom further out. The original filter is restored when you move yourself back to the center. 17) The configuration dialog now supports setting your symbol! Just click on the symbol below the Genius(tm) button. Select your table (Primary, Alternate, or Overlay) and then spin the spinner(s) and watch the symbol and name change. Remember that not all clients support overlays on all symbols! (Most recently requested by Jason, K2ENG). 18) Overlays are now drawn MUCH more clearly on symbols of various sizes. Play with them in the Configuration Dialog and see them in the circle and in the scrolling station list. 19) The FIRST transmission now includes the satelite counts like GotFix always has. 20) Sending an APRS message that starts with ? will suppress the request for an ack. This seems to be necessary to talk to some servers. If you need an ack on a ? message (like sending ? to CQSERV), enter it as <space>? and the ack will be requested. 21) If centering on another station, other station Information popups will show Rel: nnnmi XXX as in distance and bearing from the center. If you are centered, it still displays Pos: nnnmi XXX as the distance and bearing from YOU. 22) The Spd: nnnmph is now actually displayi

KJ4ERJ-SSIDs
Someone inquired about my KJ4ERJ-AP callsign, so I thought I'd give you all a list of the -SSIDs I use, just in case you ever receive a message from one of them. Rest assured, ALL KJ4ERJ-xx are really me (in one shape or form). (Yes, this is THE Lynn as I've been referred to recently by two completely independent people). (And no, I don't have an ego as large as Richard Heene. I'm just trying to further APRS by providing a new, update-able, APRS-IS client application.) KJ4ERJ - My original IGate, now used for testing and comparing the receive abilities of various TNC/Radio combinations vs my primary IGate. This is actually a javAPRSsrv IGate callsign related to -5 and whatever TNC I hook it up to. KJ4ERJ-1 - Don't remember what I used this one for, but it's been idle for 9 months KJ4ERJ-2 - My primary javAPRSsrv IGate software (related to -6 & -7) KJ4ERJ-5 - APRS-IS access callsign for my original IGate KJ4ERJ (w/o SSID) KJ4ERJ-6 - APRS-IS access callsign for my primary IGate KJ4ERJ-2 (and -7) KJ4ERJ-7 - TinyTrak4/Icom IC-T22A (HT) on a copper cactus at 20' as my primary IGate KJ4ERJ-8 - Kenwood D7 mobile HT in my car on a 1/4 wave Hershey Kiss antenna (on loan from AI4GK) KJ4ERJ-9 - Alinco DR-135/T2-135/Nuvi350 in my car on a 5/8 wave dual bander KJ4ERJ-10 - UI-View software on my laptop. Interfaces via -IS normally, but may go mobile via some TNC in the future. KJ4ERJ-12 - APRSISCE for Windows Mobile on my AT&T Tilt phone. This is nearly always on, and nearly always with me. KJ4ERJ-14 - Formerly an Alinco DR-135/T2-135/Nuvi350 in wife's van. This is now KJ4OVQ-9 now that she is licensed! KJ4ERJ-15 - Unfiltered feed APRS-IS monitor instance of APRSIS32 (a soon-to-be-released APRSISCE for Windows) KJ4ERJ-3 - I don't think I've used this one yet! KJ4ERJ-4 - Ditto on the not-used-yet KJ4ERJ-11 - Haven't used this one yet KJ4ERJ-13 - Nope, haven't used it either That's the end of the RF-legal SSIDs. The following -SSIDs are used for exclusively APRS-IS Internet access: KJ4ERJ-AP - APRSIS32 testing instance monitoring APRSISCE for Windows Mobile users via u/APWM* filter. I watch the behavior of various tracks to validate (or invalidate) features of the client as you all move around. It's easier (especially in the latest version with the Message option in the station popup menu) to send you a message from this one. KJ4ERJ-BK - Originally an APRSIS32 monitoring an APRS-tracked bike ride in the Pacific NorthWest, but re-purposed to monitoring Planet Earth for posted Earthquakes and Hurricanes (I DO live in Florida, after all). I do this with a filter of s/@/@Q and a configured lat/lon just off of 0/0. KJ4ERJ-SA - An APRS-IS Satellite monitor using APRSIS32 via a filter of s/S/S and also a configured lat/lon just off of 0/0. KJ4ERJ-?? - There's another -SSID I've used for Xastir running in a VM, but I really don't remember which one it was/is and I haven't re-installed VmWare on my laptop since upgrading it to Windows 7 RTM. Ok, so you're wondering when you can get a copy of APRSIS32 for Windows? I need to implement a way to configure your lat/lon without manually editing the XML configuration file. I'd also like to figure out a way to allow multiple windows (with custom filters) from a single APRSIS32 instance with a single APRS-IS connection running the merged filters of all window instances. Right now, I run my own local javAPRSsrvr server with a single full feed from which I filter the various feeds for my APRSIS32 instances. This works for me, but I really want a better way to handle multiple views with a single feed. For those of you familiar with UI-View's "local server", that's what I'm shooting for within APRSIS32, but with an automatic filter built from the various views. Consider the power of this with the new "center on" function of APRSISCE and you'll see where I'm headed! I've even considered a full-screen version that moves the circles around and overlaps/merges them as centered stations get close enough provided the circles are running a shared zoom. That's way-out-there, blue-sky thinking at the moment though. L

Windows Mobile (WM5 or 6) and running APRSISCE continuous
Just some tips on how to run Winodws Mobile and to keep the APRSISCE application running continuous. 1) Turn off power save mode when plugged in. Typically you would have your cellphone plugged into a power outlet in the car to keep the application running, so why not just turn off any power save mode. 2) Turn off the AUTOMATIC LOCK tool in Windows Mobile. The locking tool seems to also deactivate any application running. 3) Turn off the AUTOMATIC SCREEN DIMMING tool. It also seems to deactivate any application running. Make sure you do not turn the screen off, as that puts applications in suspend. I will be doing more testing with a screen blanker, and seeing how long the power can last with the APRSISCE running continuous.

Metric system
2
Is it possible to switch units to metric system? I'm also change path for cached OSM maps to storage card in xml, is it possible to make this directly in menu in next version? Also is missing for me possibility for free moving on map (like google maps on wm) without restrictions on aprs station. Aprsisce seems by great plug and play program on wm for novice and lazy nonradio aprs hams like me :) In Slovakia we have problems with only few Radio gate, therefore is only few people on aprs and aprsisce seems to be way for expansion aprs in Slovakia... I play little bit also with aprsce / AGW CE and aprsisce is very easy for setting and using for me. Sorry for my English, i don't have problem with reading, but with writing something :)

Breadcrumb tool - any better ones?

wake up from battery save mode
7
Lynn - thanks for a great application. I am looking for some kind of utility that would wake up the phone from battery saver mode, to allow a beacon of my position. since phones naturally want to go to battery save mode, there must be some application that will bring my data connection up, activate aprsisce and then put the phone back to sleep. maybe once every five, ten or twenty minutes; assuming i am on battery power, and assuming i have a data connection. alternatively, wondering if the aprs protocol would allow a mobile station to record its position versus time; and then upload the data when a data connection is re-established. does aprs protocol allow that?

Check Windows Mobile GPS functions - use VisualGPSce
I have a small free tool I use on my Sprint Mogul phone called VisualGPSce that works to display satellites and my gps position, via the built-in phone gps. Some might find it useful to supplement APRSIS-CE and make sure your gps is working.

Constant DATA streaming?
2
Lynn - 1) is the APRSIS-CE application constantly maintaining a DATA STREAM connectivity to the internet, via my data plan on my phone? In other words, while I am beaconing, do I have a connection via my data plan, that never disconnects? 2) Or does APRSIS-CE make a connection,; send a beacon; and then disconnect? 3) I assume that I need to have a constant functioning of my GPS circuit in my cellphone, in order for APRSIS-CE to work. Is that correct?

Red dots
Jerome, The red dot (there should only be one of them) indicates your projected position based on the most recent beacon that APRSISCE transmitted. The red dot isn't scaled to the map, but to the surrounding circle. In the Genius Beacon settings, there's a Forecast Error that defaults to 0.1 miles (1/10 mile). That distance is considered to the be radius of the circle. The red dot will range from the center towards the edge in the direction that your last beaconed heading and speed would place you. When the red dot hits the edge, if the Min Time has elapsed, a new beacon will be issued. For instance, let's say your last beacon said you were going due East at 5 miles per hour. Right after that beacon, you increased your speed to 7 miles per hour. The red dot will start lagging to the west as you travel faster east than your last beacon would indicate. When the forecast lags by 1/10 mile, the dot will hit the left edge of the circle and a new beacon will be sent and the red dot will jump back to the center to be covered by your own icon. If you turn slightly left or right, you will see the red dot slow start moving towards the edge as your current path veers away from where an extrapolated position would put you. Again, when it has seen an accumulated error of 1/10 mile (or whatever you have configured for the Forecast Error), a new beacon will be sent. Hopefully that clarifies the mysterious red dot! Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile PS. Sorry for the delay in answering this question. I received it while on vacation and am now clearing out that "ToDo" folder in my e-mail! Couple of comments after about a month of off and on use
My phone, using the HTC Touch/Sprint unlimited plan CE6.1 Comments about when screen goes dark; does program keep running? On the Touch, the answer is YES. The screen goes dark to save battery but all applications keep running. Push the power switch and screen is back up, everything including GPS is working. I didn't need to change any settings for this on the Touch. Texting is much faster using my phone, over the Kenwood D710 or similar. Even though I don't have a real key pad on this phone, using the stylus and the on screen typing keyboard is a breeze. It is taking some time to get the local digi owners to change their settings to the internet to get full duplex with radio based APRSers but they are coming around once I show them this program. BTW, I love the phone icon. It brings interesting coments from FindU users ;-) Especially since my message is my phone number. Everyone I've shown this to is WOWed by it! My only negative comment is that + and - which I guess you asked the group about (before I tried the program) works opposite from any GPS I've owned so I have to stop and think about which way to press. + should be for zooming in for more detail. But don't change it on my account ;-) This latest version has a couple of neat additions. Keep up the good work! Thanks again,73 John K2QY
