TM-D710G No RF?

I'm just getting a TM-D710G back running with APRSIS and don't see any RF connections listed in the View:RF menu. I'm line-of-sight to the UNCAN gateway in Southern NH and have had good RF before, so I must have an incorrect configuration. Squelch is up fully CW and I see (and hear) UNCAN hits on my radio. No direct hits are recorded on APRS.FI.

An FTDI chip serial cable connects my PC and head unit. I see KDW710 OK and APRSIS OK alternating in the upper left window.

What else to check?

You must have a GPS satellite fix, or manually programmed position,?or it won't transmit.

I have my location manually programmed - it appears in the lower left.

Channel A had been dedicated to Winlink Express, using a Masters Communication DRA-50 using the TM-D710G DATA port. I'll have to check if I changed any radio settings that might be relevant.

First, I will start with the responses you see and the interpretation of them:
? ? KDW710 OK and APRSIS OK? ? ? ->? ? ? means APRSIS32 was able to open these ports
? ? ? ? ?KDW710 OK pretty much means only that the COM# port was not in use by another application.
? ?Looking at the LOG (Menu >Enables >LOGGING >Port(KDW710) should provide a lot more information

There is a lot of information missing that could help us help you (as they say):
1. When you say RF connections, do you mean you are not any any station received over RF?
? ?On the TM-D710G, APRSIS32, or neither?? I assume "see and hear UNCAN on my radio" means only APRSIS32
2. Squelch is fully CW?
? ? Don't you mean CCW? or "open" so you hear noise all the time.
? ? Don't have a Kenwood, but the "internal TNC" probably decodes with any Squelch setting.
3. FDTI chip serial cable connects PC and head set - home made, or Kenwood product?
? ? Are you sure it is connected to the headset properly??
? ? The Serial pins are 3,4, and 5 (middle row) of the 8-pin miniDIN.
? ? I didn't see the level used in the manual (RS232 or TTL), but the comment "do not connect a computer to the PC terminal of the TX/RX unit" implies TTL to me.
4. Settings on the D710.? Do they match the expected settings for APRSIS32 to communicate?
? ? What type of port is KDW710 and how did you configure it?
? ???shows "APRS Mode" and "KISS mode" options

Thanks for the help, Robert.

1. On my radio display, I can see the station popups and hear the APRS audio squawk. With the radio TX Beep on, I hear it beep periodically. Looking at APRS.FI again, I see "Stations which heard N4SRN directly" has a list of stations that are indeed hearing me today.

2. My radio squelch knob is fully CW. Elsewhere I had read that if CCW, the radio would always see the channel by busy and not transmit. Dunno...

3. The cable is a commercial clone of a Kenwood PG-5G. I also tried a 2nd serial cable I use in my moble rig (RTSystems USB-K5G) both connected on COM3 9600 none, 8 1. My radio's Ext. Data Speed is 1200 bps (919) corresponding to TNC APRS12 and both COM Port Baud Rate (929) and PC Port Baud Rate (920) are 9600 bps. Com Port (604) is ON.

4. Configure>Port>KDW710 is configured as KDW710(KDW700(KISS)) with Checked:? RF to IS, Enabled, Messages, Xmit Enabled (others unchecked)

So, what's happening is my APRSIS32 installation is working via internet APRSIS alone but can't see any directly received RF from my radio.?

If your radio is showing packets and beeping on transmit, the internal TNC must be in APRS12 mode.

If your port type is KWD700(KISS), then APRSIS32 expects the radio's TNC to be in Packet12 mode before the port is enabled or APRSIS32 starts running.

If you look at the Port({YourPortName}) and enable it, you likely see complaints about "Missing C0" which means APRSIS32 isn't getting KISS packets from the radio.

Try disabling all of the RF ports you currently have configured, and create a new one of type KWD710(APRS) and see how that works out.?? With that port type, you can keep your D710's TNC in APRS mode and APRSIS32 will attempt to work around it when it needs to transmit.

Thanks Lynn, that did it fine.

I'll save this note, but a Save Config option might be a nice future feature.

Can you describe a "Save Config" option?? APRSIS32 automatically saves the configuration every time you change it.?? And if you want to secure a copy of it, simply close the client and copy the APRSIS32.XML file to another location.?? As a matter of fact, that's how you run multiple concurrent copies of APRSIS32, simply put the .EXE into different directories, and they'll each have their own local configuration.

That would do what I need, thanks. I suspect some apps just have a menu item "Backup Config" that does just that. But I'll just keep a copy of APRSIS32.XML where I can find it.

+1 to Bret's suggestion.? Right now there is THE configuration, instead of A configuration.? It's tied to the start-up directory, which is an unusual means for managing configurations.? The save-on-exit model makes the management of configuration files somewhat tedious and error-prone.?

If I may, I think adding menu items for Configure -> Save and especially Configure -> Save-as would be useful when developing different configurations, or to create scenarios for special-case use.? You'd need a corresponding Configure -> Open, too.?

To go along with the new commands, I expect you would want a command-line option to choose which configuration file to use, if it's different than the default.? Opening the "last used" might be useful.

APRSIS32 also automatically keeps a "safe" copy of the config file whenever it successfully loads one.?? That way if anyone edits the file or the XML otherwise becomes unparseable, it will automatically load the "safe" copy and alert the user that it has done so.?? This was done in self-defense against users that use things like Word to edit the XML configuration resulting in a no-longer-pure-text file.

I know it's cheating but I backup the entire folder.? That way I have backups and alternative setups that I can launch from windows explorer/file manager.
