Can you receive and store messages with aprs?

Hank Tyler

Suppose you are using an RF only setup and send a message to someone who is not on the air at the moment. Does aprs have the capability to send a message to that person and have it stored somehow for later retrieval by that person?
?
Thanks!

I do not know of a store-and-forward feature for APRS at this time.?? I seem to recall that someone was working on a mailbox-like feature, but I'm not sure now where I read about it or how it was going to work.

Hi Hank,

Yes it does if you use UI-View and an add-on called UI-Store & Forward. There is also a UI-BBS which works as a Bulletin Board.
You can find this information here:

I wish other developers (hint to Lynn Deffebaugh) would add this facility to their APRS Software because unfortunately G4IDE, author of UI-View is SK. Still there are many people still interested in UI-View and all it's add-ons and they keep UI-View alive.

Check out APRS.wiki you can opt in to use it with both sms and mail. Mail is store and forward I know that. Not sure if SMS acts the same way.

Hi John,

Could you elaborate about the MAIL store and forward please?
How is it done? Is it two way or one way only? Also is there an Internet server that does this?
Could you give us an example? I would love to know how it is done!

It’s the MAIL server on APRS. Yes it is two way. Just use Mail in the to section and put @N4EJM(for example) then the message. It’ll tell you if the message was sent to the designated call sign. You can use the SSID if you want but not sure it’s necessary.

You can check messages pending by going to MAIL in the to section and type APRSM, then when it connects will let you know if you have any pending. Here is a screenshot:

Sorry,

I have not received anything so far. I am QRV as SV1UY-1 in Athens every day on VHF 144800 kHz from 9am to midnight LOCAL time or 06.00z - 23.00z . We have a couple of IGATES here and I have a good link with them.

Could you try again please, only to SV1UY-1 as I am not in the UK except in July.

Thanks for testing Erwin.
