Collections Database Software Opinion
Hello All, With the new fiscal year coming up, we are looking at all aspects of where our money is going. A large part of the Collections budget is designated for the Collections Database Software. We are currently using EmbARK by Gallery Systems, but we are curious as to what other softwares people are using? Particularly in the American Academic Museum settings. And, if you wouldn't mind sharing, what is your opinion of your software? Do you like it? Are you also looking to change? What software systems/companies are you looking into? Thank you in advance for your help with this! I'm trying to get a good read on the situation to then present forward. Best Wishes, Brittany -- Brittany Hild (she/her) Collections Database Coordinator University of Notre Dame 100 Raclin Murphy Museum of Art Notre Dame, IN 46556-0020 bhild@... As an initial step towards reconciliation and out of a desire for a brighter and more equitable future, the Museum is committed to amplifying Indigenous voices and building conversation and collaboration through the hosting and support of Indigenous artists, art forms, and communities.

Accessible Reading Level for Curatorial Content?
Dear Colleagues, I¡¯m reaching out for your insights and any resources you¡¯d be willing to share. Have you developed any guidelines or rubrics that help determine and shape appropriate reading levels for curatorial content? We¡¯re working to ensure that all public-facing text, from web pages to interpretive wall labels, is truly accessible to the wide range of audiences we serve and written to the appropriate reading level. We've always said our Museum aims for a high school reading level, but my initial online research into literacy stats suggests most Americans today read below a 6th-grade level. What grade level does your museum aim for? One of our key challenges is balancing this goal with the preferences of guest curators, who often favor more complex or academic language. Our aim is to make interpretive materials inclusive, engaging, and readable¡ªwithout oversimplifying or diluting their meaning. We'd love to link our policy to industry best practices. And while we¡¯ve found AAM¡¯s Accessible Communications Guidelines helpful for general messaging, we haven't come across similar guidance specific to curatorial or interpretive content: https://www.aam-us.org/2021/07/01/accessible-communications-guidelines/. Are there any industry best practices out there? We¡¯ve also been exploring tools like the Hemingway App (https://hemingwayapp.com/) to evaluate reading level. Has anyone used this¡ªor other readability tools¡ªin a museum context? Any frameworks, examples, or editing strategies that have helped make your curatorial interpretive content more accessible would be greatly appreciated. And I'm happy to share my findings if folks share resources with me. Thanks in advance! Best Regards, Anna Anna Conlan Neil C. Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company!
We're thrilled to announce that the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company will perform at the 2025 AAMG Conference in Albuquerque, NM during our Keynote Celebration! ? Join us for an unforgettable evening of movement, storytelling, and celebration. Photograph by Stefan Jennings Batista. Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC) will perform the world premiere of Sudden Snow ¨C a dance inspired by the work of abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011). Known world-wide for her iconic soak-stain technique, Frankenthaler helped shape an entire art movement. Frankenthaler was influenced by other great abstract painters including Hans Hofmann and Jackson Pollock, as well as by Asian Buddhist calligraphy practices. It is this intersection of abstraction and Eastern aesthetics that inspires Burgess¡¯s choreography for this new work. Sudden Snow, a half hour dance for eight dancers from the Company will include a visual montage of Frankenthaler¡¯s Sudden Snow (1987) for which the dance piece is named, original fabric designs by Taos Pueblo designer - Patricia Michaels with costumes by Icelandic designer Sigrid Johannesd?ttir, and a musical score consisting of Romantic Era compositions. The compositions are works that Frankenthaler listened to while painting in her New York studio. The musical score will be played live by DTSBDC collaborative pianist Dana Nichole Scott and, a cellist and violinist. This work is commissioned by the UNM Art Museum. Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company is Washington, DC's premier modern dance company specializing in the works for both museums and stage. The Washington Post Pulitzer Prize winning dance critic Sarah Kaufman says of the company, "Not only a Washington prize, but a national dance treasure."

Is my distaste for rails reasonable?
8
I loath hanging from rails. It seems obviously asking for bad things to happen, yet this is the preferred method all over campus. Part of my role is hanging art around campus in offices and hallways. I prefer hanging with security hardware, but Facilities get's upset if I put holes in the walls. We have grooves everywhere on campus to hang from, usually with wire or monofil. Is it totally irrational that I have deep anxiety about hanging from these rails? Every time I think about it I start imagining some student sitting underneath a painting haphazardly and knocking it off the wall onto themselves. -- Rachel Rushing (she/her) Director, Taber Art Gallery Holyoke Community College www.hcc.edu/taber
