Dusting the frames of unglazed works
#collections
#seekingadvice
Hello all,
?
I am an intern (soon to be full hire) at a small art museum and have noticed that many of our frames have significant buildups of dust on top. I have an appropriate brush and am not too concerned about dusting our glazed works, but I am unsure about unglazed. Is there anything I can do to minimize the dust kicked up while cleaning and prevent it from settling on the surfaces of works? Any advice is much appreciated.
?
Thanks,

Hi, Jake,
I would suggest dusting with a vacuum nearby, held in such a way to scoop up the dust as you brush it off of the frames. If you place the framed works flat on a table, face up, you should be able to hold the vacuum right next to the frame as you dust and catch
most of it.
You might want to ask this on the PACCIN listserve, or check and see if they have an article about it.

Also make sure that you are protecting your airways and your eyes, too, during the vacuuming/brushing process. So wearing a well-fitting N95 mask and fully enclosed googles.

Meg
