¡°A design for living¡± why is it in quotes? (A.A. p28)

¡°a design for living¡± is in quotation marks on page 28 of chapter 2 of the big book, I¡¯m wondering why? Is it in reference to another text or quote from the author (Bill W.)? Looking for facts over opinions, but open to hearing what others have to share. Thanks, Jimi C Chicagoland

Bill W on how to read the Big Book (?)
#billandbob
Somewhere, some time in the old yahoo group, I read a post that related Bill W said the best way for a newcomer to read the "Big Book" was to start with the personal stories. At the point the reader encountered a story they related to, then the should read the first 164 pages. The idea was it was important to be able to "identify in." For the life of me, I cannot retrieve this post, nor find any references to it. Does anyone have any information on this? Happy to know whether it was true or just another bit of lore that doesn't have supporting evidence. Thanks in advance!

[Schaberg] Posting??
Thom¡ For the life of me, I can¡¯t figure out how to post to the AAHistoryLovers board. [Moderator comment: Actually, Bill, you did just fine. What you did worked and it went into the moderator queue. I am now going to approve it. Happy New Year! -Thom] Here¡¯s what I would like to add: In the ¡°Spiritual Appendix¡±, Bill¡¯s mention of ¡°the educational variety¡± (quoting Wm James) has always been a problem. No one has ever found that phrase in Wm James¡¯ writings. However, today while delving into The Varieties of Religious Experience, I noticed the following footnote on p. 508 (first edition copy) which says something LIKE that: ¡°Remember that for some men it arrives suddenly, for others gradually, whilst other again practically enjoy it all their life.¡± Best, Bill Bill Schaberg Athena Rare Books, ABAA 424 Riverside Drive Fairfield, CT 06824 203-254-2727 www.athenararebooks.com Know yourself Nothing to excess Certainty brings insanity Carved above the entry to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi

Silkworth, M.D., and the Origin and Development of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) Cite as: McPeake,J.D. (2012) William D. Silkworth, M.D., and the origin and development of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). Dublin NH, 03444: The Dublin Group, Inc., www.dubgrp.com Abstract William Duncan Silkworth, M.D. (WDS) had an important impact on the origin and development of A.A. This paper examines his contribution through a study of his biography (2002), his extant published and non-published papers in that biography, two additional papers not included in the biography, and an examination of other published information about the history of A.A. WDS developed the ¡°illness¡± concept of alcoholism, he performed several remarkable clinical interventions without which A.A. would probably never have formed, provided most significantly, medical legitimacy for A.A. when few other medical professionals would. Through his published works he introduced the developing A.A. movement to the wider medical community focusing on treatment models, relapse, and co-morbidity, topics of active discussion in the addiction treatment literature to this day.

First AA bulletins
Dear AA friends, Bill Wilson had a spiritual experience that provided a release from his alcoholic obsession during the second week of December of 1934. He immediately thought about helping other alcoholics (p. 14). By the following June, he helped start our fellowship and only five years later published our first bulletin (attached). please note the amazing new members just five years later! I believe you will enjoy reading these first early bulletins. Much early AA history can be deduced from these. In happy archive service, Bob S -- Bob S

RICHMOND WALKER & THE TWENTY-FOUR HOUR BOOK
4
I found several posts in the AAHistoryLovers archives about Richmond Walker and the 24-Hours a Day book, by Glenn C. I simply assembled the posts and cleaned up the text to make it more readable as a text file.... Removed a bunch of line breaks mostly. The more I learn about Richmond Walker and the 24 Hour book, the more I appreciate it. I especially enjoy getting in the middle of a "It's not conference-approved literature!!" discussion every now and then :o) If you like the 24-Hour book, I believe you will enjoy this presentation by Glenn. Thom, I believe you were instrumental in assembling all the archive PDF's.... So valuable. Thank you.

Ebby T. crashes into kitchen
Dear AA history buffs, I have often thought the story of Ebby Thacher crashing his Packard into the kitchen of a residence and asking for a cup of coffee to be an urban legend, But indeed it was published in the local Vermont newspaper, The Bennington Banner, on January 12, 1925. To read this article, plus more about Ebby, please go to this link to page 17A. https://drive.google.com/file/d/18m2YDIzq5KlY5F_vvGZdYAs1JKqznfdf/view?usp=share_link Bob S Robert Stonebraker 212 SW 18th Street Richmond, IN 47374bby Thacher's Packard Cra (765) 935-0130 -- Bob S
