AA History Lovers Messages

Jim Myers

Edited

Hi Group!

The AA History Lovers messages from 2013 to 2016 Glenn saved is up on the web temporarily. The Text file and the MS Word file was jumbled up quite a bit. I was able to clean it up some to make it more legible with clickable links in the PDF and MS Word files, including making the text more uniform throughout,?though I suspect many of the links are out of date. I wasn't able to create html files like the ones from 2002 to 2012 but they are up temporarily as well. I wasn't able to create Microsoft Data Base (mdb) files though I do have Microsoft Access. I just couldn't figure out how to do it.

If anyone here cares to jump in and help me edit the Text and MS Word files, that would be great. I started working on the 2013 text file to make it like Glenn did, but it's quite apparent that there is quite a lot of work to be done; more than I can handle alone.

At any rate, here they are on the newly updated AA History Lovers messages page. You can save the files to your computer if you'd like to help out a bit or to just have them on hand. I do hope you find them useful.

[Moderator comment: THANK YOU for posting these. I have been working on them as well for awhile trying to get them into a usable format. Rather than possibly duplicate effort needlessly, perhaps we should or could work together on this? Let's talk about it? THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE as we try to bring the whole archive (or as much as possible) back online. We are also already storing up to 2012 here in the file bases already and once the rest are processed (and you are right, quite a job!) they will also be stored here, too, of course. --Thom]

I am willing to help, but also don't want to step on someone else's work.?
Assign sections??
Publish a consist editing standard?

Thanks, I miss being able to search the old messages...
In joy, In service, in love.
Doris R

[Moderator comment: Thank you! Please note a PDF that has all the messages up until 2012 that is fully searchable is already in our file section. We just need to get 2013 to 2016 added. -Thom]

Hi Thom!

I believe Doris has a good point.

As you know, I am rebuilding the silkworth site and will be jumping back and forth working on the silkworth site and the AAHL's messages.

I'd be happy to work a long with any one who cares to do the edits. Would you care to take the lead on this?

One more thing Thom... I did a test search to see how the search results showed up. The result was, that where ever there is a line break in a complete sentence or paragraph, for instance: if you did a search such as,

When was the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous

and there was a line break such as this:

When was the founding of
Alcoholics Anonymous

Then it will not show up in the search results. Not sure if you knew this was the case.

Yes, unfortunately I did know that and we all are well aware this is a huge undertaking. I'm very happy.

I'm indeed willing to take the lead on this because it has to get done. I think the first thing we all need to discuss and we can discuss it right here is workflow. But before we even do that we should discuss technique. Does anyone have any idea what the best way to attack this problem might be? I'd like to hear some ideas. There's got to be a better way than manual editing there just has to be. Even though I've been putting in a ton of time on it whenever I get the time it's just so monumental of a task.

But I could not agree more, this project going to take a group effort. Maybe I should open up a chat for this so we can have a real discussion there? What do you think? Notice if you look we have chat rooms we can create that are static so we can really really go at it without blowing up this forum section.

Thoughts??

We could absolutely use your help. Please see my reply to Jim also. Let's put our heads together and figure out the best way to approach this and make it a team effort so that we can get it done. It's a Monumental task and effort but I think together we can do this!

I've been working on a way to get the last messages out of AAHL 2 but Yahoo has gutted it so bad that is proving a challenge. But I'm here to tell you that I'm going to get them.

And by the way your work on the silkworth site is nothing short of outstanding.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for all you've done over the years. So grateful you have made progress on the NEW Silkworth site!? (??) Also happy to see a "donate" link! We all know there are costs involved with maintaining and building the site, so I hope everyone will notice the "donate" link as they mine that site for useful information!?

Some may not know the history of the two silkworth sites, so you, or Thom (I assume he knows) may need to explain that a little bit so folks are supporting the new silkworth.info site and not the old silkworth site.

Thanks again Jim!

Ultimately, what you want is a database file in which search strings are parsed into individual words (and single quote are properly quoted in searches).? Then you pull back the data based upon largest number to lowest number of hits (a little more complex than it sounds).

We will not even get into the complex algorithms google uses in their cubes and the fact that they have separate but similar cubes to perform searches against (really a rather remarkable search engine).

I may be able to find some time to help, but I need to know constraints of environment to search in and limitations of databases available to store the data.

Gutenberg site has figured a lot of this out. They post out of print books by scanning and then editing. First they gave 1 person a doc file to edit and each one would get posted. Now they have a way to automate it so you can just do bits online.
Just a thought.
If either Silkworth or AAHL wants to send me a "chunk" I'm happy to edit .? We need standards. Do we take out all header except who sent it and the date? How are threads organized? Etc.

Thanks for all you do.
Doris

First, let me say, thank you for your kind words!

I will be brief, but I will give those here who may not know, a very brief history of my original site, silkworth.net, how it came into play, why and its current status. I should also mention at this time, that I'm no computer expert. I'm not a writer or author of anything other than my website.
?
I was first introduced to the Fellowship on October 31st, 1981. Anything having to do with Alcoholics Anonymous history was not even on my mind for years. It wasn't until early 1999 that I was First introduced to computers. I didn't even like them. They maid me feel stupid. I didn't even know how to turn One on.
?
My mother was taking a trip to our homeland, St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada to visit family. She was already using computers but I was still clueless. At that time, she liked to use a program on the Internet called, "ICQ", which, at that time, I believe was the largest communication network in the World via computers. All you needed in order to use it, was an Internet connection. She showed me how to use ICQ so that we could communicate with one-another without having to pay for long distance phone charges while she was in Newfoundland, Canada and I in South Carolina, USA at the time.
?
After learning how to use ICQ, I quickly became fascinated with computers. It was quite apparent that I had a pretty big part of the World at my fingertips. I met folks from around the World, became friends with some, but I grew very tired of the ICQ program quickly because of its limitations. I just new that there was much more I could do with computers, so, I set out to discover, if you will. I started exploring the Internet, searching for anything that came to mind.?
?
One topic that has always fascinated me from childhood, was the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence. Some of the pages that came back in the search results could do some pretty neat things back then. Of course, back then, everything was pretty neat as far as computers were concerned. I had it in my head that I was going to learn how to do some of those neat tricks. I quickly learned how to view the source code underneath those web pages that made the web pages look the way they did. So, I set out to teach myself how to create my First website (about UFO's, of course). I quickly found a place online that had an editor to create/build websites. It was Netscape, though it was short lived. I was soon introduced to the editor, Dreamweaver, by a truck driver that worked for the same company as I, Eckerd Drug.
?
Out of curiosity, I started searching for anything having to do with Alcoholics Anonymous. One day, towards the end of 1999, one page that came back in the search results was about Alcoholics Anonymous history. That site was created by Mitchell K. who was sponsored by Clarence Snyder (to this day, I still have a copy of on the silkworth site today). It wasn't a big website, but it got my undivided attention, 100%. I became fascinated with Alcoholics Anonymous history right a way. It was Mitchell's website that inspired me to start searching for anything having to do with Alcoholics Anonymous and its history, which, of course, led me to start creating my own AA history website.
?
At that time, I began searching for anything having to do with AA history and learned how to save all the information returned from the search results - proof reading everything - learning how to do things such as creating a drop down menu. I searched high and low and had accumulated a lot of information about Alcoholics Anonymous. I knew that moving forward meant the site had to be strictly about Alcoholics Anonymous and its history. It couldn't be about any other Twelve Step Program, other than a little information about Al-anon. Thus began my journey... I remember my daughter (about 11 or 12), in my First Five years working on my site. Cheyenne would bring her friends over and she would introduce me to her friends and then my daughter would point to my computer and say, "That's my fathers wife."
?
What was very important to me back then and still so now, was to gather as much information about Alcoholics Anonymous and its history, bringing it all to One place on the Internet for folks to find. It was also important for me to present the information in a way that it could somehow, be helpful to the visitors to the site - especially to anyone new to Alcoholics Anonymous. I remember early on, I thought, if the site helped One person, then the site did what it was supposed to do. I'll be 64 on New years Eve and One of the emails that stands out in my mind right now, was an elderly man contacted me and simply stated, "Thank you for saving my sons life!"
?
I did a lot of experimenting early on; trying new things and such; continued to learn new things a long the way. The website originally launched on December 12th, 2000 on the World Wide Web to the general public under the domain name: silkworth.net. I was once asked, why did I choose the domain name, silkworth, in the domain name? My answer: "Was it not Dr. Silkworth who better helped us understand our disease of alcoholism?" It became clear to me that the website needed to be provided for free, as it should be; that the site could not be used for monetary gain. In my eyes, Alcoholics Anonymous is not for sale! And this is where my original website, silkworth.net comes into play.?
?
In early 2017, after working on the site for approximately 16 years, I gave up the site to a guy just outside of London. He flew here, came to my home, talked a while, we signed a contract - he left the same day. He wasn't to use the site for monetary gain. Well, that is exactly what he has done with the site. He later told me that he was using the site for monetary gain. There has been no contact with him for over 2 years. I was told once that he doesn't reply to visitor emails. And this is where my site, silkworth.info comes into play.
?
After being asked by many, I decided to rebuild my website under the new domain name, ; no clutter, no ads, nothing for sale - only the information that the visitor is looking for - black on white for the most part - nothing fancy.? It was suggested that I use the name, Silkworth, in my new domain name address in order to compete with my original website address in the Search Engines. So, there you have it.
?
Silkworth.info and all the information it provides, will always be free to the visitors in hopes that it continues to be helpful in some way or another. As time passes, some directories will have to be password protected, requiring membership due to the contents sensitivity/copyrights. Anyone can request membership.

Hi group!

I'm all in for Jim B's idea of having a data base file that is searchable. You make it sound pretty easy Jim. But you lost me with the algorithms part. I have no idea how to create such a data base file.

I also think it would be nice to have Text, MS Word and PDF files that are searchable as well. These type of files, when their programs are updated, I'm sure the files will be updated over time as folks use them so they won't be lost.

I found an online tool that corrects the line breaks in a text file with a single click of the mouse. However, it will still require editing though speeding up the edits a bit. Here is the link to take care of the line breaks for text files:?

The line breaks can also be removed in a MS Word doc as well. Here is the link for a tutorial on removing breaks of any kind in a MS Word doc:?

If any of you would like to take a look at these Two links and you become interested in editing a text or MS Word document, that would be great, if that's OK with you Thom.

As for the PDF files - those can be done in a matter of minutes. The downfall is, the MS Word document needs to be done First in order to preserve the links for the PDF file that will be created from the MS Word document.

If it's ok with you Thom, I'm just throwing this out there as a means of tackling the task at hand.

You (anyone) can get back to me at jim.myers56@...?if you'd like to take a crack at editing one of the text or word docs. I will attach a file to a reply email and keep tabs on who has what documents. This too, is just a thought. Spreading out the work among a group will speed up the process. One thinking of how much work that needs to be done over all can be very overwhelming. If you only have One document to edit, it won't be as overwhelming to get the job done. Getting started on the One document you may have is the hard part. Once you get started and find your niche, it suddenly becomes very easy.?

Just an idea.

Ever yours,
Jim

PS - I want to thank you all for your continued support of silkworth.info over the years.
