Summer homes of Ebby's family

Thom,

?

This message may be more to the point than the one I sent yesterday.

?

This is the season when Ebby Thacher shot at pigeons on his roof ?during late summer 1934—an important component of our AA beginnings.? So, I thought it appropriate to send this ?message today. ?The attachment pictures the different Thacher “summer residences” in Manchester, Vermont from the late 1800s.? These were rented till the Thacher family ?finally purchased the house at 110 Taconic Road in 1923. This residence is across the street from where President Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, lived till 1903 while building ?a memorial to his father: HILDENE. ??(Ebby’s father, George Thacher, ?played golf with Robert and then-President Taft during the early 1900s).

?

Some writings specify that the Thachers once resided in the Robert Todd Lincoln house at 125 Taconic Road.? Research reveals that George H. Thacher purchased the residence at 110 Taconic Road in 1923, as the attachment will disclose. Interestingly, the north portion of? the 1923 Thacher property connected to that of Lois Wilson’s parents estate (the Burnhams) .? This drawing is from: “ROGERS BURNHAM, the original man behind Bill W.” by Leslie B. Cole.? Page 137. ?

?

Diagram, engineering drawing

Description automatically generated??

The vertical street is Main Street and the horizonal is Taconic Road.? ?The property at the upper right was the “Hoyt House,” once rented by the Thachers. ??

?

On your next visit to the WILSON HOUSE be sure to visit Manchester. The Wilson House used to present a guided tour. ?Most of these structures are still there.

?

As ?you may surmise, this was a pretty prestigious neighborhood—probably not a good place to get drunk and shoot at pigeons on your roof as Ebby did in 1934. ?This set off? a chain of events that became a vital link in our AA history. To keep it short, here is a sequence of events:

?

Late summer, 1934: Ebby makes court appearance, for said shooting. The judge was Judge Graves whose ?son, Cebra Graves, was an Oxford Group member who had been trying to help Ebby quit drinking.? Ebby was released into the mentorship of respect ted millionaire Rowland Hazard. ?

?

Fall, 1934: On Rowland’s advice, Ebby become a resident of Calvary Mission in lower Manhattan where he learned that his old schoolmate, Bill Wilson, was facing serious drinking problems.

?

November 1934: ?Ebby informs Bill that he ?had solved his drinking problem through the practice of spiritual principles.

?

December 11, 1934: Bill has his last drink and remains sober with the Oxford Group in NY.

?

May 12, 1935: ?Bill carries his sober message to Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio.

?

June 1935: Dr. Bob imbibes his last drink. This marked the starting point of our AA fellowship.?

?

September 29, 2020:? Today, we can all thank Ebby for getting drunk and shooting at those pigeons!? ?Hurrah for Ebby!!

?

God works in mysterious ways!

Thacher family summer homes

Ebby Thacher’s family summer homes in Manchester, Vermont:

This is the season when Ebby Thacher shot at pigeons on his roof ?during late summer 1934—an important component of our AA beginnings.? So, I thought it appropriate to send these attachments . The attachment on the left pictures the different Thacher “summer residences” in Manchester Vermont from the late 1800s.? The Lincoln house at 125 Taconic Road is sometimes specified where the Thacher family resided. Probably not!? Research reveals that George H. Re: Bill's Resolution 1955 GSC

You found it and sent it to me but for the benefit of everyone, here it is :)

Bill's Resolution 1955 GSC

Hi all,

Does anyone have the complete text from Bill's resolution making the conference permanent at the 1955 GSC that includes this line: "as of this date July 3, 1955, the guardian of the Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous, the perpetuator of the World Services of our Society, the voice of the group conscience of our entire Fellowship and the sole successors to its co-founders, Dr Bob and Bill.”?

Thanks,
-Mike

Description:
The COMPLETE Eldrick B. Davis articles that appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper in 1939. This set off a huge chain reaction in Cleveland that really helped AA in Cleveland grow quickly! Eldrick was hired to infiltrate this "weird organization that was claiming to fix drunks" and expose it as a sham. He was so blown away by what he actually found that he outed himself and wrote this series of AMAZING articles. These are right up there with the "Jack Alexander" article BUT it wasn't distributed nationally like the JA article was (Saturday Evening Post) and that was the only problem with these and most likely why they are not even more well known and lauded. As important as these are, back in the day they only made it out of Cleveland if someone in the nearby cities like Akron or Youngstown happened to have a subscription to the Plain Dealer. But even still., these articles paint a very detailed picture of what "AA" was like in 1939 in the Cleveland area. The two bonus articles that Eldrick wrote AFTER the series went to print are also included here. Enjoy! Best, Thom R. (Your AAHL@Facebook and [email protected] Moderator)

[Edited Message Follows]
[Reason: Responding to interest in creating a Wiki article on his life.]

As Bill Schaberg points out Hank does not have a Wikipedia entry.

Questions for the Group:
  1. Have there been attempts to make one by anyone in this group?
  2. If so, what challenges were encountered?
  3. Is there interest within the group in collaborating on creating one?

Potential Acceptable References
  1. It seems that Bill Schaberg's book provides us with plenty of reliably researched material in a published work that can be cited and footnoted.?
  2. A quick search of the web shows that there are a number of webpages that are likely to be acceptable.
  3. The Big Book itself could also be referenced for some statements,
The Wikipedia Process
  1. Is complicated, fair, detailed, sometimes seemingly arbitrary and open to anyone who wishes to engage in it.
  2. Requires patience, engagement with the Wikipedia community's policy and procedures.
  3. Is made easier by Wikipedia templates and help pages.
  4. Is more difficult for new entries than for minor edits.
  5. Often requires multiple attempts and revisions.
  6. Like most things it is learned by action rather than by speculation.

Perhaps the group conscience has decided not to engage in such out of group projects. I do believe that adding an entry on the Hank would be of service to "others" [ref Step 12 prior to last minute editing], to sober members of Alcoholics Anonymous and to members of the greater 12 Step community who follow the map laid out in the Big Book to recover.

What do you think? Does it interest you?

9/23/2020 Edit: There seems to be interest in compiling a Wiki entry of some sort on Hank. Thom R has opened up the Google wiki function. I have started an entry in the AAHistoryLovers Wiki..

The History Lover's Wiki could serve as a central place to compile facts about his life.
I believe any member can add to that AAHistoryLovers Wiki article.

I propose we begin adding facts that you think ought to be included in any article along with citations. There's no need to put together a narrative or compose the actual article at this point imo. At this moment I have added his birth and death dates along with the website where I have found

Keep in mind that if the article is submitted to Wikipedia itself, the volunteer gatekeepers who may or may not have any interest in AA will have to be convinced that he is a notable person worthy of inclusion. It would be helpful to think about why he is notable.(and not just within AA or the 12 Step community at large)? and to include citations that back that up. We may have to walk them down the path somewhat ie: Such and such states that the AA Big Book is one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Schaberg states without Hank there would be no AA Big Book. He influenced the content of the book in such and such ways and according to such and such a source these ideas (for example God as I understand him) were critical to the success of the AA program of recovery.

About citations:

  1. The citations do not need to be perfect but they ought to allow someone else to find the source and create a proper reference when the time comes.
  2. Wikipedia editors accept citations from many but not all websites. I know from experience that they do not like IMDb as a source for example.
  3. An article having citations only from one source is generally frowned upon. We know that Bill Schaberg's research is reliable but if he documents the source of his information it may be better to cite that source rather than the book though certainly Writing the Big Book should be an acceptable reference.

Re: Henry G. Parkhurst Wikipedia entry

According to P-47 Understanding Anonymity it states:?A.A. members generally think it unwise to break the anonymity of the member even after his or her death, but in each situation, the final decision must rest with the family. A.A. members, though, are in agreement that the anonymity of still living A.A. members should be respected in obituaries or in any type of printed remembrance or death notice. Looks like if Hank's family approves of the wiki page it would satisfy tradition 11.

OH and... we have a Wiki HERE on groups.io as well. In fact, I just turned it on. Check it out! Maybe we can do wiki pages here and then "push" them to wherever (or leave them here and build a nice large Wiki together)?

I have turned on "Members can edit" so you all should be able to play with it now.

I also, while at it, turned on "members can create and edit polls". If anyone ever wants to have some fun with that feature then have at it! :)

Best,?

Thom

Re: Henry G. Parkhurst Wikipedia entry

True, that.??

Henry ("Hank") G. P. (A.A.)?

or something would most certainly be fine though.

Best,

To create a Wikipedia page with Hank’s full name would be shattering Tradition 11. ?Traditions are not negated if the person is dead. ?
I know, I know....there are numerous pioneers with a Wikipedia page already, and we enjoying learning our history and want nothing more than to provide opportunity for others to enjoy our history as well. ?In respect to archives, it’s a Tradition that has been a proverbial thorn in my side too.
??I am currently involved in creating a timeline for our Area, and most of the original content I’ve dug up cannot be added to the timeline due to this very tradition. ?

Re: Richard Peabody's death certificate?

Thank you again for your work into finding this.?

Re: Richard Peabody's death certificate?

Yes, but why list "acute alcoholism?" I'd love to have a definitive answer if he relapsed after writing his Common Sense book. The Jesus is the only Higher Power Gang in AA?(Richard K. and his crew for example) love to point out Peabody died from booze, therefore you need Jesus. The There is no God Gang in AA?(AgnosticAA and crew for example) love to point out Peabody and his patients used a psychological approach only and stayed sober as Peabody may not have died from booze. Guess we'll never know. I contacted and spoke with the author of "Black Sun" as there was quite a bit about Peabody in that book because he was married for a time to C. Crosby. He could not give any further illumination.
