Re: AA History Lovers Messages

Yes, unfortunately I did know that and we all are well aware this is a huge undertaking. I'm very happy.

I'm indeed willing to take the lead on this because it has to get done. I think the first thing we all need to discuss and we can discuss it right here is workflow. But before we even do that we should discuss technique. Does anyone have any idea what the best way to attack this problem might be? I'd like to hear some ideas. There's got to be a better way than manual editing there just has to be. Even though I've been putting in a ton of time on it whenever I get the time it's just so monumental of a task.

But I could not agree more, this project going to take a group effort. Maybe I should open up a chat for this so we can have a real discussion there? What do you think? Notice if you look we have chat rooms we can create that are static so we can really really go at it without blowing up this forum section.

Thoughts??

One more thing Thom... I did a test search to see how the search results showed up. The result was, that where ever there is a line break in a complete sentence or paragraph, for instance: if you did a search such as,

When was the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous

and there was a line break such as this:

When was the founding of
Alcoholics Anonymous

Then it will not show up in the search results. Not sure if you knew this was the case.

Hi Thom!

I believe Doris has a good point.

As you know, I am rebuilding the silkworth site and will be jumping back and forth working on the silkworth site and the AAHL's messages.

I'd be happy to work a long with any one who cares to do the edits. Would you care to take the lead on this?

Re: AA History Lovers Messages

I am willing to help, but also don't want to step on someone else's work.?
Assign sections??
Publish a consist editing standard?

Thanks, I miss being able to search the old messages...
In joy, In service, in love.

[Moderator comment: Thank you! Please note a PDF that has all the messages up until 2012 that is fully searchable is already in our file section. We just need to get 2013 to 2016 added. -Thom]

AA History Lovers Messages

Edited

Hi Group!

The AA History Lovers messages from 2013 to 2016 Glenn saved is up on the web temporarily. The Text file and the MS Word file was jumbled up quite a bit. I was able to clean it up some to make it more legible with clickable links in the PDF and MS Word files, including making the text more uniform throughout,?though I suspect many of the links are out of date. I wasn't able to create html files like the ones from 2002 to 2012 but they are up temporarily as well. I wasn't able to create Microsoft Data Base (mdb) files though I do have Microsoft Access. I just couldn't figure out how to do it.

If anyone here cares to jump in and help me edit the Text and MS Word files, that would be great. I started working on the 2013 text file to make it like Glenn did, but it's quite apparent that there is quite a lot of work to be done; more than I can handle alone.

At any rate, here they are on the newly updated AA History Lovers messages page. You can save the files to your computer if you'd like to help out a bit or to just have them on hand. I do hope you find them useful.

https://silkworth.info/aahistorylovers/aa_history_lovers_messages.html

Ever yours,
Jim

[Moderator comment: THANK YOU for posting these. I have been working on them as well for awhile trying to get them into a usable format. Rather than possibly duplicate effort needlessly, perhaps we should or could work together on this? Let's talk about it? THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE as we try to bring the whole archive (or as much as possible) back online. We are also already storing up to 2012 here in the file bases already and once the rest are processed (and you are right, quite a job!) they will also be stored here, too, of course. --Thom]

Spiritual Guidance from the Oxford Group

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

While Bill Wilson resided at the home of Dr. Bob and Anne Smith¡¯s home during the summer of 1935, Spiritual guidance was practiced. In the book, ?NOT GOD, ?by Ernie Kurtz, p. 40¡± : ¡°Every morning, Anne, who for years begun each day with the practice of ¡®quiet time¡¯ seeking guidance, . . .¡± ??¡°Morning Guidance¡± was doubtless derived from her affiliation with the Akron Oxford group. (Please note the Graphic below).? ?

?

An interesting note: When Bill wrote the Big Book manuscript, three years later, morning ¡°quiet time¡± meditation was mentioned on manuscript page 43, fourth ?paragraph: ¡°When we awake tomorrow morning, we look over the day before, were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? Etc. However, This was changed to end up in our actual Big Book as: ¡°When we retire at night, we constructively review our day.? Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid?¡± Etc. ?

?

Uh oh! Why was this ¡°quiet time¡± function changed from ¡®morning¡¯ to ¡®night?¡¯ Please notice the large penciled lettering: ¡°OXFORD GROUP¡± just above it.? Some historians believe the reason for this change was due to the desire of editors to refrain from appearing too close to the then-not-so-popular Oxford group. ?If you have a Big Book ?manuscript be sure to read page 43¡ªthat is also printer¡¯s copy page 71.

?

It is notable that Bill ¡°asked for guidance¡± when he changed the verbal six-step program to written twelve steps! (PASS IT ON, page 198)

Re: Unfortunate statement

I posted this once before when this apologetic was first raised. Here it is, in full:

For a far more comprehensive and nuanced take on Frank Buchman, see "" Here are several quotes:?

  • Buchman told the New York World-Telegram in 1936, ¡°I thank Heaven for a man like Adolf Hitler, who built a front-line of defence against the anti-Christ of Communism.¡±
  • ¡°But think what it would mean to the world if Hitler surrendered to the control of God. Or Mussolini. Or any dictator. Through such a man God could control a nation overnight and solve every last, bewildering problem ... Human problems aren¡¯t economic. They¡¯re moral and they can¡¯t be solved by immoral measures. They could be solved within a God-controlled democracy, or perhaps I should say a theocracy, and they could be solved through a God-controlled Fascist dictatorship.¡±
  • On reading the World-Telegram interview, the theologian Reinhard Niebuhr wrote, ¡°The social philosophy of the Oxford group, long implicit in its strategy, is made explicit, and revealed in all its childishness and viciousness.¡±

It is within this context that Buchman's "quest for world peace, included attending two Nazi rallies and lunching with Himmler wherein they discussed "politics and spirituality." (citation: ,?Philip Boobbyer)?Heinrich Himmler, of course, was Reichsfuhrer-SS, head of the Gestapo and the Waffen-SS, the architect of the mass murder of Jews in the Third Reich.?Keep in mind this meeting was in 1936, less than a year after German Parliament passed the anti-Semitic ¡°Nuremberg Laws,¡± the ¡°National Citizens Law,¡± and the ¡°Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor.¡± These laws were the basis for the exclusion of Jews ... from all public business life and for the reclassification of the political rights of Jewish citizens. The Jews are returned to the legal position they had occupied in Germany before their emancipation in the 19th century. Jews can no longer exist as German citizens or marry non-Jews." (Citation:?).

From the point in time this posted picture quote references, Frank Buchman was perfectly willing to ignore the plight of Jews as he pursued his "quest for world peace."?He joined a large list of organizations, including the Catholic Church which would make accommodations with the Nazi party. ?

There is a reason why Buchman needed to change the name of the Oxford Group to the Moral Rearmament Army. It had become irrevocably tarnished by Buchman's dangerously naive take on Nazism, fascism and the unamerican attraction to a "theocracy-controlled democracy."?

I post this in order to provide a counterpoint to the unqualified assertion Buchman was pursuing world peace. Context is imperative when it comes to history. Like so many others of that era, this quest combined Nazi appeasement with wishful ¡°pie in the sky¡± thinking. The cost of ignoring the fate of Jews in Germany, in associating with Nazis and ignoring Jewish leaders of that time, contributed to the creation of a holocaust that would take the lives of more than 6 million Jews.

The hubris necessary to consider that an appeal to fascist butchers and invoking the name of god would somehow lead to world peace can hardly be ignored. Am I saying Buchman is to blame for all of this? Of course not. He¡¯s just one of many religious leaders and organizations which put the goal of stopping a yet-to-occur world war and their fortunes ahead of the already-occurring marginalization and oppression of Jews. His ¡°quest for world peace¡± should be placed firmly within this larger context.

Finally, the original posted picture shows verbatim text from a Wikipedia Page called . Here is what Wikipedia put on that front page as a warning:

Re: Unfortunate statement

After hearing the presentation in RecoverySpeakers.com's presentation by Jay S. of Sedona, I gained a new respect for Buchman and the Oxford Groups and see where the mis-quote, out of context has given the Oxford Group a "bad name".

"Slowly and sometimes painfully, I began to do the work that taught me how to live a sober life.? It was not done by doing things I agreed with.? It was done by doing things that were apparently illogical, nonapplicable, and having nothing to do with my specific problems.? The actions I took through the Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous became the tools that led me to freedom and sobriety."--from Clancy's story in the book "1000 Years of Sobriety:? 20 People x 50 Years."
