Re: The Dark Promises
I started a meeting a few years ago in CA with sponsees meeting is called, "Promises Prayers Instructions and Warnings" (and have since started one here in Myrtle Beach).? Originally Warnings was Black Promises (we thought that was original).? We study from 0 (the blank page to 160 two paragraphs at a time identifying and hiliting PPI&W's .
As Thom mentioned and I can confirm the first 164 is chock full of Black Promises (read Warnings; also full of Promises Prayers and Instructions). -- SW John |
Re: The Dark Promises
Page 66 - A BB workshop I went to referred to 7 "death threats" between the 3rd & 4th columns of the Resentment Inventory. Along with what I also call "the bedevilments" on p. 52 -- Is this part of what you're referring to?
I think there may be more than 12, although that # is in keeping with the recurrence of the # 12 in the BB.? |
Re: The Dark Promises
I've actually never heard that quote called that, doesn't mean it isn't accurate, it only means I haven't heard of it. In the various parts of the country and world that I've been to and honored ti attended meetings in, that section of the book is always called something similar to or equal to "the bedevilments".
That being said, the book is, however, littered with promises that are indeed ominous; warnings and promises of what will happen to us if we don't do certain things (because those things are what had happened to them of course; it is a book of experience after all). I've never made a list of these on their own (yet?) but I do know that they're there. Could that be what you're referring to? Or are you referring to this passage on page 52? Best, Thom R. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýShe is sometimes identifiable by what recovering alcoholics call the ¡°dark promises,¡± symptoms of alcoholism that are detailed in Alcoholics Anonymous' Big Book: ¡°We were having trouble with personal relationships, we couldn¡¯t control our emotional natures, we were prey to misery and depression, we couldn¡¯t make a living, we had a feeling of uselessness, we were full of fear, we were unhappy, we couldn¡¯t seem to be of real help to other people.¡± (Susan Cheever) The quote is from "We Agnostics", p.52

Glastenbury information
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý? I have attached a map of the townships of Shaftsbury and Glastenbury, Vermont. ? Ebby stated that he stayed with Rowland Hazard in the town of Shaftsbury.? (EBBY, THE MAN WHO SPONSORED BILL W., page 59.) ?? ? I always had the idea that Rowland resided in the Sugarbush cabin in Glastenbury. ? ? The following paragraph may explain: ? ?In 1937, the State of Vermont officially removed the Glastenbury Township and incorporated all the area into the legal town of Shaftsbury. However, the large area is still identified as Glastenbury on official maps. (ROGERS BURNHAM, THE ORIGINAL MAN BEHIND BILL W., by Leslie Cole. -- page 87).? Apparently, according to the map, there are no roads up to the Glastenbury cabin, Sugarbush. It must have been a 6 -to 8 mile mountain-hike to Shaftsbury township. ?? ? Bob S ? On Behalf Of Mike G (ATL) ? First version of "six steps" I ever saw "written" was in the Big Book story "He Sold Himself Short" by Earl Treat. My first "viewing" of it was in a 3rd Ed. in 1988, but the page number (292) is the same as in the 2nd Ed. where it first
showed up. I have an eleventh printing (1970) of the 2nd Ed. (1955), but the BB with all my markings is a 25th printing (1986) of the 3rd Ed. (1976).

The Empty Jug, June 1946
It's been four years since my last similar request (AAHL 11268). Many of you are aware of THE EMPTY JUG publication that originated in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was published from September, 1944 until June of 1946. The newspaper was almost entirely a one-man show under the direction of Carl K, who started publishing THE EMPTY JUG with a total of six weeks of sobriety. The newspaper turned out to be a lightning rod of controversy. I am specifically looking for the last issue of THE EMPTY JUG, which was published in June of 1946. Apparently there is quite a controversial editorial that caused a firestorm. I will gladly pay a reasonable fee for a copy of that issue. Carl died on July 13, 1946 of a reported cerebral hemorrhage in Memphis, Tennessee. I believe he may have not been older than 42 years old, but that is not confirmed. I already have Volume 2, Numbers 1, 1 1/2, and 6. That's two in September of 1945 and one in March, 1946. Any other copies would be very helpful, but the real target is the June of 1946. Thanks in advance. Gary Neidhardt Lilburn, GA 30047 770-364-4044 |

The "Six-Step program as it was at that time": 1. Complete deflation. 2. Dependence and guidance from a Higher Power. 3. Moral inventory. 4. Confession. 5. Restitution. 6. Continued work with other alcoholics. Six Step program
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý? I once believed that the six-step program, practiced before the Big Book was written, was sort of written in stone. Now, I am not sure the were even written, at least not to a great degree. Three versions of these six-steps are listed in ¡°A NARRATIVE TIMELINE OF AA HISTORY,¡± by Arthur S.? (Page 21 of the 2007 version) ? ? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDear AA History lovers, Et al, ? The Hazard family owned two cabins just a few miles south of Bennington, VT.? One was called ¡°Ladyhill,¡¯ named after Rowland¡¯s sister Caroline, in Shaftsbury, VT.? The other was just a short distance east of Shaftsbury.? It was called ¡°Sugarhill¡¯ ?in a? community then named Glastenbury. ? The ¡°Sugarhill¡± cabin is where Cebra Graves and Shep Cornell were enjoying a swimming party when they heard about Ebby Thacher¡¯s ?pigeon-shooting difficulty and responded to help during the late summer of 1934. ? I had a map drawing of the general area between these two places, but it has been lost. ???If anyone could send me this map or other information about these two Hazard cabins, I would be thankful. It probably came from a book about the Hazards. ?

Hi all,
Preparing a presentation and I'm having a tough time finding any pics of Rosary Hall. I'm especially interested in the "RHS" initials, that according to "Dr. Bob & the Good Oldtimers" pg 198 are "carved in flowing script over the door..." A sly nod to Dr. Bob by Sister Ignatia.? When they passed in all their answers Bill counted over 120 enlightening things from the group. He narrowed them down to 12 for the book. |
