On Behalf Of Mike G (ATL) ? First version of "six steps" I ever saw "written" was in the Big Book story "He Sold Himself Short" by Earl Treat. My first "viewing" of it was in a 3rd Ed. in 1988, but the page number (292) is the same as in the 2nd Ed. where it first
showed up. I have an eleventh printing (1970) of the 2nd Ed. (1955), but the BB with all my markings is a 25th printing (1986) of the 3rd Ed. (1976).

The Empty Jug, June 1946
It's been four years since my last similar request (AAHL 11268). Many of you are aware of THE EMPTY JUG publication that originated in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was published from September, 1944 until June of 1946. The newspaper was almost entirely a one-man show under the direction of Carl K, who started publishing THE EMPTY JUG with a total of six weeks of sobriety. The newspaper turned out to be a lightning rod of controversy. I am specifically looking for the last issue of THE EMPTY JUG, which was published in June of 1946. Apparently there is quite a controversial editorial that caused a firestorm. I will gladly pay a reasonable fee for a copy of that issue. Carl died on July 13, 1946 of a reported cerebral hemorrhage in Memphis, Tennessee. I believe he may have not been older than 42 years old, but that is not confirmed. I already have Volume 2, Numbers 1, 1 1/2, and 6. That's two in September of 1945 and one in March, 1946. Any other copies would be very helpful, but the real target is the June of 1946. Thanks in advance. Gary Neidhardt Lilburn, GA 30047 770-364-4044 |

The "Six-Step program as it was at that time": 1. Complete deflation. 2. Dependence and guidance from a Higher Power. 3. Moral inventory. 4. Confession. 5. Restitution. 6. Six Step program
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý? I once believed that the six-step program, practiced before the Big Book was written, was sort of written in stone. Now, I am not sure the were even written, at least not to a great degree. Three versions of these six-steps are listed in ¡°A NARRATIVE TIMELINE OF AA HISTORY,¡± by Arthur S.? (Page 21 of the 2007 version) ? ? I have learned that members of the Akron group relied heavily on the Four Absolutes: ??Honesty, Unselfishness, Love and Purity. ? ¡°AA COMES OF AGE ,¡± pages ?160 ¨C 161, Bill W. writes: ? ? It was called ¡°Sugarhill¡¯ ?in a? community then named Glastenbury. ? The ¡°Sugarhill¡± cabin is where Cebra Graves and Shep Cornell were enjoying a swimming party when they heard about Ebby Thacher¡¯s ?pigeon-shooting difficulty and responded to help during the late summer of 1934. ? I had a map drawing of the general area between these two places, but it has been lost. ???If anyone could send me this map or other information about these two Hazard cabins, I would be thankful. Hi all,
Preparing a presentation and I'm having a tough time finding any pics of Rosary Hall. I'm especially interested in the "RHS" initials, that according to "Dr. Bob & the Good Oldtimers" pg 198 are "carved in flowing script over the door..." A sly nod to Dr. Bob by Sister Ignatia.? Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Mike Mike Margetis mfmargetis@... |

Re: When did the 9th Step Promises become AA's Promises?
I started in Jan 1980. In Barrington, Northern?IL. The 9th step promises were read at some club meetings, Like Palatine?IL Alano, but not much at other meetings back then, if memory serves. Never heard them referred to as "AA Promises" tho' Later on there arose a hobby of BB mining for "promises" for every step and Tradition, it seems. On Sat, Jun 20, 2020 at 12:57 PM <tgifcreations@...> wrote: When i came to AA in June 1985 i really don 't remember them being read at meeting. I know for a fact that they were not read at my homegroup. Seems like the in the 90's you started to hear them at more meetings and by 2000 they seemed to be accepted as something? you read at meetings. I have never cared for them since I think it makes people think these thing will start as soon as you quit drinking..? They never say that they are talking about themat Step 9. well that iss my two cents worth. I scanned the page from The Book That Started It All and the 4th edition of the BB. The firsts one si hard ot read and i don't see them be counted like the Steps and the second can be read. Thanks , Bob Hickey --

Thank you Steve for sharing your exciting experiences at the 1995 International Convention at San Diego. ??Six of us flew out from the Richmond, Indiana, area and by the luck-of-the-draw I landed on the 15th floor of the Marriott Hotel that was actually connected to the Convention Center! Better yet , the balcony overlooked the bay with yachts to view directly below. ?The rest of the Richmond crew also settled in nice rooms in the same hotel. ? I was the first to arrive in my large room with two King-sized rooms all to myself¡ªI was indeed living like King Farouk! However, the next night ??here came the many others from Los Angeles (Where had I lived for years) to share the room with me. This not only filled not only both beds but much of the floor! That was okay, but most of them snored so loudly that King Farouk found it necessary to sleep out on the balcony the rest of the stay.? Thank you, God¡ªbig joke! Ha. ? One of the highlights was to shake hands with Nell Wing (Bill¡¯s long time Secretary) with whom I had previously corresponded. Also, met Earl Marsh, MD (Physician Heal Thyself), and of course it is always a delight to hear Clancy speak¡ªthis time it was the Traditions. I also posed with a big Big Book (attached) ? Also, I was introduced to a lady from Washington DC who was also a BB thumper; this opened the door for many invitations to speak at DC, Delaware and Baltimore over these last 25 years. ? Great times! Thanks for the reminder. ? Bob S * ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Steve Flower ? Hello Thom, and thanks for the flashback!? San Diego was my first ever International, and my first "AA vacation." I'd been to several AA roundups near my home-at-the-time in Kansas City, but this would be a whole new experience.? I remember landing at the SD airport, and seeing banners all over the terminal with the International logo - nothing identifying it as AA, of course - and my surprise when there were people standing in Conference t-shirts shouting out "WELCOME TO **SAN DIEGO!"? It was the same feeling I'd had the year before, arriving at Dr. Bob's house, and seeing 12 members on each of the 12 steps shaking hands and saying, "Welcome home..." It brought me to tears. ? There are hundreds of memories I could share - but the first of two that stood out was seeing one of the book sellers who had closed up for a break, coming back to find a whole bunch of his inventory gone - seems the convention goers had just helped themselves.? He was racing around his little stand, looking for stuff, when we stopped and asked if he needed help and if he was OK, he said, "I thought I'd been robbed - but I found a book bag - stuffed with cash!" From what he could tell, the cash was considerably more, it seemed, than the stock he was missing.? I remember him smiling, holding this bag of cash, and saying, "I wouldn't have believed it, but I think I'm ok..." ? The second, and more enduring one, was walking from what was the Pan-Pacific Hotel a short ways to the Convention Center.? There were trolley tracks that were being guarded by police (lest any of us step out and get run over), so we were waiting for the trolley to pass.? I spoke to the poor policeman, who was in black shorts, black short-sleeve uniform shorts, and black sneakers, in the bright San Diego sun,? and it was clear he was tired and HOT.? I said to him, "You and your city have been so gracious to us, and we're thankful for that - but I'll bet you're ready for us to get the hell out of your town, aren't you?"? He lit up in a nearly-ear-splitting grin, laughed, and said, "HELL no, sir!? You guys go home, get some more money, and you all come right back here!? As convention people go, you folks have been better than the Republicans, better than the Democrats, better than the Baptists or Catholics or even the American Library Association!! We LOVE having you people here!? Can you imagine what it's like for POLICE to have 80,000 people in and out of Jack Murphy Stadium, three times, and no drunk driving accidents?!?? No sir, in my book, you people are welcome ANYTIME!"? We all had a good laugh, the gates went up, he waved us on in blessing and farewell, and we went on to the convention center.? ? THAT - seeing the impact that more than 55,000 AAs, and 24,000 Alanons, Alateens and their families, had on one policeman, spoke volumes about the collective recovery in the 12-step programs on that city.? It made me proud to be a sober member of AA, in a whole new and powerful way. ? Steve F, Springfield, MO 12-12-90 ? On Mon, Jun 29, 2020 at 5:07 AM Thom R. <thombone@...> wrote:

Re: AA San Diego 1995 - 25 years ago TODAY
I just released a labor of love I've been working on for the past few weeks: The entire box set of tapes that I purchased at the 1995 convention, one that I have saved for all of these years (and that somehow miraculously survived a catastrophic house fire that we suffered a few years ago).
The recordings and some supplemental materials are all in the file section now here at AAHL, uploaded both as a folder and separately also as a ZIP archive OF that folder. So however you would like to access this box set, you now have choices. The fun is just getting started here at AAHL, please do share the links to these recordings(or to the ZIP archive) as you see fit, tell people about AAHL and let's share our love of AA history with each other and with the world. I will share some more of my experiences concerning the convention soon, as well, but I'm really, really burnt out right now trying to get this released on time. What irony that I was able to upload it at the VERY MOMENT that the "Opening Big Meeting" was happening, to the hour, exactly 25 years ago! =) Okay more later,? but please do share your experiences concerning this convention if you would? Also if you have any more information about it, please share that too if you would be so kind? Best, Thom |
