¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Thom,
Thanks for all you do. I have enclosed a prior posting and some info I have
found about the person mentioned. My question is
does anyone know what issue of the Grapevine the picture or pictures?
were in? An archivist at GSO went through all the issues
from 1954-1958 and didn¡¯t find an article. I don¡¯t know if they checked for
photos. The digital access to past issues only has
the articles and not pics or covers. Any help would be fantastic!
Again, Thanks for all your work!
Stay Safe !!

?
You can also go to the AA History Facebook group at https://facebook.com/groups/2244755489165177 and ask your question. Im sure someone would be happy to post that information¡.. One of the most interesting things on that page says Fitz had a slip or 2. I always thought he never did. But its not clear exactly what that means!
Gene
[Moderator edit: clarified for you by adding the URL to our very large Facebook group that is also loaded with information. Of course there are other groups too, we have no monopoly on anything... But I can't vouch for them. -Thom R. AAHL Moderator] On Mar 19, 2024, at 4:36 AM, info@... wrote:

Re: First Edition Stories - ¡°successes¡± and ¡°failures¡±. Bill Wilson¡¯s notes.
Per Bill W.'s note, the first A.A. book off the press is the one in our collection at Stepping Stones Archive. It has a handwritten "key" in the Table of Contents and each number represents whether a personal story contributor had a "slip" or not.
We encourage you to register for our Online Archive Portal at??to view material as we add items with the help of remote volunteers. We also encourage you to contact our Achives & Collections Manager for more information about that specific item and anything in our collection, including the Bible mentioned in another response. We have a number of lists by the Wilsons or others in our collection tracking early member's sobriety. Her email is archive@... |

Re: It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of Bob S.
Here is the obituary. I am sharing the letter sent to me this morning by Bruce C because it is not only beautiful but also informative. More information is in this letter, including a link to the memorial page itself and Bruce's eulogy.
Also attached here is what is already described in this text as well. Here is the letter, below. Thom R. AAHL Moderator 18 March 2024 ? Thom ? Here is Bob's Obituary. I will be at the services on Friday. ? Bob guided me in AA History and researching our history and local Central Indiana history along with Glenn Chestnut (and correcting some history too). I will always remember his great works in his writings, short stories or articles for various newsletters (I have kept them in a folder on my hard drive along with his books). He was a good painter too. (see attachment). Rest in Peace Bob!?? ? Robert "Bob" William Stonebreaker JUNE 30, 1932 - MARCH 13, 2024 ? Robert William Stonebraker of Richmond, Indiana born in 1932 passed away after a short illness on March 13, 2024. Bob was his own person and experienced life to the fullest. During youthful years he sought new adventures. After leaving Richmond and serving in the Army, he lived in New Orleans where he was a waiter understudy at Antoine¡¯s Restaurant. At one point he spent three months working on a shrimp boat ¨C avoiding shellfish for decades. Bob relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s where he would live for thirty years. His sister Charlene and family drove to California to visit. Bob suggested they meet at Trader Vics where they might see a star - he was right. Bob arrived at the restaurant on a motorcycle and long hair to his shoulders ¨C perfect for the period. He drove a cab for a living and gave the family a grand tour of Beverly Hills pointing out famous movie star homes. Bob was a self-taught artist honing his craft to a high level of accomplishment. He studied and copied old master works but excelled painting Christ for churches. Bob¡¯s favorite museum was the Louvre in Paris. He had a particular interest in renaissance poetry. While in California Bob met Deana Koorsen and they were married seven years. The couple returned to Richmond where Bob began a career at the Richmond State Hospital working with recovering addiction patients. He was a 40-year devoted-proud member of Alcoholics Anomouys and became a regionally recognized leader in the organization. Bob authored the Wayne County history of the ¡°Club¡± and archived hundreds of writings about AA.
Bless You Thom on carrying the message with the AAHistoryLovers and its Anniversary. ? Yours in History Bruce C |

Re: First Edition Stories - ¡°successes¡± and ¡°failures¡±. Bill Wilson¡¯s notes.
On August 23 and 24 in 2004 I was at Stepping Stones reading some of the info on Bill W. especially all I could find on the last six months of his life. Here is my info on Bill's BB which I did get to see.
Bill's Big Book ~ Noted as the first book off the press and that it was bigger than normal books. It is noted as a gift to Lois in 1951 ?? It has Bill's notations in the front by the story titles with a code above (for instance it may be noted "Out" as the person went back to drinking so the story would be out of the next edition) It also has numerous pencil marks on various pages where editorial changes were noted for the next edition The original dust cover is laminated and kept in the same box. Bill's Big Book and a normal sized wartime Big Book were photographed side by side for comparison (exact same number of pages and words) and one can see the major size difference. Lois's Bible. Only saw the large bible inside page where Bill had written four times - twice in 1929 -on the same page and under each other ~ that he was quitting drinking. |

First 164 pages
In 1995 at the General Service Conference the Conference Literature Committee recommended that:
?? The first 164 pages of the Big Book Alcoholics Anonymous, the Preface, the Forwards,
? ¡° The Doctors Opinion¡±, ¡°Doctor Bob¡¯s Nightmare¡± and the Appendices remain as is.
This was passed as an Advisory Action
|
||
Re: Question concerning the first section of the Big Book?
The way the conference works and voting works it would not be possible to have an advisory action of that nature. It's not possible to have a vote that includes "never" doing something.? A different conference can come along and change it. So that never happened.

First Edition Stories - ¡°successes¡± and ¡°failures¡±. Bill Wilson¡¯s notes.
Hello all,
I recall reading a long time ago in the original AAHL group about a copy of the first edition which had Bill Wilson¡¯s notes on successes and failures of the people whose stories were included in the first edition of Alcoholics Anonymous. I believe it noted three groups. Those that stayed sober. Those that drank again but eventually gained sobriety. Those that drank again and did not gain sobriety. I seem to recall reading that the book was kept at Bill and Lois¡¯s home Stepping Stones. My question is has anyone here actually seen this book and does anyone have a photograph of the notes Bill made (and perhaps a transcription)?? |

Question concerning the first section of the Big Book?
Years ago, the General Service Conference voted that the First Section of the Big Book would never be changed.

Re: It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of Bob S.
I have had a great Sponsor Sponsee (History) relationship with him for last 9 years.
I would regularly talk to him on the phone in the initial few years but then he had issues with hearing and he insisted that we exchange emails. I would endorse all that has been said by others about him with a special mention on his humility: Once I asked him: Bob, it would be nice to know if you have a Sponsor? Very humbly he said yes and named his Sponsor along with the Sobriety dates of both of them. My respect for him grew 10 folds. Love you Bob, stay blessed ? And other founders books I am ? gsr at a conference and we are discussing all these negative changes. Better get involved! [Moderator comment: I approved this message so that I could add this comment. AA History Lovers is not an activist group. We are a research group and we try to stay in the center as much as possible on every issue. We are also not, and I must make this clear, we are NOT an AA group! What people do on their own time is their business and not the business of AA History Lovers. There are no requirements for membership other than to agree to do what we do. We collect, store, archive, share, brainstorm, research, and even discuss the history of alcoholics anonymous and anything even remotely related to it. That is our primary purpose and that is what I'm sworn as moderator to uphold in my decision making when it comes to content shared here. I am trying to keep the legacy of the past curators of this group as intact as possible while also allowing for growth in this new digital age (hence the Facebook platform that is currently just shy of 39,000 members. Glenn told me that I was crazy for trying to do AAHL on social media and he's right--but it seems to be working anyway lol. I assured him that in no way will the classic AAHL (this) go away. When I explained to him that the social media version is an experiment and even if it comes of age it's never going to replace this, he gave his blessing. He told me it's my ship to steer now and if I want to run it into an iceberg that's my business, haha! So what is this platform over here, "AAHL Classic"? Well, this is the place you go when you want to ask a hardcore question to a bunch of hardcore researchers. Don't be fooled by the low traffic. It's dense with information here. We're extremely careful with what we allow through the system and make sure that everything is as vetted as possible. Only in special cases like this do we relax the restrictions in order to celebrate, mourn, discuss something really important that might come up or explain things like this once in a long long while.? I just had to say all that because it needed to be said. I'm sure everyone in this group has an opinion on what's going on in AA right now. Some of that is relevant to share here and in fact I'm gearing up to share some of it in the fairly near future. But it's going to be in a nonpartisan context. I must make that clear. Our mission is to share the information regardless of how we feel about it. It's also our collective goal to try to keep our opinions to ourselves and to approach this group in the spirit of research sharing with which it's intended. In other words, we must leave our prejudices outside even if we all might agree, even if we all have the same one. The data we're collecting is just too important and I think it's because of this that we're the strongest, longest surviving and largest AA history group that does this on the internet (that we know of).? Sorry for the long explanation but it's an important one. Glenn stressed these things to me when he was turning it over to me and I've been trying to uphold it and I need to explain that. So, Sharon, I want you to know that you did nothing wrong by trying to share what you did. But on a normal day I would have had to moderate this post and I would have emailed you explaining this to you. But I thought since it hasn't been said in a while, I needed to say it to everyone-- especially with the, yes, pretty interesting stuff going on right now. But in the meantime, while all of that plays out, we're going to stick with our primary purpose and focus on what we're all about: documenting the history of AA. I don't think we could handle any other rabbit holes as a group. There's so much to cover even going back hundreds of years leading up to this incredible movement. So we got to try to keep it simple because there's nothing simple about this history already. ? Okay rant over. ? Thank you so much for being a member of this group! You are very much appreciated. All the best, --Thom R. AAHL Moderator] ?
