Description:
"Saints Run Mad - A Criticism of the 'Oxford' Group Movement" by Marjorie Harrison. Released in 1934, right in the "thick of things" in terms of AA history, this highly critical book of the Oxford Group is quite as fascinating of a read as the book is rare. But no matter, we have it now at AAHL. And so do you. .**NOTE: This is the CORRECTED version that includes the page one from my personal copy. If you have any other version, you're probably missing page one. Delete that and grab this one. I also repackaged the entire PDF and brought it up to full PDF standards. -Thom R

Thanks for this Thom.

Very interesting... She certainly seems to have an axe to grind.

Thanks a lot Thom.? Interesting opinions, some of which I shared {pre AA).
Just an FYI... page 1 is missing!

Gerry Winkelman.

[Moderator comment: You are correct. I am not the source of the digital version of the document but I can fix it because I happen to have the real book also, thanks to Mike Fitzpatrick for that. So I'll get it fixed and upload a fixed copy of the PDF. I will send out an alert when that is done. Thank you for letting us know, Gerry! -Thom]

Description:
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS - 1939-1942, 1943 and 1944 Volume 1 (Combined) "The Archives of the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous" I have assembled these three volumes into one large protected PDF v1.7 (with 1.6 compatible security) files that are set to viewing only, because AA History Lovers is not 100% certain of the legal status of these. So, citing "fair use", we are taking this position, currently: We DO know that they are out of print and we DO know that the clippings within are way past copyright but the work itself has no date on it, so we have no idea of its status. So, in the interest of academia, research and further study (which is what we do here), AAHL is making these difficult to find clipbooks available for study. If we get further clarification as to what's going on with these we will either make them less available (in case of a claim) or more available (unprotected and in even higher resolution) if that clarity is ever given to us. That's our position and pending new information ' we're stacking to it! Enjoy! ;) Special thanks to Jeff E. for providing the (camera'd) pages and to Mike F. for providing the covers so that I could put all of this together for distribution via AAHL. Thom R. AAHL Administrator (AAHL Classic is hosting the combined three volumes because it is more likely that over here,. we are using full computers and would have the horsepower to load and view a PDF file of this size. IF you want the PDF files as separate files you can obtain them on the Facebook group in the files section, or just ask me directly. They are too large for e-mail though but I can get them to you somehow if, like some, you don't want to use Facebook.)

Looking for a copy of the 1993 GSC Report

It doesn't matter to me if it's the confidential or the redacted, but I am looking for access to a copy of the 1993 General Service Conference report.

Does anyone happen to have access to it, or a copy of it?

If so, please let me know in a direct email. thomr021092@...

THANK YOU!

Moral Psychology apparently had some appeal to psychiatrists and doctors treating addiction in the 1920's and 30's. Though further research may determine a more precise definition, I agree with the opinion of forum poster, "Murako" in 2014:

>What is the "Moral Psychology" that is mentioned in the "Dr.'s Opinion." What did this precisely mean in a professional sense to Dr. Silkworth?
>It was used as a broad term most simply thought of as "ethics." The field encompasses too much to know how Silkworth would have precisely defined it. It would be like defining the exact meaning of >"psychology" or the precise meaning of "ethics" or "morality." It is a catch all phrase used to *avoid* giving a precise definition.

At its core is the idea that the addicted person is too centered on their own problems, feelings and concerns. Hence, taking an interest in the needs of another person is part of the solution.? In Sylvia K's Big Book story, "The Keys of the Kingdom" [page 271 4th edition] she wrote that here doctor had her "performing the most menial labor for his charity patients." This was the doctor who obtained a copy of the Big Book shortly after it was printed and brought it to her.

There also seems to be an element of introspection or self-examination involved in moral psychology.

Here is an excerpt from Dr. Silkworth's April 21, 1937 article in Medical Record: Later in this article he puts the words moral psychology in quotes, which may support the idea that it was not a course of treatment that was fully formed, defined and accepted at the time of the doctor's writing.

MORAL PSYCHOLOGY

We believe that this decision is in the nature of inspiration. The patient knows he has reached a lasting conclusion and experiences a sense of great relief. These individuals, introverts for the most part, whose interests center entirely in themselves, once they have made their decision, frequently ask how they can help others.

Re: Big Book Dr¡¯s Opinion

It is unknown how much William Griffith Wilson contributed to THE DOCTOR¡¯S OPINION although Silkworth wrote the first letter in July of 1938.

?

¡°The Doctor¡¯s Opinion¡± contains two short statements written by Bill Wilson, the first introducing a letter from Silkworth, and the second serving as a preface to the doctor¡¯s longer statement enthusiastically endorsing the solution advocated in the book. Exactly how these two men went about cobbling these different elements together is unclear; or is it known how (or if) they edited each other¡¯s work. We also do not know whether Silkworth¡¯s chapter was part of the manuscript submitted to Uzzell in early January, or if it was completed sometime later that month or even in early February¡ªalthough Wilson¡¯s letter to Frank Amos on January 4 could be read as confirming that the chapter had not been written at that time.¡±

?

Excerpt From

Writing the Big Book

William H. Schaberg

?

It should also be noted that Dr. Silkworth¡¯s name was not added to the letters until a couple of printings into the Second Edition.?

?

¡°Moral Psychology¡± is not incompatible with the ¡°spiritual solution.¡± In the Second Printing of the First Edition Appendix II was added. it suggests: ¡°?The terms "spiritual experience" and "spiritual awakening" are used many times in this book which, upon careful reading, shows that the personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism has manifested itself among us in many different forms.¡±

One more thing. Here¡¯s a good article about Silkworth:?

Re: Big Book Dr¡¯s Opinion

Good Morning,

Great questions of which I do not have answers to.? I thought, however, that you might be interested in the following which is a motion to Return The Doctor's Opinion back to page 1 as it was when our success rate was much higher.? It is my contention that the average reader starts out on page 1 and does not read forwards or prefaces.? Decades as an educator appear to back-up that opinion.? The motion will be discussed at our GSC 2022 Agenda Item IX.??

Re: Ancient substance of the Serenity Prayer

Bob S,
"Article per se is not really evidence of traceability from stoicism to the serenity prayer. While there could be an interrelationship it isn't in evidence in the document. The prior occurrence or existence of a similar idea is not prima facie evidence of interrelationship. Frankly given the distances and time logically it could well be an instance where randomness is assumed to be relationship . I would assert that it is as likely to be random and unrelated. The provinance of the prayer would need to be identified to the education or training. Its mere existence is not therefore logically related.
