Ric, I'm in agreement?with you that the two individuals in the Drs opinion were Hank P and Fitz M. I don't believe there is any significant controversy regarding the reference to Hank, as he was the first person to get and stay sober for a longer period of time in NY with Bill's help. The brief description in the Drs opinion of the second man, who is described as "...deciding his situation hopeless, had hidden in a deserted barn, determined to die." Of course this description does not line up in any way with Bill's story. However, in re-reading the brief bio of Fitz, written by the first moderator of AAHL, Nancy Olson, this particular statement seems to substantiate the background pointing to Fitz. "Then a friend from childhood gave him part of his own farm in Cumberstone, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., to homestead." It is documented that Fitz was likely the third person to get and stay sober for a longer period of time in NY with Bill's help. This point provides a nice symmetry in light of the evidence indicating that Fitz's wife urged him to seek treatment at Town's hospital. And the close relationship Bill and Lois formed with Fitz and his wife would seem to support this reference from Dr. Silkworth. I believe I've read in this forum but may be mistaken as I am having trouble searching for: the two alcoholics refered to at the end of Dr. Silkworth's second letter. |
