Re: Where and when Live Easy But Think First

Dave--

?

The slogan ¡°Think Think Think¡± came from a AA picnic in New York One of the members was Brinkley Smithers, the son of the man who was CEO at IBM. The slogan for IBM was 'think think think'... they had it plastered on every bit if equipment/ads/comercials.

Brinkley brought three huge signs about 4 ft long (each with the logo/slogan 'think') from IBM, He nailed all three of them on the trunk of a tree about 6 inches apart.. He then took a picture of the tree with the signs and had it published in the next issue of the Grapevine.

Everybody thought it was official and clever and soon became a popular sign for AA rooms. It became less and less meaningful later on when members became aware that alcoholics who just think don't do well.

By the way, thank you for the work you do for we 'history-lovers'!

Group,

?

In California we have framed slogans in Calligraphy that are often hung on the walls.? ¡°Live and let live.¡±? ¡°Easy Does It¡± ¡°But for the grace of God¡± ¡°First things First.¡±.? They are usually hung on the wall in that order so that the first word in each one gives us another slogan which is ¡°Live Easy But Think First.¡±

?

At the end of the chapter ¡°The Family Afterward¡± three of those sayings are written.? First things first; Live and let live; and ¡°Easy Does it¡±

?

I have heard that the Think, Think, Think had its genesis in some sort of phrase borrowed from IBM.? As for the But for the Grace of God, I have never heard any type of rumon as to how that was included.

?

Personally I like the original three from the Big Book and I dislike the other two.? I don¡¯t know for sure, but it appears that when one orders those slogans they come in a ¡°boxed set.¡±

?

I am very curious to find out when, where and how we came to use these slogans to hang on walls and how did they become a boxed set.
