New Member Introduction
Hi, I have just joined the group. I have just acquired a 1940s vintage AA109 Craftsman Dunlap lathe in good working order and am about to start setting it up in my workshop. I would appreciate any pointers members of the group can provide about working around its limitations and upgrading it correct them. Immediate concerns: getting readout capability for the cross slide motions and thread cutting tooling. I don't yet have a tool and cutter grinding capability. BTW my decision to acquire this DIY oriented home workshop lathe despite its limitations was influenced by my father's having worked at Sears Roebuck headquarters in 1940 designing power tools and hand tools. He knew Tom Dunlap well, and described Dunlap as his idol, both as a man and business man. I do not know whether my father worked on the design of this lathe, but he would at least have known something about its design. My father did for certain design the new 1940 Craftsman drill press models with the strong and rigid "I-beam" type head support. My father left Sears in 1941 to accept a commission in the Navy. He served as an engineering officer, ultimately as Chief Engineer on USS Tripoli (CVE-64), before returning to civilian life at the end of 1945. I have been lurking for some time, was a member of the Yahoo group. I had one of these lathes but gave it to my son with a new 3 jaw chuck. He scrapped it just recently...what a waste. Recently found another 109 and it has the 4 jaw chuck on it. I will need some change gears eventually. My Lathe is mounted on 1/2 inch steel plate for rigidly. My previous lathe had a bent spindle and I had one made, it was better but not by much. I look forward to what you guys can contribute to getting this "new to me" lathe back in usable order. Jim

Hey guys/gals, I Just joined the group and I'm glad there's still groups like this out there talking about and using these old lathes. Cool story: my great grandpa ran a lathe in a factory making crank shafts for diesel military ships. He bought this 109 lathe for my grandpa for his 12th birthday, and recently, my grandpa gave it to me. My great grandpa was a machinist, my grandpa was/is a machinist / tool and die maker, and i've been professionally CNC machining for 2 years now. I think it's awesome that it's stayed in the family this long. Anyways, i'm glad to have found this group and look forward to learning and sharing with you all. Thanks!

I¡¯ve just gotten a pair of 109 lathes, both in good condition I need feedback on the largest jaw chuck that will fit and the craftsman¡¯s model numbers that apply. A 6¡± chuck just seems too big Mark Harris Berman, A.I.A., P.P. Registered Architect & Professional Planner Principal www.BermanWright.com . Please forgive any misspelling.

Craftsman 109 lathe gear
Thanks to the person who responded to my part number inquiry for the spindle end gear I was able to purchase one on Ebay....

I am working on a Craftsman 109 metal lathe 21270. I am wondering if anyone knows what the gear mounted on the back of the spindle is called or the part number. My lathe has a damaged gear ( this would be the gear needing removal

Gary, First, in the future please DO NOT put your entire message in the message Subject area. Not only does this limit the length of your message to 255 characters, but it makes it quite troublesome for anyone to read what little you can write without first hitting the REPLY button. So limit your Subject to no more than 40 to 60 characters. Now, the part number of the gear you are looking for is A-3221, and the description from the parts list is Spindle Gear. The only thing that I can tell you about that gear is that it is probably a 32T gear. I do not have an AA lathe to look at, so I can't tell you what the ID details are. I would guess that there is a good chance of Boston or some other gear manufacturer making a gear that you can modify to work. But you will need to know the Diametral Pitch (DP) and the Pressure Angle (PA) before you start looking through a catalog. If you asked any other question, I cannot read it because of where you put your message. Robert Downs Moderator

Welcome to the groups.io version of this group. Note at this time I am NOT Moving the AA_109_Lathe_Users_Group from Yahoo. I will wait to see how much activity this group receives and how well Groups.io handles things. I do not like the method Groups.io or more specifically owners of a groups.io groups simply decide to move everyone whether they want to or not. As will all my groups... Everyone is welcome. Topics are only moderated for spam. No politics or religion. So lets see where this group decides to go... :)
