¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJonathan You have to remember these lathes were designed as inexpensive hobby lathes. Keeping that in mind they have their limits.? Improvements to "any" lathe can be done.? But ultimately you still have an inexpensive hobby lathe. Your best bet to stiffen things up is to mount the lathe to a nice heavy stable surface. If you want or need a longer bed they did make longer beds so hunt one down. But you will still have the same design just in longer form which will introduce additional issues for stiffness and twist. Now if you want to accomplish both its time to design and build a new bed.?? :) A casting AKA Gingery style or a steel weldment are options as is tubing filled with dampening material. You CAN finish these at home with hand tools and time.? Or a
machine shop could do the job quick with some $$$

Chris, Right you are!! Just looking to dampen some of the resonance n flex that sometimes shows itself. ?I have never come across a long bed? Guess I¡¯m always in the wrong place or at the wrong time. I¡¯m not looking to turn like we did on my buddies Howa we had access to 24¡± swing x 9¡¯ bed ?? I¡¯ve been working on the idea of a ¡®build a lathe¡¯ project ? ?something to turn and profile gun barrels a bit.. build black powder guns as one of my other interests.. Anyways, thanks for the reply! Respect Always? Jonathan? |
