Re: Drive Pulley

Hopefully Brian has one to sell.?

Re: Drive Pulley

No.? You might get away with using a 3L V-belt for a little while but all of the link belt is too wide and would run (for a few seconds) only on the OD of the pulley.

Thanks guys but no luck on a step pulley that small. I am wondering if a 3L or 3/8 would work for a drive with link belt. That would be a 3/8 belt on a 1/4 lathe pulley.

Bryan,
I would very much appreciate that.

Re: Drive Pulley

I may have one available. I'll take a look this weekend and shoot you an email with details if it looks like a potential solution.

Most are nylon but McMaster.com has some to fit 2L (1/4”) belts.

Re: Drive Pulley

Try McMaster carr.??

Or make one.? I know - how without a lathe.? Many of the DIY guys use a basic wood pulley to get a lathe running. Then make an al replacement..

I only have the Morse Taper dimensions table in Machinery’s Handbook and the reverse-engineered drawings left by Lionel Weightman some 20 years ago to go by.? But at least his drawing of the tailstock ram shows the ram bore to be correct for the big end of the MT0 taper socket but the small end is larger than MT0 so the taper is shorter.? According to the dimension table in M H, the small end should be 0.252” but because the ram drive screw threads are 5/16”-24 and the ram screw must fit inside of the ram, the small end is 0.3125” or thereabouts.? The large end should be 0.3561” and the drawing shows 0.356”.? So a standard MT0 arbor will fit but will not take as much torque before it spins because the taper is shorter.

?

Anyway, for the file containing Weightman’s drawings, log into the AA-109 group on groups.io.? In the lower left corner of the screen, click on Files.? Click on the folder name beginning with “17”.? Download the file AA 109_Parts Drawings Rev 2.pdf?.? The ram drawing is on page 14 of the PDF.? As I said above, I do not know how the drawing differs from the original ram.? The file also contains drawings of several other parts that might be useful.

Its an MT0?? ---? zero.?? But its an odd size zero.? slightly smaller.

A standard MT0 will fit the spindle.

? ? I have been lurking for some time, was a member of the Yahoo group.? I had one of these lathes but gave it to my son with a new 3 jaw chuck.? He scrapped it just recently...what a waste.? Recently found another 109 and it has the 4 jaw chuck on it.? I will need some change gears eventually.? ?My Lathe is mounted on 1/2 inch steel plate for rigidly.? My previous lathe had a bent spindle and I had one made, it was better but not by much.? I look forward to what you guys can contribute to getting this "new to me" lathe back in usable order.? ?Jim

Excellent!

Thanks, Chris!

Re: New file uploaded to [email protected]

In addition to the Yahoo files I have also uploaded the messages...

An archive of ALL the Yahoo messages.? It is in MBOX format.? if you are using Windows you will need a program to open these files.? The following link is an option for a "free" program to do this and should be a trusted download site.

Providing these files in this format gives everyone the opportunity to have access to them and keep them for future reference.? The program also make it MUCH easier to find information contained in the messages.? Unlike Yahoo.

It also means we dont have to "pay" to migrate to this group...

Hey guys/gals,?

I Just joined the group and I'm glad there's still groups like this out there talking about and using these old lathes. Cool story: my great grandpa ran a lathe in a factory making crank shafts for diesel military ships. He bought this 109 lathe for my grandpa for his 12th birthday, and recently, my grandpa gave it to me. My great grandpa was a machinist, my grandpa was/is a machinist / tool and die maker, and i've been professionally CNC machining for 2 years now. I think it's awesome that it's stayed in the family this long. Anyways, i'm glad to have found this group and look forward to learning and sharing with you all. Thanks!

You have to remember these lathes were designed as inexpensive hobby lathes.>>>

Chris,

Right you are!! Just looking to dampen some of the resonance n flex that sometimes shows itself. ?I have never come across a long bed? Guess I’m always in the wrong place or at the wrong time. I’m not looking to turn like we did on my buddies Howa we had access to 24” swing x 9’ bed ??

I’ve been working on the idea of a ‘build a lathe’ project ? ?something to turn and profile gun barrels a bit.. build black powder guns as one of my other interests..

Anyways, thanks for the reply!

Respect Always?
Jonathan?

You have to remember these lathes were designed as inexpensive hobby lathes.

Keeping that in mind they have their limits.? Improvements to "any" lathe can be done.? But ultimately you still have an inexpensive hobby lathe.

Your best bet to stiffen things up is to mount the lathe to a nice heavy stable surface.

If you want or need a longer bed they did make longer beds so hunt one down. But you will still have the same design just in longer form which will introduce additional issues for stiffness and twist.

Now if you want to accomplish both its time to design and build a new bed.?? :)

A casting AKA Gingery style or a steel weldment are options as is tubing filled with dampening material.

You CAN finish these at home with hand tools and time.? Or a machine shop could do the job quick with some $$$

Mark

Some info for you

DISCLAIMER --? I am including some links to Ebay.? They are for reference as Ebay is "convenient" to find things.? I am? NOT the seller, dont know the sellers and am not recommending a purchase from them or even Ebay.? -- ?? Just FYI? :)

This is the original 4 jaw chuck.? Actually a nice piece...

<>

This is an "import" chuck to fit.? All things considered these import chucks are actually good deals.? YES I know.? But seriously the accuracy of the chuck will be better than the accuracy of a 50 year old hobby lathe.? The drawback is the "length" of the chuck or how far out it hangs on the spindle.?

<>

And this is another option...? ER32 chuck

<>

The import chucks can be had from many sources.? So check your prices.? You can make your own backplates and save some $.
