Astronomy for Equity blind and low vision astronomy outreach [email protected]

ANNOUNCEMENT
This group will move to our new?
another platform soon where we'll be creating more community hubs. Stay tuned

This group is for those involved in Astronomy for Equity's community hub for learning to include those with limited or no vision in their astronomy outreach.

The mission?is simple -- get hundreds of astronomy clubs doing public outreach to include those with blindness or low vision. Inclusivity is at the heart of public outreach. The primary activity of amateur astronomers is to share the wonders of the Universe with others. Clubs are interested in including the those who are blind and have low vision when they learn about it but they don't know how to get started or where to turn with questions.

The goals?of the community hub are simple as well. Some have been done many times:

  • Show them how to get started
  • Help them choose resources from the vast collections of them
  • Provide tips

What's different?is the community and social aspect, giving them a place to:

  • Ask questions
  • Share and learn with other beginners
  • Work with others on adapting resources and methods to their place and culture
  • Get help and encouragement along the way
  • Suggest new ideas and get help with them
  • Provide feedback to other resource providers

There are resources, experts, and practitioners around the world. What's missing is the community, with everyone working in isolation.

Think of it as a workshop at a conference. Everyone who attends gets resources, tries them out, and gets excited about them in the group setting. Then they go home and never touch them again. This group is an asynchronous 24/7 workshop that includes people wherever they are. We'll have online meetings as well to talk about what we're doing, successes and failures, new ideas, and so on. Interactive only.

Feel free to join and just listen in if you want. Answer questions and give advice if you like. It's up to you. You can also ask for feedback on the resources you create from those in other places with audiences you don't reach. We're all here to learn and share.

This is an all-volunteer effort but it will have an outsized impact on people around the world and our community. The resource that will make it possible is the passion of those of you in the field and the thousands of astronomy enthusiasts sharing with others around the world.

Astronomy for Equity creates STEM opportunities for marginalized communities through astronomy. The stars are for everyone.
