It was surprising to learn about the carbon fiber rod antenna. There is practically no information available about this outside Japan. Carbon fiber fishing poles are commonly used as antenna masts, but not as actual antenna elements. This seems to be a uniquely Japanese development in the ham world. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I am ordering an AH-730 ATU and am looking at some different length rods. I assume that a 13m rod would perform better than the 7.2m rods on 80m & 160m. I may have to purchase a few different lengths and test.

Bill-san,

You are right. The carbon rod antenna seems very interesting and is getting popular only in JA now.

HPE you¡¯ll be successful.

Re: 80m antenna suggestions

Bill-san,

The carbon rod has more resistance than aluminum. But the merits are cheaper and longer but easy to set up when POTA.

If you also search on YouTube, you¡¯ll find many videos regarding the carbon rod antenna.

I suppose that JJ1XTG, SOCHO-san (a member of A1CLUB) is an enthusiastic fan of the carbon rod antenna. He calls it WWR antenna, Win Win Rod. Don¡¯t know the reason. hihi

Hi Hiro,

Interesting. The construction of the Carbon Fiber Rod antenna reminds me of the CQ OHM / Nagara design for a for a single element with an ATU:

Except they use aluminum tubes.

Re: 80m antenna suggestions

Hi All,

These are great suggestion. I really appreciate this. I wish I had space for a full dipole, but I am limited.

How are the V-dipoles on 80m? Is it very narrow bandwidth?

A friend who works at Icom suggested I also consider the Diamond CP-8040, which is a vertical just for 40m-80m.

However, lately self-made carbon rod antenna with ATU is getting popular among APA-MAN HAMs and POTA activators.
As the name says, people use 7-8m carbon rod as the element and ATU for auto tuning.
Do you have any links to tutorials for these?

Re: 80m antenna suggestions

Hi Bill,

the suggestions that have already given to you are all valid.

If you have enough space, opt for the R9 or for another multiband vertical with built-in 80M.

In case of very limited spaces an EH could be for you:

Re: 80m antenna suggestions

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Bill-san,

Nice to see you here on the A1CLUB reflector. :)

Since there are many APA-MAN* HAMs in JA, there are some off-the-shelf shorten antennas here.

* ¡°APA-MAN¡± means ¡°apartment and mansion¡±. The mansion here means?luxury apartment, though)

However, lately self-made carbon rod antenna with ATU is getting popular among APA-MAN HAMs and POTA activators.

As the name says, people use 7-8m carbon rod as the element and ATU for auto tuning.

If you like a 80m single band shorten dipole, Radix sells good mono band shorten dipoles with selections of 2.5m, 3.6m and 5m each element.

Also MicroVert Is famous for low banders, I suppose, such as for 160m - 40m.

I use a trap dipole for 80/40m. 40m reaches the US if CONDX allows but shorten 80m is only for domestic QSO. hi

HPE this helps.

80m antenna suggestions

I would like to put up an antenna for 80m 3.5MHz but I do not have much space. I can only mount the antenna on my roof (4F), and grounding is not possible. What do A1CLUB members use for 80m antennas? I need some suggestions.
