ICWC TOP9 & A1C ACT5

Hello A1C members
I'd like to heads up 9th date of the months is the deadline for submission
of Top9 Activity.
Top9 Activity is the on-air event which was launched by ICWC (The
International CW Council) and
9th of August is the final date of the first submission.
Entry is easy, just count the number of QSOs which lasted 5minute or more
made on the upper 9KHz of CW-ONLY segment of the band.
Refer to following website for details:

In addition to the Top9 Activity,
A1CLUB's JA members who like to learn & improve "conversational CW by
international Morse code" launched a new event called "ACT5" as an annex
event of the ICWC's TOP9 Activity.
ACT5 stands for A1CLUB CW Talk for 5 minutes.
ACT5 requests QSO lasts 5-min or more by using international Morse code.
Any QSO made anywhere on the CW allowed frequency is countable.

For most of Japanese members, English language is a kind of big hurdle for
conversational QSO by international Morse code.
So ACT5 is mainly set for JA members for their challengeable event.
Detailed information is available at the following website. (sorry written
in Japanese)

I'm always struggling with English language every time when ragchewing with
oversea stations.
I am always grateful to you for being with me in my clumsy English
conversation.

Thank you for reading,
See you on the bands and tell me your story.

Re: Greetings from Akky, JJ1VNV

Dear Hiro-san, Akky-san, Atsu-san,
thanks so much for you kind reply. This is help me a lot on first time operating CW in Japan.
Happy that you could visit and enjoy Heidelberg. Living about 20-25km south. The old town (Altstadt) Heidelberg is very nice, my kids going there to Hoshuko ( ), they are much better in Japanese :-)

I used to be at least once a year in Japan, but due to corona (and war in Russia), this is first time will visit by parents in law since over 3 year. So meeting family and friends is first priority on the list.?
Plan to be mostly in:
- JCC?100102 - –|¾©¶¼ÖÐÑëÇø¡¡(×ãÁ¢Çø¤Ï½ü¤¤±á±õ)
- JCC 1301 - ˆÎÓñ±h¤µ¤¤¤¿¤ÞÊÐÆÖºÍÇø

Honestly I have currently worries if I can setup in such urban environment, hope to find some place maybe try next to Ä«Ìï´¨. As Japanese summer is very hot might need to operate evening. Hope the police will not catch me if the gaijin is setting up a suspicious looking antenna in the night HI HI.

Will at least try listening A1Net in Japan (not sure I can make it). For Europe it's unfortunately unlucky time. Home QTH has just a wire antenna in less than perfect environment. Made QSO with Japan, but need a real big gun DX station and perfect condx.

Thanks so much for sharing CW Handbook 2021. It good for my CW, and also my Japanese. Start to study "»ù±¾µÄ¤Ê CW QSO ¥¹¥¿¥¤¥ë", miss few Kanji, but most OK as CW is international language. BTW: We also used LCWO here when setting up CW-Remote Training (Covid) in my local radio club.? Also using? the Morserino-32 complementary.

Indeed I'll plan to be one month in Japan (most of August and start of September) but my parents in law already booked onsen ryokan in Hakone at this weekend... ¤½¤·¤¿¤éTokyo Ham Fair¤Ï¤Á¤ç¤Ã¤ÈŸoÀí. This is very sad as most gaijin will not be able to join as of strict covid immigration rules and from Europe we can't even use Russian airspace.?
Maybe there is some other time to meet or have a sked or ÇïÈ~Ô shopping tour :-). I found so nice looking morse key from GHD or SUR-¹¤·¿ HI HI, but maybe this is just online available. You can find my Email as usual at .

Re: Greetings from Akky, JJ1VNV

Hello Tom-sam.
Thank you for your reply. I'm very glad to meeting you.
Do you live near Heidelberg?
I like Heidelberg very much.I have stayed several times so far. Especially,I love the ALT STRASSE area und I always stayed in BACKMULDE.:)

Did you come to Japan last year as well?
And were you calling CQ from Tokyo with your friends? I also called, but I didn't succeed, the condition was bad.

When you come to Tokyo this time, let's QSO with QRS QRP!
Of course, you can also try PHONE.
I think you can join A1NET. If you wish for more QRS QSO, please join "GB program".

Now, your questions are....
When I try to explain in detail, it seems to be very long.
and, there are many great OM who are more knowledgeable and experience than me. So, I will give you a brief overview.

1) There are three types of Japan: JCC, JCG, and City Numbers. All numbers represent QTH. All those numbers are different. Therefore, you can know the corresponding QTH by getting the numbers without paying special attention to the three types. This number is very convenient because it will be shorter than area name. For example, in my hometown;
1)QTH IS ADACHI-KU TOKYO
2)JCC 100121
These are same.
It's very short and convenient like this.
By the way, the three types depend on the differences in administrative divisions in Japan.
2) When working portable, it's better to provide a region suffix so the other person won't get confused.
For example, with just JJ1VNV, the other person will understand that I am in Tokyo/KANTO-area. But with JJ1VNV/6, the person understands that I am somewhere in Kyushu. There is a distance of about 1300km over between Tokyo and Kyushu, so the conditions will be different. Regarding QRP, there are people who attach it and those who do not. It seems that it is often attached when you want to insist on QRP, but in the case of a QRP contest, for example, all STNs are QRP, so in that case it is often not attached.
3) In the case of Japanese, preface the sign "I'm going to send WABUN" when typing Japanese. The same applies when the WABUN ends and the English returns. They are "¥Û¥ì"=DO and "¥é¥¿"=SN.
In this way, in Japan, instead of saying "I don't send WABUN", I'm supposed to say "I'm going to use WABUN".

4) The QSO styles that are used daily in Japan are as follows (maybe).

(Report type)
? 599BK style: Mainly used in contests, etc.
? Simple rubber stamp: with CS, RST, NAME, QTH, CU73 ...

(Conversation type)
? Rich rubber stamp: with WX, TEMP, RIG, ANT, KEY ... etc. will be added.
? Conversation style: Close to everyday conversation
It seems that there are many of these.

5) Please refer to here for the Japanese mailing list.
It is on the A1C website.

To:All Japanese YL/OM:
If there are any errors or further information, please correct, teach and help me.

Very Best Regards;

// JJ1VNV, AKKY

VY happy on your Email. My name is Thomas (or Tom in CW) and I¡¯m CW beginner as well about 1 year learning and half year on air.
Planning to stay this summer (Obon) in Japan using my Japan Call JJ1QPB. This is no DX-expedition just family visit so plan using QRP ICOM 705 (+ buying RHM-12 Antenna in Akihabara :-) ).
Hope we have chance for QRS QSO with you and other A1Club members, but need more practice before joining A1NET :-)
So far I listen to Japanese CW QSO only on Youtube, for example A1Club member JA1BJT (). But already have some stupid beginner question on Japanese Morse Code:

1) QTH: in Europe I give ?QTH IS NR HEIDELBERG¡°, in Japan you give only JCC or JCG code and as part of initial call like ?CQ CQ DE JJ1QPB JJ1QPB JCC XYZ¡°, no QTH? Correct?
What is difference on JCC and JCG?
2) Working portable you need to provide region suffix like ?JJ1QPB/1¡°? Is the suffix ?/1¡° needed always mandatory ?even I¡¯m in same region as home QTH? Do you use suffix ?/P¡°, ?/M¡° or ?/QRP¡°?
3) Wabun Code: is it possible to provide names/QTH only in international morse code (?) How can I signal to my QSO partner that I don¡¯t know Wabun?
4) Japanese QSO seem to be vy short (just Call/JCC/RPRT). Maybe I just listen to POTA QSO? Is there also conversational QSO like: QTH, WX, RIG, PWR, ANT etc.?
What is a typical CW QSO pattern in Japan?
5) ÈÕ±¾ÕZ¤âÔ’¤»¤ë¤Î¤Ç¤¹¤¬¡¢ÈÕ±¾ÕZ¤ÎA1C E¥á©`¥ë¥ê¥¹¥È¤ËµÇåh¤¹¤ë¤Ë¤Ï¤É¤¦¤·¤¿¤é¤¤¤¤¤Ç¤¹¤«£¿

Re: Greetings from Akky, JJ1VNV

Thomas-san,

Welcome to A1eML. Following are answers to your questions. Hope this helps you.

1. JCC, JCG
JCC is the numbering of city and JCG is numbering of GUN. GUN is county, usually smaller regions than cities.
JA stations send only JCC/JCG or sometimes with full name like "JCC 1230 / YACHIMATA CITY". (use "/" as a separator)

2. /0-9, /P, /M
When you are QRV away from your QTH printed on your station license, you add "/" + Area Number(0-9) or "P"(Portable), "M"(Mobile). "/QRP" is a little different manner from portable operation identifier.
Please make sure if your station license is mobile station or fix station. If your license is of fix station, you are allowed to QRV only at your QTH printed.

3. Sending QTH on WABUN (Japanese Morse code)
Usually you send the name of QTH by WABUN, not use JCC/JCG.
If you do not understand WABUN, send "NO [DO]". [DO] is "-..---" (one character).
* [DO] = starting WABUN, [SN] = ending WABUN

4. QSO style
There are some styles for JA CW QSOs. We do the conversational QSO called rubber style or free conversation QSO called CW CHAT. A1CLUB presents GB as the rubber style QSO and A1NET for CW CHAT.

If you read Japanese, try to read the CW HANDBOOK which I wrote last year.
