Web Morse Runner (お正月 / New Year 2024 Edition)

Dear CW-Friends,
?
thanks so much for all the feedback on the initial release of Web Morse Runner (aka Christmas Edition).
?
As of all the feedback from the A1Club community I put together a very quick update.
We celebrate Japanese New Year in our Family (like NHK紅白歌合戦 HI HI) So I call this small update: お正月 / New Year 2024 Edition:
?
0.05-beta (2024-12-27) - お正月 / New Year 2024 Edition
  • Added support for Band Conditions QRN, QRM, QSB, Flutter and LID's.
  • New Keyboard shortcut: The shift key is now supported.
  • Calls are now cached in browsers local storage and are not reloaded.
  • Experimental new: Upload your own call file. (Example Calls List contributed by K5GQ)
  • Several important bugfixes.
Details on the Github page:
?
This release is for bugfix and catchup functions of VE3NEA's Windows Morse Runner.
But I hope:
  • Tom-san (DF7TV) as advanced operator finds it more challenging adding band conditions.
  • Izumi-san (BH6BEZ) can use the Space-key as keyboard shortcut.
  • Mark-san (K5GQ) can use the new (experimental) upload function of Web Morse Runner to practice US-Calls with his CW Ops Academy students.
?
The Upload function is "experimental" as I like Hiro-san's idea to upload complete CW-Contest definition files (Calls+Contest Rules as json?), but this needs more changes, like for example how scores are calculated, or special exchanges. etc. As I like to release the new version to fix some bugs, I'll need to look into this file definition again in year 2025.

Re: TRIO ends the repair services for some ancient radios

Dear Hiro-san,
I'm just a new ham radio operator, but even for me Kenwood(TRIO) is a legendary ham radio brand.
This kind of engineering spirit lives in their products and service.?
Recently purchased TH-D75 and yes.... for the price I could have bough many, ....many,... other HT's.... but I don't like to have so many others, but just the one Kenwood.

When it comes to CW: there must be this special spirit too. Many of the operators I hear report TRX TS-XYZ...?
Not sure what Kenwood transceivers make special, or why my impression is to hear many good CW operators on Kenwood?

Personally, don't have yet the budget for a Kenwood HF Radio. As new operator got used to modern Waterfall etc. ... so hope Kenwood will release a new HF radio ...

Unlike other HAM product companies, KENWOOD Japan has been accepting old radio repairs such as TS-520 with an initial inspection fee of Y10,000.

But it will end in this December 2024.

I got my TS-520X almost 50 years ago and KENWOOD has been supporting so far and also it was fun to talk with KENWOOD's old engineers actually.

Here, I am waiting for the next flagship radio after TS-990, with the TRIO label, hoping named with "520". hihi

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

I'm planning to first allow to define a individual calls.txt file. It would be great to compile a list of Japanese calls.
?
You can extract plenty of calls from the various History files of contesting software. Pick your favourite contest, and start filtering.

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

Great!, Thomas-san.

A1CLUB shares member lists with only A1CLUB members.

Try "cw" and "denken" if ID/PW are required.

Maybe the following list is an easy one to convert as you like.

It is a fixed-length, CR/LF terminated text record format.

Column 0 is "'" which indicates it's a data record.
Column 1 to 6 is the call sign.
Column 7 to 18 is the NAME.
Column 19 to 24 is the JCC/JCG number.

If you'll distribute your Morse Runner with AWT, let me announce it to the A1CLUB JA mailing-list.

// HIRO, JJ1FXF

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

I have placed all the CW Club members who are JAs only at:

The A1C membership file gives no names:
It would be nice if you would send me a file with the 'roman' names included. The later updates (this year) on this group now gives the names.
Here is my file for A1C [note names start to appear at end, plus sum others I happen to know]:

Thomas, when you import callsigns fm a file you might want to parse for Name and/or Call so that you can use my normal call history files without having to build your own. Go and look around

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

Dear Hiro-san,
as mentioned in other posts I would like to add more contest modes in future and AWT would be great.

I'm planning to first allow to define a individual calls.txt file. It would be great to compile a list of Japanese calls.

Initially I like to allow using individual call lists (calls.txt) in one of the next releases. It would be great to provide such a list of Japanese calls.

For AWT the exchange must contains the Name, this need little bit more time. If it is possible to use the member list we would have call/name combination.

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

Dear Bill,
thanks so much for your test on Linux. Happy it works on Linux. Sometimes I'm on Linux too and testing.
I have mentioned the Morse Runner Community Edition in my documentation as well.
There are simple reason for me to not yet use the community edition. I like to start with the basics and Web Morse Runner is based on my Mac/Linux port that allows me to debug in case I can not explain some functions (running Mac for dev).
In general Web Morse Runner is very open for "community" contributions. The javascript environment makes it likely easier than Windows/Pascal for people to contribute.

Android: I don't have a test device. In the past I made experience that come people had outdated/limited browser version.
I need and use very new browser-functions. Trying to limit to functions available in all the latest versions of Chrome/Firefox/Safari (Desktop). I hope the automatic 599 issue is limited to Android platform and works on Linux (it works for me).
Izumi-san reported the same, but she reported about the "SPACE" keyboard shortcut, that I'm missing still (but Enter should work).

Happy if you can provide a GitHub-Issue or even a Pull-Request.

This works great on my Linux machines (Debian 12 and Fedora 41) without the need for Wine or Crossover to run. It's not as full featured as the Morse Runner Community Edition but the ease of use in a browser window makes it really handy.

On mobile I tested on GrapheneOS, an Android variant. The default Vanadium browser, based on Chromium, seems to have sound issues. It sounds like a pileup with lots of QRN regardless of whether Single Call or Pileup is selected. In the Brave browser, also Chromium based, the sound issues aren't present. However, using the on-screen keyboard it is a bit difficult to use. Unlike the original MorseRunner, the 599 isn't entered automatically, and hitting the enter key after adding the "Nr." sent doesn't log the contact and clear the fields.

I think this has a lot of potential. Thank you for sharing!

Dear Tom,

Currently this is likely optimized for the CW beginner, so as you see on the defaults I'm only running 30WPM.
As QRQ operator: HST contest mode is still missing. But I'm currently working on CONDX (QSB/QRM/QRN/Flutter/Lids) to make it little harder for the advanced CW operator,...

Re: Web Morse Runner (Christmas Edition 2024)

Dear Hiro-san.
Yes, I hope it works. As I also run in trouble with the mute button, I documented this tipps in the Gihub Readme file..
Technically speaking: Web Morse Runner can work with BT headphone to not destruct others.? The latency is sufficient as you not using a real morse key.?
However practically: the Morse Tone is so efficient (we all love it!) that it might escape headphones in commuting trains and as of the nature of contest logging it is not fun with a virtual keyboard (my personal feeling).?
Some people (e.g. for POTA) log with mobile devices, and my logging software Rumlog has pretty good iOS support. But being portable e.g. in Japan I personally prefer a good old paper log, just don't like virtual keyboard.
