lift assist

Good afternoon all,

We have an Aliner Classic Offroad.? So it is several inches higher than a regular Aframe.? I cannot set it up by myself.? I am 5'4" female and have decent upper body strength.? We have had the springs replaced as recommended by Aliner and can use the pole that is part of the wind kit, but it is still not enough.? We?are considering selling this and going with something that does not need to be set up.? We really like our Aliner and would be interested if the newer models had some sort of hydrolic lift assist or something.? I have tried searching that topic on google, but not finding much.??
Thank you.

I have a 2008 Off Road Classic.? 5'-6" tall, and no longer young.? LOL.? I'm sure you will get a response leading you to a link about adding lift assist struts.? I plan on that at some time, but I pack a two step ladder in the rear storage compartment that I put to the left of the door to help me lift the roof.? So far, so good.??

Gas cylinder lift assist struts are a good idea. Also, check out Slim Potatohead videos on YouTube. He has a video for a simple lever based lift assist.

Hi. I am a 68 year old female who is 5'3". We have a 2012 Aliner classic and I set it up by stepping in the doorway and use a 4 ft long piece of PVC with a foot long cross piece covered with pipe insulation. Very simple. Hope this helps.

I think some models of? chalet a-frame campers offer an electric lift

I just put gas springs on my 2008 Classic and?it works very well. I used Taylor Made springs: 30 psi in the back and 40 in the front. I set them at a 72 degree angle in the fully extended position. Used 8 offset 8 ss brackets. Only had to use a pole for the last few inches to lock the roof into position. No pole needed to take it down.

Allison,

??????????????? I too had the same problem (am only 5¡¯1¡±) and faced having to sell my Aliner.? However, with the help of my local ironworks, we installed a gin pole system powered by an electric winch.? It is wonderful!? Looks a little weird but, facing not being able to use my Aliner, it works very well.? They installed a steel plate on the front of the trailer into which I insert the gin pole.? They also installed a steel attachment plate on either side of the top roof panel.? Steel cables clip from the gin pole to each of the side plates.? I do have to use a two-step folding ladder to insert the gin pole (which lives in my bumper) because I am not that tall.? Before inserting it into the coupler, I clip the steel cables to the side steel plates and attach the winch tape.? Once ready, all I have to do is stand on the ground and push a button at the end of an electrical cord.? It pulls the roof up and then I can get inside to push up the side walls.? Easy peasy!? My ironworks guys are geniuses and am I so thankful to be able to use my trailer.?

??????????????? If you want pics, please send me your email.? Hope this helps. ¨C Barb Foley

If you do end up selling it and going with something else, consider another A frame with electric lift. The Chalet XL models all have push-button lift so there's literally nothing to do to get them setup up other than push a button for 5 seconds.

I've got the XL 1910 model with large bunks and it's fantastic.

There is a DIY article that details a gas spring lift assist installation that has worked well on numerous aframes, and is a vast improvement over the factory installations. It is on the AOC website, here :

https://alinerownersclub.org/diy/gas-springs/

Dave

The Expedition model comes now with a remote control that lifts the roof panels for you.

Rockwood and Flagstaff have A Frame campers with an electric lift. We have a Rockwood A213HW and have found this to work well.

Oh yeah, been there done that. Too many sales reps seem to have no clue how to open ?an Aliner, especially those like mine with dormers that make the roof even heavier. Those gas struts are a big help: they are standard on the Expedition now and maybe on other models too. But here¡¯s how I open mine these days.?

1. Unlatch the roof panels and release the lift/assist poles but leave them hanging - don¡¯t swing them around and re-latch yet.?

2. On the door side, use the lift pole to prop the back panel open. It won¡¯t be open quite enough to swing the top part of the door open, but if you push up a bit on the rear panel, you can do it.?

3. Climb inside and stand up. I keep a mop with a foam head right inside the door. Grab it and put the foam end against the rear roof.?

4. Push up the roof with the mop. It will click into place on the side you¡¯re pushing. If it doesn¡¯t click all the way across, just use the mop to give it a push on the other side.?

5. Lift your side panels into place and lock tbem. Then go outside and clip the lift poles in place to lock the front and back panels together and prevent wind problems.?

I went through a period of complaining that I always needed two people to set up until someone showed me this. I do have a gin pole that attaches to a manual winch I can put on my TV but I haven¡¯t used it in years. Maybe it will be helpful in another ten years :-)

Hi, saw you post on a hydraulic lift assist for Aliner. There¡¯s a guy in the Midwest or central region who installs them. He¡¯s a farmer and pretty handy with any kind of equipment. John Pfeil knows him and could probaby connect you.
Good luck
Rosemary?

Before I had lift assist installed and when my springs were shot I used a 2-in1 Cargo/Freight Bar from Harbor Freight.? It has a 3x5 flat pad on the end.? I would stand inside and push against the ceiling to o raise into place. Hopefully I wasn't doing any damage

what is "lift assist"??? I definitely need some!
thanks.

The ¡°lift assist¡± is two poles that can be used to lift the roof and after you¡¯re set up, they lock the roof panels in place for extra security. For a smaller model they make it a cinch for even a short person to get the roof up. For the Expedition with the off-road package a tall person can do it alone from the outside, but any two people can do it from outside.

?I raise my roof by myself from the inside by using the door-side pole to prop the roof then going inside and using a sponge mop to open it the rest of the way as I described in a?previous email. Can¡¯t imagine how I¡¯d manage without the ¡°lift assist¡± poles. Well, except that I covet the new push button hydraulic lift :-)

Wind lift assist kits re available from Aliner parts. ?Expensive but worth it. I had local shop install them.

This guy has added an improvement to the kit and you can see it in action:

we have the "Wind assist lift" pole only on one side.? Aliner would not sell me just one; said there wasn't room for one on the other side because of the holding tank vent--actually there is room. Aliner said? "there was nothing they could do for me"? I'm literally not a happy camper.

I do like the extended pole shown in the video, WW.?? He's raising it from one side, and I'm not sure I can do that, but I'll try.
More interested in the "push button hydraulic lift"--is that for real?

Thank everyone so much for all the great ideas for making it possible for me to raise my Aliner by myself.? I plan to try out several of the ideas and see which one works best for me.

Thank you again.
