Re: is there a good Instructional on how to replace springs with gas struts for lifting roof?

Brian - Thanks for the time in putting together that extensive write up. Before you posted that link, I already found that article perhaps 2 weeks ago and found it very thorough. I appreciate so much time and explanation that went into the piece. In the idea of replacing the springs, I still think that eventually my walls will fail and i'd rather beat them to the punch. I store my Aliner opened up, which should eliminate alot of the pressure the walls would have applied if it was stored down, which hopefully will extent the time until the walls blowout. I don't have any difficulty opening the roof and lifting the roof panels at this point - I'm tall enough where getting them fully open isn't a challenge. I think when i do replace the springs, I'll add some additional support for the struts somewhere on the sidewalls. it seems like adding a diagonal beam from the frame to the corner (or something like this) for the strut to mount to would be a good idea to prevent introduction of more issues or just moving the blowout place from the corners to the sides LOL. I've got some time to think about stuff and the trailer certainly is holding up well and functioning great for us at the moment. I appreciate all the responses that everyone has provided.

Hi M.F.

I use these exercise steps around my train layout. I found my at Goodwill for a few bucks. Most have adjustments for height, might be useful on a hill side.

The warnings for methyl hydrate:

Toxic if inhaled. Causes serious eye damage. Causes damage to organs (kidney, liver, eyes, and central nervous system) via inhalation, ingestion, and adsorption through skin. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources

The warnings for acetone:

Breathing moderate to high amounts of acetone for a short amount of time can irritate your nose, throat, lungs and eyes. It can also cause headaches, dizziness, confusion, a faster pulse, nausea, vomiting, effects on the blood, passing out and possible coma, and a shorter menstrual cycle in women.

I'd stick to the acetone.? It removes adhesive very well.? The warnings for methyl hydrate are scary, even if you do use protective clothing.? But you should still use heavy dishwashing gloves when using acetone.? The thin disposable gloves break up pretty quick.

The really old (2005?) Aliners had a paint on them that washed off with acetone.? The newer ones hold up to acetone well.? But test on a small patch before you start wiping on large quantities of solvent.

If you're removing weatherstripping that has an adhesive backing, be aware that the adhesive is actually a layer of two sided tape.? To remove it, you have to peel up the edge of the tape with a razorblade, then slowly pull it off, pulling gently so you don't break the tape.? The older the adhesive is, the harder it is to peel up before the tape breaks and you have to start over.

If you get the tape off, the sticky residue left over cleans off fairly easily with acetone.? If you don't get the tape off, the plastic of the tape does not dissolve with acetone and the adhesive just won't come off.

Alcohol doesn't remove adhesive very well and I wouldn't recommend using it.

Applying heat can helps as well.

Marika,

I thought I was familiar with everything that was a cleaner, thinner, stripper, etc.? But this is a new one to me.? I always start with the least volatile, alcohol or mineral spirits.? When all else fails, I use xylene, with all appropriate precautions.??

Hello Marika:

I like Goo-Gone and a putty knife. Even better is the scraper in an oscillating tool, these take gunk off like butter with a hot knife.

I think Goo-Gone is a oil / citrus based solvent and hasn't etched anything plastic I've used it on.

Hello Bill:

I'm not familiar with your faucet. Potential causes: 1) The faucet is damaged and needs repair / replacement. 2) The seals dried out in storage and shrunk until they leaked, if this is the case the leaks might seal them selves with time.

Do you know the brand / manufacturer of the faucet? They might have a rebuild kit.

The kit and time might be more trouble than just replacing the faucet. You might check marine supply stores, expensive boats often have better quality fittings, they are always more expensive!

Re: How to fix leaking sink faucet in ALiner

No pic came across or link, but I think I know the type of faucet your referring too.? My aliner came with the kind of faucet that doesn't swivel. The faucet I referenced was the same model that was in my 2016 scout minus the electric switch (just don't use the switch part).

There are several articles on this subject.? I was asked to write a how-to article and agreed if the request person would proof read it until it was clear and easy to understand.? It is in the group files at:
