Re: Frame Stiffening Latches

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

?

Hi Don:

?

The roof latch system relies on the massive aluminum roof side extrusions to carry loads across the lower door opening.? The presence of a dormer in the roof panel would have no bearing on the load geometry when the latches are in place.? What could have an impact, however, is the vertical displacement of the dormer assembly mounted in the roof panel during towing over rough roads.

?

My off-the-cuff fix would be to rivet in a triangular aluminum 45 degree corner joint reinforcement in each corner of the rear roof half, so it would resist vertical roof panel deflection caused by the relatively loose load of the dormer assembly. The dimensions of these joint reinforcements might be 8¡± on a side, or similar dimension so that the hypotenuse of the reinforcement is near, or better yet attached, to the dormer frame.? This isn¡¯t a sure fix, because the loads on the roof assembly are vertical, and the reinforcement is in a horizontal plane, but it ought to help.

?

?

I had installed a latching system soon after reading about them.? Along with a cable wind restraint.? I have a rear hard dormer.? Some time ago, I noticed the lower right corner of the main roof developing a crack through the plywood and the vinyl.? I couldn't quite come up with a cause.? Yesterday as we set up the camper I see that it has started in the other corners of the roof opening.? It occurred to me that due to the large opening for the dormer and the narrow remaining roof area, the stress from latching the roofs together is causing this failure.? Anyone else experience this???

Re: Frame Stiffening Latches

Mine is a 2009 Classic.? I can see the plywood at the latches.? ?I sign of stress outside at all.? But there isn't much material in the corners inside.??

Re: Frame Stiffening Latches

Is the metal roof edge cracked at the corner?.? I'd think that would have to break before the roof itself could incur any stress.

I'm also curious how your roof was built.? I don't have any plywood or vinyl as part of my roof panel.??Can you post a picture?

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

If you have weatherstripping that is in good condition, but has just come loose, Permatex weatherstripping adhesive is the way to go.??

Some of the weatherstripping that gets pulled by roof panel movement always comes off on my trailer, and I reglue it on with permatex.

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

You could try some double sided carpet tape.? It's pretty good stuff.

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

I'm hoping with a heat gun I'll be able to get the adhesive strip along with the actual weatherstrip material. Too bad I can't just reuse the old stuff- it's in perfect condition. My next trip isn't for six weeks so I have plenty of time.?

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

The adhesive is really two sided sticky tape.? When you peel the weatherstripping off, try and lift off the adhesive tape with the weatherstripping.? Pull real slow.? If the tape comes off, it takes most of the glue with it, and a couple more wipes with solvent and you're done.? If the tape doesn't come off, and you just pull off the foam, the backbone of the tape is plastic, and solvents won't remove it very easily, and getting it off is a bitch.

Xylene is really super nasty stuff.? I use acetone.? That's just ordinary nasty.? :-)?

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

I have found that xylene cuts through adhesive like magic.? It is rather toxic, so you have to use with care.

Thanks Carl- I'm going to try that!

Hi Eric:

I find a scraper blade in a oscillating tool to be great removing tape goo.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll be ordering a piece from McMaster-Carr. Hopefully a heat gun and scraper with a little Goo Gone will be enough to get the old adhesive off- it hasn't been on long enough to harden badly.

What do you mean by "no response"?? Did you call them on the phone?? If so, what did they say?

Has Anyone Had Success in Getting a New Rood Panel Recently?

M

Hi all! First post! I need a new roof panel for a 2007 Expedition, but I'm wondering if anyone has had recent success in getting a new one from Aliner or a distributor. I've tried for weeks to get a response from Aliner, but nothing yet. Or, if someone's gone a different route and bought a blank panel from some other RV supplier.

Thanks!

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

Mcmaster Cart sells good quality weatherstripping.? Get it from them, and get stuff that is outdoor rated..? I got some stuff from Amazon for lots cheaper and its disintegrating after one year.

You'll notice that mcmaster carr has an option for a name brand adhesive on the weatherstripping for like 40 cents a foot more, or something like that.? Get the name brand stuff.? Its worth it.

A lot of people get surprised that RVs have lower quality than say cars or houses or computers.? But there's not enough pressure for quality in the rv market to even generate a well known quality rating on various rv models.? You can debate why that happens, but the bottom line is be prepared to fix stuff.??

Hello Eric:

I replace all our weatherstripping on our 2000 Aliner. I did the walls with them folded down. It was easy. Plus I added 25cm wings to all the corners. Now we only leak when we drive in the rain. The joints are not sealed when the walls and roof are down. Might be a good reason to store with the roof up??

My 2022 Scout Lite started leaking the last time we had it out camping during a hard rain. It had not leaked previously in hard rain. Rain was dripping off the coil of the door-side rear spring inside the camper. Fortunately I caught it after just a few minutes, in part because I saw warnings on this forum about checking for corner leaks (thank you!).
?
Upon looking for the cause, I saw that the D-profile weatherstripping on the right rear roof section (that the A-wall presses against for a seal when unfolded) was glued on crooked, so that by the time it reached the corner there was a 1" long triangular gap into which water was pouring as it dripped down the outside.?
?
Ignoring the poor workmanship for a moment, what bothers me more is that the factory clearly recognized it was incorrectly attached, and their fix was to shoot a bit of silicone caulk into the gap instead of repositioning it. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, or worked at all, considering the wall and roof are constantly being put together and taken apart. It is 16 months since I purchased it, and although they have nothing about warranty length in any documentation, I believe from other sources that it is only 1 year.

The weatherstripping goes tightly underneath the straight part of the spring, so it will be tricky to remove and replace. Anyone done this repair before, and if so, what worked for you? Where did you get a replacement piece (I don't want the whole kit from Aliner). It appears to be 1" wide by 3/4" high.

In the outside close up photo, you can see the light colored caulk, which is not present on the other side. Just above that, part of the caulk fell off, leaving the gap.

Re: 2022 Aliner Scout Lite already leaking

you should be able to find adequate D shape weatherstripping at McMaster-Carr. I repaired the ones for my door. Large choice available. choose the type with strong adhesive if available.

New A-Frame Facebook Group (A-Liners Out West)

I created a new to promote discussions and meetups for A-Frame/A-Liner owners, or wannabe owners on the western side of the country.? Of course everyone is welcome to join.? You can find the new group at??- hopefully it's okay to post this here.

This is what I added ( a door) and I can watch as I fill the tank. Most of the time I do not want to fill all 15 gal.
Also I like the access.
