New Member - Question on forming curves
3
I'm a beginer with my lathe. I have been practicing facing, turning and boring with good results. My question is, how do you create a cure on a work piece. I want to make dies for an air planishing hammer. The radius would be cut on the face side. That is, instead of creating a flat face, which I can now do, how do I create a small dome on the end. I want to create domes that are almost flat to moderately curved. Any tips and advice are greatly appreciated. thanks, Ed

Compund Slide Slop
4
Hello everybody, I'm another lucky person who got a mini-lathe for Christmas and I'm having a great time with it. I'm new to metal turning but I've been to both Mini-Lathe.Com and The Little Machine Shop sites and would like to thank both for the info. I've been "dailing" the machine in acording to book and the other info, but have a question. The compound feed has about .004 slop in the in and out feed. Is there a way to adjust, or shim this out? My second question is while adjusting the cross slide feed (three allens) I'm able to take all the slop out when is all the way out, but when I move it "in" it picks up some (about .002) slop. I've played around with the allens, but when I move the cross slide back out it gets really tight. I've only adjusted (not lapped the jibs). Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks for the help. Tom Vincent

Boring Lathe Chuck

Is there a way to bore (ream) the stock lathe chuck out so it will pass larger stock? If not what are the recommendations for an after market chuck. I would like to be able to pass at least 7/8" stock thru. Thanks for the help, Tom V

new member...new lathe...& questions
Hi all!, I'm new to lathes and new to the list. My name is Matt and I live in NC.I whined about wanting a lathe until my wife bought one for a christmas present when Homier came to town. I now am the happy owner of a Speedway Series 03911 7x12 :-) I had a ball doing all the cleaning and wiping the first day, and just had to turn sumthin'...I rounded the hex head of a bolt.:-) Now for the question....When changing gears for cutting threads, is the "A" gear the one riding inside the metal bracket on top?-the book wasn't real clear on this. Thanks again..Matt,kf4zgz

Harbor Freight QCTP
Hi! I've just joined the group (' just got my 7x12 as a birthday present), and I am looking for comments on the Harbor Freight quick change tool post sets such as SKU 35140 and 45439. At $80, they seem like a good deal... Thanks, Danny

Chucking medium diameter tube in Mini lathe
7
Hi, I have come across a problem. What is the best way to put a 2"x 8" Brass tube in the mini-lathe. I find that using neither the 4-Jaw nor the 3-Jaw allows it to grip sufficiently. It seems to be a sort of 'Blind Spot'. I want to machine both ends but to make a mandrel that size seems a bit OTT. Any ideas? Regards Ken

US/UK prices making a living, now Chester UK
I have bought several machines from Chester, David and also found the machines as supplied were useless. They all needed stripping and rebuilding. The service from Chester was abysmal. They are just box shifters, like Warco. The Cobra is not identical to the Taig/Peatol. BR Mike Ousby, in Blackburn not far from either Keighley or Bolton

US/UK prices & Re: speed way 7X12

Hi, If you want to know how lucky you guys in the US are, with your $300 prices, the 'most - sold' version of the Mini Lathe in the UK is the Clarke CL300M and it costs ?683 but Machine Mart sells it for a low <quote>Amazing Value</unguote> of ?469.94. Remember that is POUNDS Sterling or $1.50 for each pound. $300 is only ?200!!! They all buy them from the same factory in China too. I recently wanted to buy a part from the States which you can't get here. It would cost $129 for you. I would have to pay a further $56 Postage and then Import duty, VAT (Common Market tax) and a handling fee for paying the Customs, making a total of $244! The first time I went to the US (1952) we were getting $2.80 to the ?1 Pound - how times change. Enjoy it while you can... US/UK prices making a living
3
Hi As another citizen of the UK considering the purchase of a mini-lathe I was interested in the price comparison. Now Chester UK advertise the machine at 340 GBP ex-VAT so the US equivalent, before local sales tax, is around 540 USD. By the way this does include delivery with the UK. There are any number of reasons for the UK/US price differentials, including: Bulk buying - the US market is 4 to 5 times bigger. Property is relatively cheaper in the US so company overheads are lower. Similarly for some labour costs, usually the ones the employer pays. But remember, at the end of the day the price a company sells at is the price it believes it can extract from the customer. Also, there needs to be plenty of competing products. To the best of my knowledge, in the UK the source of cheap lathes is limited. In the US there may be others. Right, now the economic lesson is over the actual lathes actually seem reasonable. So a question, does anyone use one as a production machine as part of making their living?

speed way 7X12

Hi again I found an auction on ebay for the 7X12 mini bench lathe made by speed way. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&item=3102472367&category=25288 Is tis a good choice at only 300.00 dolars I am not sure and would hate to buy it and have to buy another 6 months later cause it wont do all the things I want. basically I want the lathe to do all the things a large lathe can just on a smaller scale. turning theads on the outside as well as on the inside of a piece. shapeing and cutting. any input you can give as to the suitability of this unit would be greatly appreciated. thanks Lokinb

Hello to all. I Just joined the group and am looking for advice on which mini Lathe and mill to buy. I have been looking around and the prices seem about the same for most of them. I like the Micro mark 7X14 but I use metric allot and would prefer one with millimeter knobs on it. Am looking to get the lathe first and then the mill. Will be useing them for model making and for parts replacement on the instuments I work on for a living.. any advice you can give me would be great. thanks in advance for your input. Lokinb
