Grizzly is doing better - I hope!!!
Today, I just received the annual catalog from Grizzly by mail. It is very thick compared to what they sent me last year which was relatively thin with maybe just under 50 or 100 pages, not sure. This time it is a full 500 pages. I see it as an indication that Grizzly is doing well. I feel good about it. I want US businesses to do well..? Just expressing my personal feelings,? I agree, they don't but they are keeping a few hundred(?) people employed and a few thousand hobbyists like us busy. There aren't any US machine-tool makers that make low-cost machines. Any such US-made machine would cost 10 times and none of us would buy it. These are the realities.?

For a while Grizzly was selling off South Bend lathes assembled from leftover stock. But $26,000 for a "New"SB was a bit much!? ?Bill On Sat, Dec 30, 2023 at 8:00?AM davesmith1800 <davesmith1@...> wrote: I have never purchased from Grizzly? |
I have made purchases from Grizzly.? ?Unfortunately, due to being typical imports, with poor results (as discussed in another topic).? ?But they did take both of the defective lathes back.? ?Large companies like Grizzly can do this due to their size.? ?But my issue with the state of things is, the retail vendor simply puts these events in the loss column and move on.? ?What should happen is these vendors should insist and demand better products and better QC from the manufacturers.? ?A most unlikely situation since we buy and accept the products.

Insist on all that and watch the prices rise enough to not make the hobby hobby friendly. george

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýLone Tree¡You ask what would happen if QC was improved¡easy response... The cost would go up as would the quality(hopefully)..those costs would most likely be passed straight through to the consumer! Reuben

OK, let's be clear.? ?These 7x lathes have a very wide price spread, with no discernible difference in quality except to a lucky few that received a really good one, or alternatively meets their particular accuracy requirements.? ? Even the brushless motor, initially only seen on LMS and MM lathes, is available from lower priced vendors on amazon and ebay.? ?Any price variation is only at the discretion and desired profit of vendors. |
When first look at mini lathes about 20 years ago the was about $250 to $500
They look good for little projects.?? I switch to mini lathe for size and weight.? I did find the lathe was? good with few miner fixes. The biggest wast a good tool post.? As far as Grizzly does they make a nice lathe with price to match. I typically can find a better price from Amazon,? Harbor Freight,? Walmart and Ebay. But know looking what for Grizzly take gust work out . Dave |
The 25% coupon has exclusions:
"Coupon cannot be used with any of the following: <snip> Central Machinery, <snip> compressors, power stations, jacks, miter saws, safes, storage
cabinets, carts, chests, or welders." And that lathe is a "CENTRAL MACHINERY 7 in. x 12 in. Precision Benchtop Mini Lathe" Always check the fine print, HF doesn't have coupons like they used to... Why do I know this? I was going to pick up another magnetic pickup tool which is all of $13.99 and it is Central Machinery so no coupon for me... The current coupons and the exceptions is one reason I no longer really pay attention to them. Also the reason my buying from hf has come to a near stop. Once in awhile but not as before. The most thing I buy is their cheap tarps. But yea, the coupons and such are not as they used to be. Sad. george

On this group (and/or the group that preceded it) I recall at least once somebody saying a store was willing to honor the 25% coupon even though it was an "excluded" item. I also recall something like a Harbor Freight physical store will honor an online price that is lower than the store price if you bring a copy of it with you. It couldn't hurt to ask, I guess.
