US/UK prices & Re: speed way 7X12

Capt Ken Appleby <[email protected]>

Hi,
If you want to know how lucky you guys in the US are, with your $300
prices, the 'most - sold' version of the Mini Lathe in the UK is the
Clarke CL300M and it costs ?683 but Machine Mart sells it for a low
<quote>Amazing Value</unguote> of ?469.94. Remember that is POUNDS
Sterling or $1.50 for each pound.

$300 is only ?200!!! They all buy them from the same factory in China
too.

I recently wanted to buy a part from the States which you can't get
here. It would cost $129 for you. I would have to pay a further $56
Postage and then Import duty, VAT (Common Market tax) and a handling
fee for paying the Customs, making a total of $244!

The first time I went to the US (1952) we were getting $2.80 to the
?1 Pound - how times change. Enjoy it while you can...
Regards
Ken

First let me say thank you for all of your input..
Now I have just one more question for you all. at least one more
till
I actually get my Lathe.

If money was not a big deal, what mini lathe would you most like to
own? and why?

ok two questions.

I dont mean to be a pest or to monopolize the conversation, I just
like to be sure before I buy a tool that I am going to get the most
use out of it I can...

Thank you for your patience and advice, they are both apprieciated.

Hi again

I found an auction on ebay for the 7X12 mini bench lathe made by
speed way.

ViewItem&item=3102472367&category=25288

Is tis a good choice at only 300.00 dolars I am not sure and
would
hate to buy it and have to buy another 6 months later cause it
wont
do all the things I want.

basically I want the lathe to do all the things a large lathe
can
just on a smaller scale.

turning theads on the outside as well as on the inside of a
piece.
shapeing and cutting.

any input you can give as to the suitability of this unit would
be
greatly appreciated.

thanks
Lokinb
