Ralph,
.
Lots of 8" lathes are 7" lathes with a 1/2 inch rise on the spindle axis.?
I'm working on 1/2" risers, maybe even 1" risers to get to 9", but it really wont be a 9" in strength and rigidity.
the 7" weighs about 90lbs/110 crated(LMS),??
the 8" on eBay weighs 168 crated and?
the 9" grizzly weighs 294 crated, 10" Grizzly weighs 432.
That weight is a massive improvement in performance/results.
.
If you want a 'BETTER" lathe, you should consider a 9" or 10" ENCO or Grizzly or Precision Matthews
It will still need some massaging similar to the 7x
.
Those other lathes will get 3x - 4x more iron and increased rigidity, the 8" would only be 10% better than the 7". my opinion.
Maybe you can fix this one for free, $50, $100?
.
Good luck on your choices! If you go that way...
Plus you would no longer be in the 7x club.

I have the motor off the lathe and have cleaned up the comutator, which I have a bunch of question.

But thought I show the brush holder first.

As you can see the brush holder has gotten hot and is now missaligned.

Possible I can make up a wood stick the size of the brush and heat the brush holder up realign every thing.

If I had the time mounting one of my Consew 3/4 hp motors would not be that difficult.

Or I could just buy a new lathe, I am thinking about moving up to 8 x 16.

Thanks for the replies.

Ralph
