Upgrading the group, or... - Was: Re: Uploading Photos and Files to [email protected].

开云体育

Bill in OKC,

I did have another individual step up and I’ve elevated him to Moderator. His name is Mike and I’ll let him chime in if he chooses to do so. Are you interested in becoming a Moderator? If so, let me know. In the meantime, I poked around a bit (dangerous thing to do, at least for me) and discovered that there was no restriction on the size of photos that could be uploaded. I took the liberty of setting a 1024 x 1024 size temporarily. We still need to address the elephant in the room, namely, do we need to poll the members (over 4,000) to see if enough donations can be collected to cover the $220.00 fee to upgrade the group or do we want it to remain “free”? If the group wishes to remain “free”, there’s going to have to be some serious “weeding” to do to the photos section, to reduce the size. I’m open to suggestions or solutions.

Joe, My experience has been that it doesn't hurt to have more than one moderator so long as the rules are fairly simple. We can cover for one another when unexpected events happen, among other things. Group owner needs to set the rules, such as they are, and let them be known. I'm willing if you need or want the help. I own a couple of groups, and moderate on a couple more, mostly metalworking, or metalworking related. I prefer to keep the discussion mostly metalworking related (or 3D printing, on a group where that's part of the focus). I try to keep the politics pretty light, though I'm not perfect at that myself, and mostly go for polite, and helpful. Ain't perfect at that, either, unfortunately, but I try. I am retired, 65yo, getting to be kind of fat. I'm not a machinist, but I am taking a class. Have been for over 5? years, very part-time. I have been doing metalworking of one sort and another for at least 55? years. My GI Joe had a steel sword, spear & arrow points on his weapons, among other things. I've done a bit of jewelry work, some armouring, including wearing it to fight with sword and shield, a tiny bit of amateur gunsmithing, and I've made and modified tools and toys, and such like. When it comes to wood, I'm more a wood butcher than anything else. A bit of computer & electronics work and play, and been some sort of maintenance mechanic for about a quarter of my adult life. High-performance fighter jets, automobiles, and industrial laundry equipment, among other things. I read a lot, and remember at least some of what I read, and my google-fu is fair to middling, so I can even find the info again sometimes.?

is membership in this group worth 5 bucks a year to you? i would
give that.

Ned on the smithy group had the same problem and he took
donations into his paypal account marked as gifts.

i don't participate in this group much, im more of a lurker.. i read
and use what i find if i can. but its worth it to me.

five bucks a year isnt much to access the expertise and
experience of others.

Can this be set up as a two tier group? You'd have your "free" section that has valuable information but limited. Just enough to keep you wanting more. The paid section gives members full access to files, photos, etc.

And please include a way for us non-paypal folks to contribute our share.

From reading the owners manual a two tiered group is not possible.?

If this group was created before 1-15-20, subgroups would be the way to go. Each one would have 1 gig of storage.?

Im not opposed to the upgrade as the cost is like 50 cents a year. But managing the collection sounds like a big task.?

Just in case the Poll email doesn't display to everyone, I've asked everyone who participates in the group to take the poll. So far, only 32 people have done so. That is less than 1% of the members registered. I've also set the size of photos that can be uploaded or attached to be resized to 1024x1024 pixels. That is probably not going to be very satisfactory for my crappy old eyes, anymore. Especially on my phone. I hope it helps the rest of you.

Bill in OKC

I can’t find where I received a poll but I will place my vote as “ I’m a lurker but I will contribute “, a reasonable amount.?

I don’t see the poll either, I see poll in the menu but that is to create a new poll.?

I will contribute a reasonable amount too. ?What cost are you looking at?

I owned several yahoo groups with thousands of members and feel your pain on getting participation. ?I think a lot of people are like me and take daily digests and scan them for only topics that interest them. I think a lot of others use the groups more as a reference library and only go to it periodically for help and never would be aware of a poll or the fact the group needs money to operate. Everyone is hooked on free internet resources. ?I’ve noticed Wikipedia is also soliciting funding.?

It sent out a message about the poll with a link to the poll a couple days ago, and you can look at the messages on the group site, and click on the first message, which also has the link.

I havent seen the poll either, but willing to contribute. It seems, with 4000 members at even $1 each we could prepay for many, many years

You have to select the poll from the blue box at the top.?

prepayment is not an option, the cost will go up over time. Last year it started at 110, then went up as io got really busy.?

I’ll contribute, but couldn’t find the poll.

It's currently $200/year, or $20/month (comes to $240/year). Things like that happen when you suddenly need a bunch of server space, as Mark did when a bunch of folks decide they all need to move at once.

I've just this evening read the following from a member of another non IO group, about the IO group he manages. It appears it would behove us to move quickly!
I've copied this from a post by Russell C on the model engine group. This is presented as a communication from

For groups upgraded after Monday, January 18th, 2021 at 9am Pacific Time, the pricing plans will be based on the number of members in the group. The base costs of the different existing plans are not changing. The change is that above a certain number of members, the per member pricing kicks in. Here is the run down:

Free
Up to 100 members
1GB storage
Single mailing list only

Premium
Starting at $20/month or $220/year
Up to 400 members, then $0.05/member/month or $0.55/member/year for each member above that
30GB storage
Subgroups
Collaboration Suite
Donations
Direct Add

Enterprise
Starting at $200/month or $2200/year
Up to 1000 members, then $0.20/member/month or $2.20/member/year for each member above that
1TB storage
Enterprise features

Notes:

These changes only apply to groups upgraded after January 18th, 2021 at 9am Pacific Time; existing premium and enterprise groups will keep their legacy pricing. If a premium group opts to downgrade and then upgrades at some point in the future, they will be subject to the new pricing changes.
The non-profit Enterprise discount will continue; $100/month or $1100/year, with the per member pricing being either $0.10/member/month or $1.10/member/year.
The plan price is calculated using the member count at the time of invoice, either monthly or yearly. For this calculation, a member is defined as a confirmed, non-pending, non-banned member of your main group.
Premium groups will now have 30GB storage. Existing premium groups will get this storage bump as well.
The 100 member limit for free groups only applies to groups that are created after January 18th, 2021 at 9am Pacific Time. Existing free groups will be unchanged.
If a group created after January 18th, 2021 at 9am Pacific Time upgrades to premium, gains more than 100 members, and then later downgrades back to free, the group will be locked until the member list is reduced to 100 members.
Some very large groups recently transferred from Yahoo to us. I requested that they sign up for the existing Enterprise plan. If any additional very large groups transfer over before January 18th, 2021, I reserve the right to also ask that they sign up for the existing Enterprise plan.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Mark

Well, I stand corrected WRT the Member Count paragraph in my previous.? Looks like the safest thing for us to do is to upgrade to Premium by the end of the year.? If I am reading it correctly.
