Re: Ultimate Vice?

I emailed the owner of this group with the link to Groups.IO telling him that Yahoo groups have many glitches. Files go missing and photos go missing.

I use to have about 35 yahoo groups and many where the files have gone missing and photos gone missing. I created about 18 IO groups to take the place of Yahoo groups. IO Techs copied what info thay could over to the new groups.

I offered my help but I did not get a reply from the owner.

Hopefully the great info here will not be lost because Yahoo left the group owners high and dry as well as the members.

Yahoo is having many problems. One of them is attachments not showing up on the message board.

Yahoo stopped their customer support for these groups.

? Crap , they snipped my reply . I said to check out groups.io , at least one of the email lists I read has already gone over there .

Nice John!

?

I built some levers for some machines to operate the TPS in the same way. First one I did, I used a slitting saw in the mill to cut the slot. That was slow¡..and that degree of precision is not really necessary.

?

So I made a set up like yours. When I made a few more, I tac-welded the spacers onto one of the pieces of flat-bar. ?

?

Sorry¡.I can¡¯t seem to find any pics¡..it was a while ago.

?

Yes¡..I agree¡there is no one ultimate vise. There are several, that must be made to suit the task!

Re: Ultimate Vice?

Bill?sent me his photos as I couldn't see them either.

His ingenious jigs just reinforces the fact that if you can hold it - you can cut it!

I don't believe there is an 'ultimate vice', just a vice set up well for the cut you want to make.

Sure every vice needs some extender jaws, and a fixed jaw on the out-feed table helps,?but they don't need to be fancy to work.

Here's a pic of a standard vice cutting an 1/8" (3mm) slit to make a slotted clamp, something most people use a milling machine with a slitting saw to do - there are?2 cuts less than?0.040" (1mm) apart. The extender jaws?are just 2"x3/8" black MS bar and extend right across the gap, something that Mike Cox's?beautifully designed and made ones can't do. Horses for courses.? - jv?

The vice above by Mike Cox is just fantastic.

Mr. Armstrong,

I'm not able to see your pictures.? Are these in photobucket or some other 3rd party hosting website that requires a membership?

I always like to see what other people are doing with these saws to improve accuracy and productivity.

Thanks,

J

What a sensible idea!

BTW, I keep thinking that "ultimate vice" means something quite different than "ultimate vise."

Here are links to three work-holding and position modifications related to the vise.? The vise itself has not modified because it has never presented a problem to me.? I also have a bolt shortening jig made from a piece of thick angle with various sized threaded holes that can be clamped between the vise jaws (sorry, no picture right now).?

1.????? Fixture plate with threaded holes for parts that won?€?t fit well between the vise jaws.???????????

2.????? 90 Degree stop for quick repeatable resets after angle cuts:

3.????? Parallels with a jack screw:

I make fixtures and things as I build things.

For cutting angles, I built a fixture to hold the tubing.
