Any welding forum has a statement that is used all the time.? Cast iron breaks and if welded it will break again.? Build it from iron and go to bed knowing it will work tomorrow!
It sounds like you have a small piece that is broken off and not a major casting failure.? If that is true id fabricate new parts out of steel. ?
I certainly would avoid trying to weld the old cast iron.? The problem here is that castiron can be welded if you have the experience and a quality casting to work with. ? ? The Chinese castings are highly variable in quality.? Beyond that you need to preheat castiron and more importantly burn out the oil in the iron.? Ideally preheat is done in an oven. ??
In a nut shell it just sounds like it will be easier to fabricate a new part out of steel and call it done.? If you have a welder you likely have the materials already to do the job.? I might even consider doing the entire motor mount assembly.? Im not sure what generation saw you have but i suspect the mount acts as a hinge to allow belt tension adjustment. ?
I have a HF style motor mount that has the cast iron plates...I wish I had a picture...may I can send one later.
It appears there is a plate that attaches to the motor, and a plate that attaches to the saw by two large bolts.? Then it appears that are 4 bolts that attach the two plates together.
The plate that attaches to the saw is what broke...and it broke by one of the large bolts.? It cracked and broke apart.
I saw that some similar saws had a different type of mount.? A solid square piece of metal that looks like 1 inch square.? I found a 1 inch by 1 inch square tubing I have we really thick walls.? I also have some thick sheet metal I can weld to the ends of the tubing to create this type of mount.
So far this is the only solution I have.? Does anyone have any
other advice or different solution?? Is this a good solution?? Any advice I should be aware of in regards to this solution?? Can I buy a replacement mount somewhere?
