ZEISS IKON Ideal 111: Help

I just got two older cameras from my father in law. One is a?ZEISS IKON Ideal 111 (6x9) and the other one I still have to figure out. The Zeiss is in pretty good shape and looks like it was hardly used... the other one not so much :(

I would like to get the Zeiss into a state where I can go out and take some pictures.?

Looking at the ground-glass it has some residue and/or artifacts (see link with picture below). I am considering cleaning or replacing it. It seems that by taking off the little screws (on the right side of the picture) the glass should slide out... but it doesn't. I am looking for any help/advice on how to proceed.

Also looking for advice on obtaining a 120 Roll Film Back for this camera (what make/model will fit, good sources (except EBay etc.)

Thanks in advance

Matt

Hi, your Zeiss Ideal 111 is actually a 6.5x9cm film size. It uses a
somewhat uncommon series of holders also used on the Zeiss Juwel--they
"pop off" rather than slide off, unlike most other German plate cameras.

I do not know if a 120 rollfilm holder was ever made for this camera.
eBay currently shows a listing for several glass plate holders for the
Ideal 111, but 6.5x9cm sheet film is quite limited, and you will also need
film sheaths to hold it in the glass plate holders. I think 6.5x9cm sheet
film is still available in Germany, but not the US, as far as I know.
(Freestyle used to carry it.)

You may also find 6.5x9cm film pack holders on the used market. Film
packs are no longer available, but others have repurposed the film pack
holders as ground glass holders. (It MIGHT be possible to adapt one of
the more common 120 rollfilm holders to a film pack holder; I don't know
for sure if this is practical.)

Sorry I can't help with the ground glass problem. --Leigh.

PS: I like using these old cameras, and most are still fairly inexpensive.
I'd suggest instead looking for a 6.5x9cm Kodak/Nagel Recomar,
Voigtlander Avus or Ica/Zeiss Maximar they , as all use the same fairly
common holders, including for 120 rollfilm. All three were also available
in 9x12cm size, and 120 rollfilm holders are also fairly common for the
larger size.

These older 120 rollfilm holders don't have the best film support, so
results may not be quite as good as a more modern rollfilm camera

Leigh, thank you for taking the time to educate me. You are correct about the film size (it is 6.5x9) and the "pop off" mechanism.

I found 6.5x9cm sheet film online (in Germany). Still have to find the glass plate holders you mentioned on Ebay, can't hurt to get some. Am I correct that the purpose of film sheaths is to 'replace' the glass plate? Filling the space between the film and the back of the holder to support the sheet film? That could be easily manufactured with some sort of plastic sheet?

I also have to figure out how accurate the Compur shutter mechanism still is to see whether the camera can still be used.

Regarding the glass... yesterday I took the camera outside (bright day) and it was not so bad after all. If I can't figure out how to remove the glass it would not be a show stopper.

Thanks again for your insights.

Matt, I was wrong about the Zeiss Ideal holders I saw yesterday on eBay:
they are actually 9x12cm.

Pacific Rim Camera has a lot of German plate camera gear, but the only
Ideal 6.5x9cm holder listed is for a film pack adapter missing a dark
slide. (But cheap at $15.)

I've read of others improvising film sheaths, but never have tried myself.
My 9x12cm film sheaths are made of light gauge sheet metal and have bent
edges that hold the film in place.

You might ask on the APUG plate camera forum--there are several people
there more knowledgeable than myself.

Compur shutters are great, and are often found in usable condition many
decades after their manufacture. In my experience, if the slow speeds
don't stick open, USUALLY the marked mid-range speeds are accurate enough
for B&W film. The B and T settings do not require you to cock the
shutter.
