Prontor-Matic 500 SL shutter
William B. Lurie
Friends, my Contessamat SBE arrived with the Prontor-Matic
shutter jammed. Nothing simple unjammed it. By rapping the camera in all planes with the heel of my hand, I managed to unjam it part way. The shutter opened when I depressed its button, but closed symmetrically, only part way. I'm ready to try more of the same treatment, plus baking (but no hotter than storing in a closed car). Compur shutters respond to certain solvents but I don't see where to apply any to this one. The same shutter is used on other Zeiss articles of the 'Sixties, and I'm hoping somebody can give me advice on how they overcame similar problems with similar shutters. Bill Lurie |

I have had some success by taking out the front element, applying a few drops of ordinary charcoal starter to the shutter leaves and then working them til they free up. I also use a shop vac to remove the excess fluid. Probably real dangerous using an electric vacuum to suck up lighter fluid, but there you go. Let it dry out in the sun all day, and it will work or it won't. Gene "William B. Lurie" wrote:
