Supporting our Immigrant Neighbors - Options to Expand our Footprint at Metro Caring

开云体育

Sangha,?

We have been volunteering at Metro Caring Food Bank for a number of years now - typically sending a crew of 5-10 volunteers for a noon - 3:30 pm shift in the warehouse and market every other month. ?Last fall - a number of ZCD community members provided surplus fruits and vegetables from their home gardens to add to the food supply at Metro Caring. We intend to continue this practice on a periodic basis this summer and fall.

Since our volunteer shifts are during working hours - it seems worthwhile to explore other opportunities to contribute that could be done on an evening or weekend - if there is an interest in doing so. ?Metro Caring Volunteer Coordinator Aja Ledoux has identified hygiene kits and sack lunches as unmet needs that we could support on a periodic basis. Metro Caring serves about 1,000 clients - who largely come from the Latino community - who are under increasing duress based on the current administration's immigration policies.?

I'm reaching out to gauge everyone's interest in expanding our impact at Metro Caring. ?Do we want to increase our volunteer shifts from every other month to once a month? ?Do we want to continue providing surplus food from our gardens? ?Is there an interest in taking on the hygiene kits or sack lunches on a monthly or quarterly basis? ?Is there an interest in supporting Metro Caring in other ways?

Consistent is the key here. ?It is not so much what we do - but the fact that Metro Caring can count on us to fulfill our commitment(s) that is important.

I'd love to have a small group of folks who are interested in exploring these options and working with me on this. ?You can reach me here on the zcd.io group - email me at dgibson@... or call/text me at 720-671-0960.

David/All? -? ?It is worthwhile to consider different ways of working with Metro Caring. Just a couple?of notes-
for a number of months during the past couple of years, we also had the opportunity to work at Samaritan
House which largely consisted of serving meals in one or two cafeterias at their large shelter downtown. This
offered a bit more personal interaction with homeless clients than many jobs at Metro Caring and was scheduled
in the evening and on weekends which worked for the schedules of certain of our volunteers, but not others.
The 3 and 1/2 hour shifts at Metro Caring are somewhat more physically demanding, but many of our potential
volunteers can handle them. If we covered different shifts and product lines at Metro, like bagged lunches or fresh
vegetables, that could interest more of our folks and their skills. We could increase or vary our Metro shifts for a?
few months on a trial basis if they are amenable.? Gassho,? ? ? ?Bob

Hi David,
I could potentially give a small but steady amount of garden produce from late July through late September possibly into late October depending on weather. ?My difficulty is transportation. ?Making it all the way into Denver regularly is not feasible for me, but if anyone lives in the south east metro area who can go to ZCD regularly I could potentially drive the produce to your house weekly or every other week during that time for a handoff. ?I live a short distance outside of Parker. ?Thanks!
Bill M.

That's great - thanks for your commitment to this. ?Can you share your phone and email so that I can stay in touch with you on the details once we get into the growing season??
