'98 US Ghost - Simple trick to drain the gas tank
Hello All,
?
First post on the Zanelist 开云体育 :)
?
After some investigation it appears that the fuel pump of the Ghost is no longer functional.
The goal now is to empty the tank.
I used a small hand pump to empty 6 liters through the upper hole (tank cap) but there are still 10 liters that are inaccessible with this system.
?
Quick question
Is there a simple trick to drain the gas tank ?
?
Thanks a lot

开云体育I don‘t See why it shouldn‘t be possible to suck everything out via the filler hole. Did that on 750, no issue. You need to make sure the hose is long enough and reaches down to where the pump sits. Good luck!!

Welcome Stephane
?
Draining the tank is always kind of a pain.? There isn't an easy way to drain a non working tank but ithe simplest process I have found is as follows
?
1 - remove seat (2 bolts)
2 - disconnect rear exhaust cannisters/"mufflers" from brackets (4 bolts)
3 - remove rear mudguard/"fender" if you have one
4 - remove black plastic splash tray/battery protector (2 screws, 2 allen head bolts that go into the rear subframe)
5 - disconnect battery and remove
6 - remove rear subframe upper bolts
7 - loosen or remove rear subframe lower bolts
8 - tilt rear subframe back so fuel sensor under the seat tab is accessible
9 - unplug fuel sensor from harness on riders right side and use wrench to unscrew the sensor.? Try to keep the wires from move as you unscrew the bolt, it makes it easier
?
Once you have hole open you can drop a hose straight into the bottom of the tank and suck out all the fuel
?
Note - if you can dig up a boroscop[e/flexible camera you can just feed the line from the main rear pillion gas cap
?
?
Addendum - I wrote a guide about upgrade the battery cables a few years ago, a copy is attached.? It was done a 750 strike so the basic concepts are the same, it might prove help.?

开云体育As you may have to fit new pipes and filter, the other way is to
remove the airbox and injectors and then unscrew the plate - #8 on
the parts diagram - and suck the rest of the fuel out from that
opening. On 03/03/2025 19:14, Martin G via

hi 厂迟é辫丑补苍别,

Since you're going to replace the pump and all fuel lines anyway, why make life so difficult for yourself trying to find 'clever shortcuts'.
It's really not that bad pulling the tank altogether, in fact I'm quite sure it will be the quicker and easier way in the end.

No idea why people keep making such a big issue of it. Dig in and get it over with.
Just remember to lay back the wiring harness so that you can take off the rear subframe and tank without having to undo all connectors from the engine back. That might be a thing the first time, depending on how it was built up before.
