Hi Mike,

The microprocessor must be initialized with a programmer.聽 So you can't plug in a blank microprocessor and install the firmware.

Does the SO2R Box Utility communicate with the SO2R Box?聽 If so, try Reset.聽 This will set the EEPROM values to initial state, which is not always done when the firmware is reloaded.聽 You can also try flashing an older version of the firmware and if that works upgrade back to the newest version.

If all of these fails, I think Dennis, W1UE has some programmed microprocessors.

Flaky SO2R

I recently powered up my trusty old SO2R box. It lite up the TX1 red LED which is normal, but both Green LED's were on !?!

If I flipped the RX selection switch from 1 to 2, the Green LED's both went out, but I heard relays close in some of my gear as if PTT had been asserted.

I tried reloading Firmware. That worked fine but that did not help with the problem.

It appears that the TX and RX LED's are driven off the uP. Can I simply replace it and do a Firmware update using the Pgm Jumper?

All voltages look OK inside

Thanks for the comments...I have 3 boxes, one of them is flakey in that it locks up...I redid the firmware, still flakey...I think I have an extra chip...will try and replace???

Will pop the existing chips out and reseat???

SO2R Box sending at <1 WPM

My trusty old (10+ years?) SO2R box just started sending CW at <1 wpm.聽 No matter what I did with N1MM's or the box's internal speed control, no change in CW speed.聽 There are 3 different DIP ICs of which there are two of two types.聽 I swapped both "pairs" and reseated the single DIP.聽 I then reloaded the firmware and, voila, it's back to working perfectly again!

I guess corrosion had built up on the pins over the years (it is humid in SE Texas) or a nearby lightning surge had scrambled something.聽 Anyway, the bottom line is that if you see this behavior in your trusty SO2R Box, it may not be catastrophic.聽 These things are built like tanks in my experience.

This group is for the YCCC SO2R Box.聽 The SO2R Mini group is SO2RMini.

The SO2R Mini does not speak the OTRSP protocol.聽 On Windows there is a program which communicates via OTRSP and talks to the Mini using the commands which are an extension to the WinKey protocol.

I'm making the move (back) to a linux desktop after many years away. I've got solutions for many of my issues but finding a way to control my SO2R mini is one of the remaining tasks.聽

I've looked at the OTRSP command set and it seems simple enough, but I'm not having any luck getting the commands to the box. If I need to send something like "RX1" to the device, is that expected to be ASCII or Hex encoded?聽

I've attempted to just echo some commands to the serial device with no luck. Bringing up a terminal program attached to the port at n81 9600 baud doesn't do anything either.聽 I know I have the correct port from the output of dmesg and watching the connect/disconnect messages.聽

Any input would be appreciated!聽

My ultimate goal was to get it working with my elgato streamdeck, which should be simple enough if I can figure out this issue.聽

The voltage loss is due to a bad via on the board.聽 You jumpers it the same way that I鈥檝e done it.

The old part number for that IC is a 2502-4.聽 The revised part number is a TLP542 or similar.聽 I鈥檝e used several different ICs of that same numbering range.聽 I can look tomorrow- I may have one in the garage I can send you.

From my good friend WD8DSB:

Today Mike (W9RE) and I did some troubleshooting on a YCCC SO2R box at Mike鈥檚 and found we had lost 5 Vdc on pins 11 and 15 on the MAX9722A but we had 5Vdc on pins 2 and 3. We then did continuity checks and saw something like 3 Meg Ohms between pin 2 and 15 as an example. We decided we must have had a broken trace so we installed a jumper between C104 and C107 pins that normally have 5Vdc to reestablish 5 Vdc on pins 11 and 15 and this fixed the original problem of no audio output.

BTW my box has a white DIP for U3 where my spare (just repaired box) has a black DIP for U3.聽 I am not using Icom rigs right now but should I replace it anyway?聽 If so what part number should I order?

Thanks much.聽 Right now I am not using Icom rigs but I remember that to a slight extent.聽 I tried pushing on the audio IC and no improvement as Paul suggested.聽 Going to set up an audio generator and a scope to try and trace the low audio down.

The original unit used 2502-4 ICs to do the keying and PTT.聽 We replaced it with

a TLP442 or similar to improve keying with Icom rigs.

I may have some in the shack- I'll look later today.

Hi Mike,

There were some units that had bad solder connections on one of the surface mount chips - I think it was the audio amplifier.聽 I would open it up to check.

Before you open the SO2R Box remove the speed pot knob and the nut that holds it to the case.聽 If you don't you will damage the pot.

Once you have it open, connect it up and try it.聽 While you are listening to the audio press on the leads of the audio amplifier (the smaller surface mount chip) with an insulated tool - a toothpick would work.聽 If the audio level changes then you have a bad solder connection.

I obtained聽 a spare (backup) SO2R Box+ and comparing it to my original unit I notice that the audio is say a good 6db lower when listening to radio 1 when plugged into either channel 1 or channel 2.聽 This is only with the radio plugged into either DIN,聽 12Vdc and audio out plugged in and of course flipping the rx switch.

Any things I should check or buy for replacing?聽

Paul was there a chip that was universally replaced in the original buy?聽 I think the vintage of both units is the same.聽 Seems like I remember something about a green or white device that should be replaced (updated)?

Another different problem developed tonight with the SO2R box and wonder if you have any isuggestions or have seen this before.

Computer was set to key at 35 WPM but radio was keyed at about 55 WPM (both radios).聽 Tried rebooting everything with same behavior.聽 So I set the computer to 14 WPM and that was about 34 WPM but the keying was very halting sounding.

I have not reflashed yet.
