Virtual Nor’easter XXV announcement
Announcement:
The Yankee ASL group () announces the virtual Nor’easter XXV tournament! Due to the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic the 25th version of our Nor’easter ASL tournament will be held virtually via VASL. This will be a “live” event on the same weekend as already planned for Nor’easter XXV: March 18th-21st 2021. Full details and descriptions are below.
Description:
The YASL Nor'easter is New England's regional ASL championships. It is normally held annually near Boston, MA. In 2021 it will be held virtually via VASL. It is a yearly get-together of people in the New England area, and now worldwide, that play Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) and Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit (SK). The Nor'easter is hosted and directed by the boys from The Bunker and the Yankee ASL Group.
Since we are virtual this year there are some changes from the usual setup. First, the tournament is 100% free! No hotel means no registration fee! But there will still be prizes for the top 3 finishers in the Main Tournament. As of this writing, we do not have any mini tournaments planned but if that changes we will post an update.
For up to date announcements and friendly banter we recommend you join our mailing list on groups.io either from our main website at or at /g/yasl.
The sign up page and information is always available at
Schedule and Tournament:
Currently we only have the Main Tournament scheduled with Carl Nogueira as the Tournament Director. Being a virtual tournament we expect players from many time zones so our usual round times have changed.
Thursday March 18th is reserved for open gaming. We have a list of recommended Thursday scenarios available for download at . If you are interested in Thursday play, we recommend you join our mailing list (as described above) and request a matchup.
The Main Tournament will be held as follows:
Round 1 Friday March 19 11AM EST-4PM EST
Round 2 Friday March 19 5PM EST-until you finish
Round 3 Saturday March 20 11AM EST-4PM EST
Round 4 Saturday March 20 5PM-until you finish
Round 5 Sunday March 21 11AM EST- until you finish
Full Main Tournament rules are available at . Please note we will post updates on how the rules function in a virtual environment.
As of this writing, we will require players to use VASSAL 3.2.17 running VASL 6.5.1 as that appears to be the most stable version for the most players (). This too may be subject to change as we draw closer to the start date.
The full scenario list has already been published at with scenario downloads. You will see some new YASL scenarios that have not been published yet. Around the same time as Nor’easter XXV we will be releasing the YASL pack 2 with more great scenarios and 3 new boards. Thank your LFT for helping us with this production!
Please head on over and sign up. Check here, on our website or mailing list for more information and updates.
Thank you,

The brewery would work for me and we would not have to pay a hotel to host it.
Maybe a one day event to start? Best done in the better weather months in any event, Vic.

Neo-con? You do have more Old-school AH gamers than you think in the area, but many are not linked up through YASL. They do not play ASL, but do play other old AH games. I can think of two guys who might be very interested in that right of the top of my head and I am sure there are many others.
You would just have to find the right forums to reach out to. They do exist, just have to find them. At least a couple on Facebook. Time it right, and everyone will be so sick of the pandemic that you could have excellent turnout.

What would the expected attendance be for an event like this?
New England AH Con.... NEAHCON?? (knee-con)? :)

If it is anywhere within 2 hours drive from me in Pittsfield (Albany to Worcester) I'll be there for sure.
With the newsletter I have my hands full so can't help administer it but would defiantly attend.
I loved those old Avalon Hill Games and am willing to play many of them.
Bring it on and I'm there, great idea if it comes to fruition, Vic.

I have never done this before.? But, I am interested in working with someone to make it a reality.
I am in Southwestern NH.? About 20 miles from the Greenfield bunker.
Where on the I-91 corridor would you hold it?? Or, we can do it at the Keene Best Western.
Regards,
Cole

I think AHIKS is itself a likely great place to start.
Cole - if you're seriously interested in organizing this I'd be happy to help in the background.? (Lots of irons in the fire otherwise)

Good points!? Certainly something to think about!!
Joe?

Carl?

Joe,
If I could have Chuck and you help me with what I need to do, I am willing to try my hand on it.
Location - I am thinking Keene. But, what if we did something as a private event at the brewery?
Regards,
Cole

D-Day was the first Avalon Hill game I ever played way back in 6th grade in 1966! Gettysburg was the 2nd. Bring it on, Vic.

I would love to see a classic Avalon Hill Tournament at some point with several games offered.
Afrika Korps, Bismarck?and Guadalcanal are just some of the games I'd be willing to play, Vic.

From the comfort of Tewk Manor, Chuck has taken over the match responsibilities for the Avalon Hill group!
Thanks Chuck for doing this.
With him and the new president being from Massachusetts would there be any consideration of a historic Avalon Hill tourney (when meeting in person becomes safe again)?? A full Civilization or Diplomacy game!
Regards,
Cole
