Re: Tournament scenario lists
My very short 2 cents - the scenario list also provides the opportunity to prepare in advance of the?tournament.? I find that if you want to be competitive, running through your choices and playing them, even if only a few turns, really makes a difference.? The prep work also lets you plan what gear, pieces, boards you will need so you can keep your travel kit to?a minimum. -CT

Re: Tournament scenario lists
I've only been to a couple tournaments (and in such a noob capacity that they don't really count as competitive experience), but I've assumed that a curated scenario list is intended to provide some kind of theme and give context to what the competition is testing. Is it about who's best at a particular kind of scenario, a theater of war, a type of victory condition, or an overall versatility of skills? I've also noticed that ASL tournaments don't seem differentiate between whether you play the attacker or defender in any number of rounds -- another difference in skillset (or at least it seems that way to me so far!) |
Re: Tournament scenario lists
I agree with Steve and Mike, you need a well thought out scenario list to give the tourney structure, it is essential the morning/afternoon round ends on time, once you get to the night round and you both agree to go off list, then go for the gusto, just don't go crazy and choose something you will finish at 3AM, makes for a not great day after. Once you are out of the running for first place, I always see if there is something on the list I want to play that round but if not, can do something else if my opponent agrees. Tourneys can't be just about open gaming, too much chaos unless you have a whole week like ASLOK,? Vic.

Hi Kedge,
?
Still being a relative newbie to ASL tournaments, I appreciate having scenario lists, and I like the themes that some of them use. ? I’m not sure where I would start picking my own scenarios, or how matches would work. Also I think it’s good for balance.
?
However, as you suggest, I agree that having the option to go “off the list”, if your opponent agrees, would solve the issue and avoid “fixing something that (IMO) ain’t broke”.

Re: Tournament scenario lists
Hi Kedge, hope you had fun at ASLOK! And thank you for the player feedback.? And for proselytizing for the NorEaster! While unbalanced scenarios and sharking are a concern, to me the bigger concern is keeping everyone on time.? Especially for the morning rounds.? If a long game is picked for the morning round, that could mess up pairings for the afternoon round. With a smaller tourney like ours, with 5 rounds, that's more problematic than the weeklong affair of ASLOK, which has more time for catchup. As a frequent handler of PIS sheets, guys do occasionally go offlist.? Or perhaps play a Round 1 scenario in Round 4.? I don't think our TD will ever disallow that when it was mutually agreed upon. And I know that is much different than the open format, but it is something. -Mike

They preferred more open tournaments, like ASLOK and Winter Offensive.? Which got me thinking. Maybe a defined scenario list is not such a great option.? One concern I foresee is the possibility of someone choosing an unbalanced scenario.? Perhaps there is a solution that lies somewhere in the middle. Rather than have defined scenario choices for each round, we specify a pool of scenarios from which players can choose. We could also allow the option of choosing outside of the pool at the TD's discretion.? Thoughts? Kedge |

Re: Tournament scenario lists
开云体育ASL and SK tournaments are the only game tournaments I’ve ever played (and I’ve played both board and miniatures games in tournaments) where there was a predetermined set of scenarios that must be adhered to (or at least, strongly suggested) and to be honest, I don’t like it at all… it’s never been an actual scenario I would have chosen (except for one a couple years ago). Seems to me, ASLOK and WO have the right idea… just my personal opinion, of course.Emery On Oct 9, 2023, at 5:06 PM, RLJII via groups.io <wintrymix@...> wrote:

Folks, ? ? ? ? ?The Nor'easter will be at the La Quinta Hotel in Springfield MA from 3/14-3/17 for 2024. I am waiting for the sales manager to send a link so you guys can make your own reservations without having to go through the Phone lines. I will post all pertinent information as soon as I have it. It's a good deal for us and we are looking forward to it. It was VERY tough finding a spot after our old digs priced themselves out of consideration. We finally did it though and many thanks to Ralph MacDonald who got this location for us. Once again proving that Ralph is not a YASL HOF member just on his good looks. :-) Thanks Ralph.? ? ? ? ? ?More to come. Carl Nogueira |
