I can see the Russians at least trying to do just that, no problem, just not in ASL, sounds par for the course for a country that bedevils us to this very day...

Re: Tournament scenario lists

Especially after you and your opponent have a loss then it is up to you both to let the tourney director know you are going off list, perfectly fine in later rounds with guys out of the running. Just don't pick the Last Bid or some other monster with just a day left, thinking you'll finish it before the hotel throws you out!

While unbalanced scenarios and sharking are a concern, to me the bigger concern
is keeping everyone on time.? Especially for the morning rounds.? If a long game is
picked for the morning round, that could mess up pairings for the afternoon round.
With a smaller tourney like ours, with 5 rounds, that's more problematic than the
weeklong affair of ASLOK, which has more time for catchup.

As a frequent handler of PIS sheets, guys do occasionally go offlist.? Or perhaps
play a Round 1 scenario in Round 4.? I don't think our TD will ever disallow that
when it was mutually agreed upon.

And I know that is much different than the open format, but it is something.

Which got me thinking. Maybe a defined scenario list is not such a great option.?

One concern I foresee is the possibility of someone choosing an unbalanced scenario.?

Perhaps there is a solution that lies somewhere in the middle. Rather than have defined scenario choices for each round, we specify a pool of scenarios from which players can choose. We could also allow the option of choosing outside of the pool at the TD's discretion.?

Thoughts?

Re: Tournament scenario lists

Carl speaks the truth, ASLOK style is fine for a full week there but regional tourneys do it right for 3 or 4 days together,?
Carl, Chuck and Steve Pleva always have nice lists filled with balanced and fun actions, I'm a big fan of structure, Vic.

Picking imbalanced, too-long or short scenarios is a huge problem with the open format. I was never a fan of what happens at ASLOK all the time. A 4-0 guy gets to play a 6-0 guy, shouldn't happen, but does with no timing, or restraints of any kind. I avoid non-programmed list tourneys for the same reason.?

Some like the structure, some don't. Attendance was not our Achilles heel this year. Finding a hotel that was not insane was. Ralph finally was able to locate a good spot. He and I checked it out, and we are now good to go. We had 50 guys last year, that is not bad. I went through that debate years ago with the usual suspects. Given only three days of actual tourney, this fits our schedule and our clientele well.?

Re: Tournament scenario lists

chnogueira

Hi Other Carl,
? ? ? ? It's mostly a function of the players picking their top three scenarios out of 5 for each round and then choosing a side. The players choose the side they want. If both choose the same side it is resolved by dr with the loser getting the booby prize of the side they didn't want with balance. As mentioned by others previously, if you want to go off list, knock yourself out. However, if the game is unresolved come the start of the next round, you are out of the running for the tournament. If that matters to you, don't go off list. If it doesn't, by all means go off list, enjoy.?
Thanks,
Carl

I've only been to a couple tournaments (and in such a noob capacity that they don't really count as competitive experience), but I've assumed that a curated scenario list is intended to provide some kind of theme and give context to what the competition is testing. Is it about who's best at a particular kind of scenario, a theater of war, a type of victory condition, or an overall versatility of skills?

I've also noticed that ASL tournaments don't seem differentiate between whether you play the attacker or defender in any number of rounds -- another difference in skillset (or at least it seems that way to me so far!)
