Free metal Nose bridges 2
?Didn’t know if you guys were aware of this but several companies who manufacture aluminum products are offering free metal blanks for the nose bridge to anyone making masks and giving them away. They are 3” by .25” wide. I ordered 200 from this place and got them really fast. They are so nice. https://www.isaiahindustries.com/flexible-metal-nose-bridge-face-masks/ Connie

Mask making steps 5
Well no wonder I’m so slow at this. Note: The front of my mask I’m making is 1 1/2”taller than the back to allow for fold over to create a pocket for the nose bridge piece. I often use a different coordinating fabric on back. PREP work: I cut the nose bridge wire to length ahead of time. I cut Filti filters in big batches. I cut interfacing (Pellon 931TD) to size in big batches. I cut the elastic to length in big batches. 1) wash & Dry new fabric 2) iron out the worst wrinkles 3) cut out front (f) and back (b) rectangles of cotton fabric 4) cut interfacing for f & b 5) fuse interfacing to f & b 6) serge along top edge of f & b 7) sew f & b together along top leaving 3” pocket opening. 8) press seam open 9) topstitch on back along top edge 10)fold front to back with right sides together and bottom edges lined up, iron the fold. 11)insert elastic at top of side seam, backtack well, sew 1/4” seam down side to within 1/2” of bottom, insert other end of elastic, backtack 12)repeat step 11 for other side. 13) sew across bottom with 1/4” seam allowance. 14)clip corners 15) turn inside out 16) press all outer edges 17) press creases for pleats 18)fold pleats on both ends using clips to secure 19)press pleats flat from both sides 20) top stitch outer perimeter 1/4” from edge backtacking on pleats for durability and 21)insert nose bridge wire in pocket along top edge as you go enclosing it. 22)include some Filti fabric filters with mask and bag. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a step or two. Lol So, with the Filti filter insert, there are 5 layers and it is still easy to breathe through. Connie

Sewing Needles and storage
?Hi Guys, Thought this might be helpful. I’m including pics of how I store my needles. This was a tip from Janet Pray of Islander Sewing Systems, though she used the large floss box instead of this small one. This fits in my drawer. The last pic is showing the bulk box of 100 Universal needles. Not sure what they cost now, but IIRC, I paid around $25 for the box.

During the lock down 10
We got a text yesterday from Older Son’s ex asking if Oldest Grand (Rowan) could call Daddo (Mark) to interview him for a school project. The interview was What was technology like when you were my age? Wow! There were no calculators, certainly no home computers. They were Facetiming, so I dug around and located an old slide rule (the Boss Technology of the 60s!) It was in sorry shape, but at least he could get an idea of how it looked, if not how it worked. This one was Mark’s. (He was an engineering major before he switched to Comp Sci). I have no idea where mine is (if we even still have it). I was a Math major before I made the switch to GNAS (General Arts and Sciences). Okay, here’s the Mongers Know Everything question of the day (not tech related). The kids’ mother was in the background on the call. She said hello and let them take over (as was appropriate). She looked simply awful. Gaunt, old. I’m tempted to chalk it up to not expecting anyone to see her, but she has depression issues. Should I reach out? We were never really close close, but I am a bit worried. Her mom died a couple of years ago. They were (IMHO) way too close, but I have little experience with mother-daughter relationships as my own mother died when I was 13. Should I reach out to my son and let him deal? His SO is NOT ENGAGED. In fact, there’s an active dislike in both directions. Just saying. The children, on the other hand, seem to be thriving which makes me feel as though I should MMOB. Ann in PA

Filti filter material 45
My filter material arrived last week and I scrounged around and found some fabric scraps and my mother’s old handkerchiefs and made a pocket mask. We just fitted it to DH. The filter fabric goes in the pocket. I’ll make one in my size tomorrow and we’ll try washing and wearing them. Then I’ll make more as long as the fabric holds up. The exterior is leftovers from fabric I made cushions out of years ago for my son’s window seat (the cushions are stil there). And I’m using the handkerchiefs for the lining - I have to starch them to have them hold their shape for cutting and sewing as they are soft cotton. But that will be comfortable against the skin. DH says he can breathe easily with the filter material in place. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Update on Dan 14
Good news - I just talked to my sister in law, and Dan is off the vent. She was able to talk to him - he was hoarse, weak voice, but sitting up. Now the long road to recovery, I think! Thanks for the continued thoughts & prayers! Diane

One more thing on masks 2
I ordered 4 masks on Zazzle right now, $11 a mask to be here by end of April. You can upload your own design or put text on it (and sell it) or buy someone else's. Same price. Just fyi for those who don't have fabric to make masks. I decided to give someone else the money instead of uploading my own image. I assume they get a few cents if their image is used. The regular price is $12.95 but they have coupons. I got the ones applied through Honey (which I highly recommend as an add-on to your browser) -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Mask-Update 27
I'm still making masks and experimenting with different materials. Things I've learned: Online and in my neck of the woods, there is little elastic to be found, but you can cut it lengthwise and that will work. So if you find 2" elastic, cut it down to 1/4 inch. Also, many people are cutting T-shirts to make T-shirt "yarn" and they're using that for ties and replacements for ear elastic. I'm going to experiment with that and I think it might be a very comfortable alternative to elastic. Lastly, I found an excellent filtration material, Filti. It's got the right specs. I'm just not sure about the best way to clean it. I'm sure it will machine wash, but I'd like to be able to machine dry it. I've read that leaving it in the sunshine and setting it aside for a few days would be effective, but I'm not completely comfortable with that. I want to nuke those suckers with a blast of heat from a dryer if I can. I'm getting my Filti within a couple of days. If anyone is interested in my results, let me know. Here is the information about Filti: https://filti.com/#whyFilti Here's one of the sewists I follow, making a Filti mask: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxkCzCqH88A If it launders, I'll be all over this one. I know this post is only obliquely fibery, but forgive me and I promise not to wear it out. Mary.

Fiber and other activity talk 51
I thought we could take our minds off the various issues we have due to social distancing and discuss what we are imagi-knitting, sewing, weaving, spinning, etc. I am starting to get busy with yard work so have less time to do fiber stuff. BUT, we had rain for two days so I wove a couple of scarves. Very easy and I would have done them on the rigid heddle loom but I have lent it to a friend for a class which is now in limbo. So I did it on the floor loom. Interestingly it took a bit longer to warp but a lot less time to weave. So it seems about the same to me for easy weaving. I am not plotting/planning a table runner with my corespun Inglenook batt yarn. That way the whole wonderful color progression will be visible. I've been googling and calculating what I can get in terms of size and what sett to use. I also am planning a silk band to trim a top I am going to make with a hemp/ribbon fabric I've woven. Had to look through patterns and see how wide each one might be and what I wanted the finished look to be. And continuing with the textured yarn spins, I got my fiber out to do spin a thick and thin yarn that might become coils some day. i am also planning a sweater spin with 3 colors of natural blended wools. A grey Corriedale with bits of white. A natural with a brown stripe and a new one I just got which is a white, medium and dark brown roving. i'm hoping I get 3 different tweedy colors which I can use in a stranded sweater. Lots of sampling and knitting of swatches before I start actually spinning for it. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Woo hoo! Go Diane! 13
Diane has a project in the next Handwoven. Such a wonderful project that one of the great weaving teachers (Madelyn Van der Hoogt) also has an article on how to blend drafts like Diane did. Since may of you may not have seen Diane’s post on Ravelry or the article written by the editor as part of the Handwoven newsletter, I thought I’d post the newsletter article here. <https://handwovenmagazine.com/looking-for-variety-blended-drafts-might-be-the-answer/?utm_source=drip&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Weaving+As+Meditation&utm_content=HW+04.09.20+Newsletter> And a related article on the blog (not yet in the newsletter) <https://handwovenmagazine.com/sweet-orange-huck-ready-to-blend/> If the links break let me know and I’ll repost from my laptop where I am better able to post as hyperlinks -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Activities! 2
Diane, you’re a lifesaver with The Sewing Place. I’ve been swearing at the Joann and Hobby Lobby websites, not just over elastic but because they are really badly organized. Sewing Place has elastic and also replacement blades for my rotary cutter, which is crucial not because the blade is dull but because I was panicking about it. My masks are not artworks, but I get more competent as I continue, and that encourages me. It’s always better to be doing, after all. DSon, DDIL and their kids are in the suburbs of Detroit, which is worrying of course. I know that the 2.5 year old twins and a newborn are less statistically vulnerable than, say, their 62-year-old Nana, but logic doesn’t enter into it. But I hear cheerfulness from Peter and the kids, and that gets me past the worst of my anxieties where they’re concerned. The boys are small enough that running around in the yard is enough activity to wear them out. I have a shelter-home sweater going too, the pattern is City Limits which is free on Ravelry. It’s top-down, sweatshirt style, and I’m working the body. Seems like I’m not getting anywhere, which is demonstrably silly. And the yarn is Noro Kibou, a cotton/silk/wool blend that has been sulking in my stash for 5-ish years. It refused to look nice in any of the other projects I tried, so either it surrendered or my standards are different several years in. But either way I’m enjoying the project. That and, thankfully, still having a job to force my attention away from my personal and selfish concerns, give me lots of reasons to be grateful. Lise in NJ

We laugh so we don't cry. Can't go out to shop. 4
So the email ads just get more and more plentiful! Yesterday (in the mail) we received a realtor solicitation (want to sell your home?) in a plain envelope. With one of those return address labels that we all get in the mail. With the name blacked out. The envelope contained photocopies of a multi-list, not even in our zip code with a scribble that said: “I am selling in Maple Springs” (our neighborhood). Oh, and his card. Like I would list (if I were selling) with someone who throws together a package that looks like that! I guess he gets credit for trying. Open house, anyone? Ann in PA

Update 38
With lockdown so common around the world, let's do an update; and I shall start 1st. Much ups and downs right now and over the past block of months. Two weeks ago I broke up with a fellow knitter from England. We met through Ravelry & in Feb 2019, and in Oct, I made the effort of coming over to meet and do stuff. I was mildly aware that things weren't 100% right, and after the Oct trip, I should have up and said that it wasn't working, but this coward & lazy soul did nothing. So he came out to visit in late Feb. We did a yarn mill & shop tour between Sydney & Melbourne and the cracks formed very quickly. In the last week during a day trip to Melbourne that I did lose it & said I was over it all. That night, calmly I was able to say what was obviously not working, without being horrible. We have parted as friends & still correspond daily. Professionally, I have been on a good wave with lots of science stimulus happening. I currently have 8 papers I need to write, or complete, and this is always a good feeling. I'm feeling happily challenged and equally stimulated. But work..... Well, we are going through a restructure that sees my manager lose his position. The euphemism is On the Road to Retirement, but that doesn't mean Mr Passive Aggressive isn't making life unpleasant. A rather ugly email was sent around yesterday, actually directed at me personally, but never actually mentioned, which I shall just ignore. The "silence is a better response" is my mantra right now. Soon, new positions are up for grabs - 3 Directors, 3 Sub-directors, and I have decided to apply. I'm using the adage: not whine about the outcome if you didn't vote. It's all internal, which means no new ideas, and you don't go for a specific position - the successful applicant is allocated (WTF!!). Anyways, depending on how much of a nuisance I am regarded will depend on my success. I shall say I think these positions are Poisoned Challises, so I shall make a final decision of acceptance if/when the time comes. Because of the restructure I have applied elsewhere with no success. The best was an interview at Corvallis, OR at OSU as the curator of the Herbarium. I was honoured as this would have been a highly contested position, but I didn't get into the 2nd round, although there doesn't seem to have been an appointment made either. Not holding my breath. The workload has been tough on a group of us of late - my colleague in Alice Springs is rushing to an early grave doing to executive positions. She knows I will help, so she handballs small bits to me. This is what trusting friends do. The identification side has been relentless of late & it isn't surprising that I have contracted a chest infection from a cold during this recent trip over east. What I AM doing is not coming into work on weekends & resting as much as possible. I stopped dragging work home with me some years ago, so I already don't work from home, and go to bed as soon as fatigue sets in. I am knitting a storm & reading, and following people with their activities - this is what gets me up in the mornings, along with a lovable, but naughty cat. Whether it be light & full of nothings, or full of drama - always interested in Monger's stories. Love to you all Peter

A Dollop of Wisdom and Request for Good Book Recommendations 13
Elizabeth Zimmermann: Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either. Knit on with confidence and hope through all crises. Now, let us all take a deep breath and forge on into the future; knitting at the ready. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Pound to Dollar ration is now $1.16 to 1 pound. I ordered Na Craga in Selkie. I know we're heading into summer. I know wool 12 months a great so it works for me. All of you can be relied upon for the best book recommendations, so let fly with some good ones. I'm finishing up a nine book series by Upton Sinclair. One of the books, Dragon's Teeth won the Pulitzer in 1943. The series is about the devolution into WWII. to read all of the titles has been a long road, but it's been a glorious ride. I'll definitely up for a change of pace when I finish this last one. Mary.
