Peter, This One is For You - Now Catch Up

Hi Jenny.

I am sewing quite a bit.? I've really enjoyed copying garments that I see in a store or own.? It's mentally challenging, involves lots of pattern drafting, and exciting to see how close the clone is to the original.

I'm going to have a granddaughter in November, so I've made baby blankets and some other things for her.

I'm working on a baptismal cloth for a friend who has a grandson with a baptism coming up this month. The family wanted a great grandmother's damask napkin embroidered with a cross and the baby's intials.? I've gotten the cross done thus far.? The digitizer is completing an interlocking two-letter monogram for one of the other free corners.? This is not difficult with the right equipment and is very satisfying to do.

Knitting.? Hmmm.? I am embarrassed to write that I've only been knitting socks.? Endless socks.? Have I "aged" out of knitting sweaters?? I have definitely reached S.A.B.L.E. All of those beautiful colors kitted up for jumpers.
Two UFOs have me stopped in my tracks.

One is Blue Corn Cafe and if anyone has suggestions, I'm open.? I successfully redesigned the body to fit perfectly. body and neck treatment are done and look great. I got off track on the sleeve design, but thankfully I've only done 5 inches or so.? It's just a traditional drop shoulder sleeve.? My mistake is that I calculated the rate of decrease so that when it reaches the the bottom, the ribbing will fit my small wrist.? Dumb move, I think.? This decision makes the rate of decrease once every three rows.? Who has ever heard of that?? I should have stuck with a slower rate and engineered some decreases evenly spaced around before doing the corrugated ribbing.? OK, should I just rip it and recalculate or what?

The other is AS'? Elizabethan Jacket.? I've done the sleeves and misinterpreted the sleeve cap directions.? the last 4" or so need to be frogged and redone.? I know that I should just do it.? Motivate me.

Yesterday,? a friend and I went to our first movie in 18 months.? We went to our tiny one screen threatre to see Roadrunner, the Anthony Bourdain documentary.? It was well done.

After my annual physical this spring, my internist opined that I should be safe at my gym once again.? I've begun going again daily and it's been wonderful to see everyone.? It just makes me feel great to exercise and take these classes.? With the Delta variant, I don't know how much longer I'll be able to indulge in the movies or my gym.? I know all of you have your own frustrations about this, but it just makes me so sad to think I'll have to stop again.? No way I can do those cardio classes with a mask stuck to my face.

That is all I've got right now.? Hope everyone is doing well.? What a crazy world it is.

Mary.

Love your "copy" top!?
Sewing is the "new" knitting ... definitely on a huge uptick with the younger set.
(and small frame loom weaving/macrame is also red hot with creativity right now)?

Are you familiar with ??
It allows you to draft their patterns using YOUR measurements?and they have a sister site for creating from scratch.

Winter in AZ gets shorter and warmer every year ... so I have become more interested in sewing linen than knitting wool - although the wool doilies make great out of doors dream catchers (yard art) ... and if I am lucky I can give them away!

erica - snacking, overeating ideas, and enjoying the company of my neighbors - if only they did not keep aging OUT!

Mary,
You can do half the decreases every 4 rows and the other half every 2 rows to average out to every 3 rows. Depending on your preference decrease ?faster first and then slower after or vice versa.?

I hear your frustration on exercise, Mary. We haven’t gone back to our in-person classes. Our compromise has been that the leader of those same classes holds Zoom workouts 4 times a week for 4 of us who are skittish about resuming. While our own county is deemed “safe”(ish) the next county over where the in-person classes are held is not. It’s a high risk area, and frankly, the other 20 or so people in that class are a-holes about masking. Our kitchen with the Kindle screen suits me just fine! I’ve even resumed wearing a mask at the grocery store (my only, and once a week, outing for the time being). I hate that this whole thing has been politicized to the extent that it has. Don’t get me started.

?

Congratulations on impending grandbaby. Is this the first?

Erica,..

I tried Lekala a few years ago, but didn't have much luck with them.? It may just have been the designs I selected.? It certainly is a great concept, but for me the fit wasn't there.? After trying Lekala, I started studying how to fit myself and must have experimented with every method out there!?

I finally settled on a combination of Nancy Zieman and Sandra Betzina's methods (very straightforward and practical).? Both methods concentrate on honest body measurements and how much wearing ease is desired in a garment.? Fairly easy and no trying to fit yourself with tissue paper.

Mary.

Jaya,?

I wonder which way would look better in a drop shoulder?? Fast rate first or slow?

Ann, it is my first Grandbaby!

My son married two years ago.? He's 36 now, so I'm happy that they on parent track.? They live about a mile away, so they only have to call, and I'll be there to scoop her up whenever they need it.? We are all so happy about it.

Thanks for sharing about the current crazy times.? It just feels good to get it off my chest.? I realize I'm not the Lone Ranger feeling this way, but...well, you know.

Mary.

How incredibly wonderful for you, to have them so close!

?

It’s been 20 months since we’ve been in the same room as our Grands, and longer for our older son. The Grands came to Philadelphia by train where we picked them up for a very abbreviated visit right before Christmas 2019. Thank goodness for face time!

Hi Mary,
Finally got around to reading the entire post.?

How exciting about the grand baby!? Congratulations!

I have actually been knitting a few more complex pieces a year now but I mostly spin and weave these days. I may make some more fabric to sew things out of.?

As for exercise, we’ve been grateful that we invested in home workout equipment over the years. We have almost a full gym downstairs and have been using it a lot. We also use the Peloton app (we don’t have Peloton equipment) to take classes in strength training and stretching and I’m using my old yoga DVDs also. I plan to start Tai Chi today with some DVDs I have. Krish and I went to some Tai Chi Chih (a simplified Tai Chi) classes at the town hall before the pandemic. The teacher has restarted those but I find them really slow because she’s catering to a couple of people who don’t seem to get the movements. When we started, she taught us the whole routine in 3 weeks, but in 3 weeks this time, we’ve barely gone through half. So I quit and am going to do it at home.

I also had a couple of exhibitions of my work at local libraries. Patrons can ‘buy’ a piece for a donation to the library of 50% of the value as a recommended donation but as low as $20 if they want. I’ve raised a few hundred dollars for each library this way and both want to continue next year.

That’s it for me. We’ve all been well, including my dad.

Love reading what everyone is making and doing. My poor parents have been having a lengthy health saga including Mum going into hospital 7 weeks ago for an infection and breaking her hip there two days later. She has not been able to return home and will be transferring to a residential home a mile from us this coming Wednesday. It has been a LOT of work supporting her in the hospital and my father alone at home. Sadly she needs professional care available 24/7 now, although Dad is furious about it and wants her to return home and look after him the way she used to. Sadly not an option. Thank goodness for four good and supportive siblings.

?

I did manage to finally get out to DH in Geneva, after nine months of travel not permitted. It was lovely. Hoping travel stays opened up through the rest of the year.

?

I’ve hardly done any making for months, too weary.

Here’s to better times coming

Jenny,
Glad you were able to go and see Alastair in Geneva. But I’m sorry to hear about your mother and yes, your father will have to adjust. I had to forbid my father from driving and my sister has said that he can’t go the NY Public Library on his own. He’s annoyed at us for these decisions but they are non-negotiable. He’s too frail to be wandering around on his own.
