Cal fires

Therese, Amy, Shannon, Sarah,
Any of you affected? I think some might be close to Therese. Not sure about the So Cal ones and I don't think there are any around Sacramento but I don't know. T

I am sure many of you are suffering from bad air due to the smoke.

Sacramento area is surrounded by fires but not in direct danger. ?We are on alert and have documents, pet carriers, etc close at hand because we potentially have another lightning storm coming that could cause localized fires. But mainly we are blanketed with smoke and ash fall so no one can do much outdoors. ?It’s almost as bad as it was 2 years ago when schools were closed for several days. ?

From Facebook, Therese is still on evacuation watch I think. ?SoCal is fairly clear for now. ?

Thanks for asking Jaya,?

Yes Jaya, thanks for asking. So, reporting in: the Walbridge fire, 50,000 acres / 0% contained / growing, is about 10 miles as the crow flies to the west of us. We're on the southeastern flank (which is more like 5 miles away, burning slowly through big old timber), with the river and its valley between us - but if it burns down to the river (not an unlikely scenario), it wouldn't be difficult for it to jump across in our wooded area. We are currently under evacuation warning - not order - so we are packed and ready to go, but staying put until/unless they make it mandatory. Thousands of people around us to south, west, and north are under mandatory order. Happily, CAL FIRE and the county have learned a lot about evacuations over the last four years. They are being VERY cautious, announcing warnings and orders well before danger is imminent. I doubt there will be any emergency middle-of-the-night evacuations.

Got my parents out of here to a friend's in Santa Rosa yesterday, though, for them this is really discombobulating. Eric and I are taking it in stride; it's amazing how your attitude about disasters develops as you deal with several of them over a couple of years. Other people are freaking out on our behalf, and we're having to tell them to calm down :-)? We do have friends who have lost homes already, including one that Eric designed and built 30 years ago, very sad about that - and another home he did a lot of work on for a friend is threatened or gone over in Napa. We realized last night we should pack his original plans for houses he's designed - who knows, maybe we'll have to build one of them for ourselves on of these years.

Air quality is varying, smoke coming and going, sometimes it's ok to be outside working in the garden and sometimes it isn't. Fire *will* continue to grow - main concern is for the Dry Creek Valley northwest of Healdsburg at the moment. And we are in another red flag weather warning - more dry lightning expected tonight. Firefighting resources are very thin on the ground.?

Doing lots of hand sewing and knitting as we watch and wait.? Most fun: just finished the applique embellishment on an Alabama Chanin-style skirt, putting it together today. Not that I have anywhere to wear real clothes!

Oy Therese this is terrifying. And you must have better lungs than me - we’ve already had a week of unhealthy air and have been even more stuck inside than usual. The fires are 300 miles away and the sky is white with smoke. There also doesn’t seem to be an end to the heatwave.?

Can 2020 please be over soon?

Therese,
Thanks for the detailed update. I'm glad you got your parents out so that is one less thing to worry about if you evacuate. Please take care and we'll all be sending mojo to you and to the others who are affected. Yes, pack the plans because the owners might want them. But only if you can. I don't know how much you can take with you.

Post photos of the skirt, we can vicariously enjoy it with you. I bought some 'sleep dresses' and am living in them. I sweat so much that I am going through T-shirts and pajamas (pretty much all I wear in the house) faster than we can do laundry because I don't have tons of them. The dresses double the number!

Sarah,
I'm sorry I didn't realize how close they were to Sacramento. I was thinking NoCal and I had heard there were some in SoCal. The maps are different on each site because they aren't all getting updated, which was confusing me. Stay safe.

We are, fingers crossed, clear for now. There was a big one just east of us a few weeks ago (the Apple Fire, with the pyrocumulus clouds that could be seen from Arizona & Nevada) but it is fully contained and quite remote. We’ve had lots of small lightening-strike fires but thankfully they’ve all been extinguished quickly.?
