Questions About Kenton Midi Kit
6
Hello everyone, I recently had a Kenton Midi Kit installed into a CS80. It looks like something was not done correctly during the installation, since the mod and pitch wheels are not working. I have tried 2 different controllers; notes are being triggered, aftertouch and program changes work, but the wheels do not. It does not matter if the toggle switch is up or down. I have tried to reset the midi mode, which returns everything to the default settings, but no success. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Also I am not sure if the red button is working properly. I spoke with Harry at Kenton, and when you enter midi program mode (by hitting the button 2 times in succession) there should be no sound being triggered in the CS80 when you play different keys on the controller, to assign different midi settings. But when I am in the midi program mode, the CS is still playing notes from the controller. The transpose mode does seem to be working. Harry was not 100% sure there should be no sound, since he did not have a CS80 in the shop. Can anyone tell me if I should here notes triggered from the CS while its in midi program mode? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Best regards, Alex

Roland vp330 mk2
Hi Federico, No, Kent cancelled my trip this week as he’s ben too busy to finish all the things I needed from him to warrant a trip to him in Surrey, so we’ve pushed it over to next week. As promised, I will contact you once I have the VP330 and have sorted out the pictures. Thanks for the heads-up on the SH101 - I’m not looking to take one of these into stock at this time, but thanks for the offer. All the best. MIDIBoard for sale near San Diego
Hi all! Just wanted to give the group first chance at the MIDIBoard I'm selling. It seems to be all working. I checked velocity and aftertouch on every key. Case has a bunch of little dings - mostly on the wood sides. Also including a set of V3.0 ROMs I never had time to install. Too big/heavy to ship so only for pickup in Vista, CA - north San Diego County - near LegoLand :) Photos (hope the link works!) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2225546761095441&type=3 Contact me with questions / offers. I’ll give it a few days before I put it on eBay. Thanks, David

CS-80: make a plan for a servicing
9
Congratulations! It's a wonderful beast. Just a quick comment. I would approach things differently. I would hunt down and fix just the known problems, and any more I did find after it got it mostly working. Then calibrate it fully. Only then would I consider any sort of upgrade or changing out of parts. My reasons are "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and also we only have so much time and $ in this world; I'd rather spend it playing the beast than looking at a pile of parts and hoping that someday I can play after it's been hardened/upgraded to survive the "Next" 50 years. Cheers, Kyle

Selling mine Yamaha CS80
I'm seeling my "almost working" CS80 from S?o Paulo, Brazil. U$15,000 plus shipping. https://reverb.com/item/20153201-yamaha-cs80 From the last technical guy who worked on it: When I got this synth to restore, (restore is very different from "fix" and goes a lot further) it was almost totally dead, only one oscillator running, with presets totally altered by problems in logic circuits, etc. . I identified the defective oscillators, repaired them, identified the problem VCFs, noticed, changed ALL caps from ALL modules, ALL logic and operational chips, getting everything up and running. " Bests!

Selling/Trading Mine (not working)
Hi, guys! I wanna trade my CS80 for an ARP2600 plus one Juno 106 or similiar. I'm from S?o Paulo, Brazil and the cost to sell U$15.000 (Plus Shipping). Please understeand that shipping from Brazil is quite a pain, but "doable". Clean CS-80 Overall Circuit Diagram
Thanks Scott for picking up this one. I added the missing dot to the diagram. By the way, the D716 diode is missing on the SVU circuit diagram of the service manual, but present on the circuit board (and drawn as a regular diode). It must have been a late added component. (The circuit diagram shows numerous other modifications also.) Joachim

Power Supply Schematic - Diode D716 Correction
Thank you Joachim for your efforts! I have a huge print of the overall schematic hanging in the shop, nice! I have begun my restoration of an inop unit, starting with the power supply. An error I found on the original drawing is the line that shows diode D716 tied to diode D714. This is incorrect. The cathode side of D716 should be tied to ground, and the anode side of D714 should be tied to ground. That is, there should be a tie-dot at the intersection of the GND1 line and the line crossing it that connects the cathode of D716 and the anode of D714. This is verified on the actual circuit board here on the bench. A question for the group is, what is the correct diode type for D716? The (bad) component here pulled from my board was a zener which doesn't match the schematic which shows a regular diode and doesn't seem to make sense as a protection device. The CS-50 and CS-60 diagrams don't have this diode in the circuit, and the board trace in the CS-80 manual doesn't have it either. The manual board trace does not match my circuit board in several areas. Is there an updated one somewhere? Thanks, Scott

Stuck sounds from the CS80
3
There is nothing between the SH and M but a wire. Output K1 of SH board is bound to the K input of M11 and an other wire goes from there to the K input of M21. So most certainly, the issue does not follow this path. Try and check the V input of the M boards, the one where the vibrato arrives. Does the pitch variation really concern all boards (M21 to M28)? If so, could it be a damaged "Detune ch2" slider? Joachim

New member, new cs50 owner

Geetings from Canada. I've just purchased a cs50 with some "touch control" mechanical problems. I'm wondering if anyone can snap a pic to help me re-build mine. The part I need to see is the metal bracket that functions as the "shutter" between the photosensor and the bulb. Hope that makes sense. Best, Colin

CS50 blowing uppermost fuse

My CS50 started blowing fuses. A preliminary check revealed nothing obvious in the power supply - is there a recommended routine for this? Maybe first checking for shorts in the board feeds?

CS80 Trade
4
Hi, guys, unfortunately things here in Brazil is real complicated and, after 8 year with a CS80 not outputting any sound, I'll get rid of my CS80 (please do not convince me the opposite). I'm looking for a good deal, so I'm here to check with you guys which synth you would trade for a "broken" CS80 (It turns on, but no sound output. Lot's of the best technicians tried to figure it out without success) . I have the option of an Arp 2600, Polymoog, Memorymoog. Do you guys think is a fare trade? Any other options? I like A LOT the EMS Synthi AKS but don't know if the guy who owns it would trade... Thanks! -- Murilo Faria (Mura) aldotheband.com

CS50 Power Supply wiring question - ACK!
3
So i was stupid i admit and maybe didn't take the precautions i needed to - in doing a power supply rebuild i only took macro documentary pics and not an 'overall' - but i THINK i got all the wires right - it would be heartbraking after having spent the last few months rebuilding this power supply to blow it up when turning it on again to test it ... so the question is ... "do i have the two longer orange wires you see in the foreground going to the right places?" - there are two possibilities only ... either as they are now or the reverse order??" (note the splices in the wires) I checked clues like the printing on the wiring but both run in the same direction and are cut at the same place on the printing sequence ... (ugh) ... i've gone through the schematic several times and i'm just not confident enough about it ...though think i may have it right ... the leftmost orange wire comes from the collector of the 2SD234 and the one to the right comes from the 2SA745.

Cs70m for sale in Phila

There’s a CS70m for sale in Phila; they’re quite uncommon... even rarer than the 80s. It’s on Phila craigslist. I also know the seller and could assist in passing on contact information. -Ron Ron Joseph

CS-50 Portamento/Glissando problem
6
Hi. I'm on tour with my CS-50 and one voice suddenly is stuck on Glissando (I can't switch it to portamento). I need to fix it fast before the next show... I only have a meter and soldering iron (and limited knowledge and skills :) with me, so I'm hoping to just quickly swap in some new parts (can't do much testing). Is the issue likely to be the comparator IC (the 4069 inverter) in that part of the circuit (IC23), or is there something else I should target? Again, glissando works - so maybe the gate is stuck on?? I would like to try to make one stop or one order for parts before I attempt to do this, so it would be great to hear some of your guesses so I can get those parts before I go in. Thanks! DT

CS80 Vanishing voices mystery
14
My CS80 had this problem for some time now and I'm starting to think it might be heat-related. So some voices tend to randomly go dead especially in the bank 1. It is difficult to diagnose because when I take the card out to inspect they sometimes come back....When I screw the card back sometimes they go dead again. Also when I leave my synth on ant it's hot some voices die and come back again when cold..... I live with it but I would like to get rid of this issue once for all. Did you guys had the same problem before? Maybe it is not M card problem at all but TRG board for example?
