CS50 schematics anywhere?? 6
Hi all... i'm new to the group. I have a CS50 service manual i downloaded but can't seem to find any drawings in the package - it's only a long description of the concepts of the design. I was looking for a set of schematic and board drawings. Anyone have a lead on these? Specifically I'm trying to troubleshoot a blowing upper fuse - and it's kind of hard to figure out without knowing which of the pins in the molex connectors are what ... so i can see if there's a short ...

Wah-Wah 13
Hi folks, Not been here for a long time... but I thought I'd make a quick post. I've been playing the 80's a lot recently... and have gotten into altering the Brilliance fader during play. It's quite tricky to get a free hand in sync so I thought I'd look at the "wah" function on the expression pedal. First thing that struck me was that along with "wah" you also must have volume. Not what I'd like. I'd like the volume to be set and just open and close the "Brillinace". Second thing was that I thought I might be able to "modify" to get just "wah"... but looking at the schematic I cannot fathom how the "wah" function works. It doesn't seem to be a direct replacement for the Brilliance lever...? Could anyone please shed some light on it please...? So, apart from disconnecting the Brill pot's wiper and putting it to a foot pedal sweeping between +/-15 volts - which was an idea I had - can anyone think of a quick way of getting that function...? Cheers, Tom

One more thing... 3
Hi Lucid Sound, I remember that in the case i mentioned, some of the voltages I measured would change unexpectedly when I played up and down the keyboard, thus giving me the clue that the analog and digital systems had become "floating" relative to each other. Kyle jkjelec

CS80 Strange Behaviour 2
Today I had a CS80 in for a service. Basically most of the voices were working, but a couple were dead and there was the usual problem with unequal volume and filter cutoff. Nothing too drastic then. I found two dead oscillator chips, but have some spares, so that fixed that. So, after several hours work, all of panel 1 was sounding pretty decent. Then the audio just quit. No output. Nothing. I checked the fuses and power supplies, all appear good. Taking an oscillator card, I can see a key voltage on Pin 2 of the VCO chip which changes as I play the keyboard, yet no waveform output. Take another card, same thing. So, how about the white noise? It comes into the M card, but doesn’t leave the filters. Next thing – I find that the ground on the M card is referenced to GND2. If I meter between the GND1 and GND2, I see around 2k ohms. Confused? So am I. So if I measure the 15V rail at the VCO chip, I see around +11V if I take the negative lead of the meter to the metal chassis. Where to go from here? Any ideas welcome. MTIA Lucid.

CS80 schematic project
Hi all. As many of you know who’ve repaired CS-80s (and related), the Yamaha schematics and board layouts are full of errors. In addition, in my work in replacing parts on various boards, it’s become a huge pain that most resistors and capacitors don’t have any reference designators (e.g. R21, C7). This makes it very difficult to make parts list and keep track of what’s been replaced or even refer to components when doing repairs. To start with, I’ve made up my own marked up versions of the KAS and M-Board schematics and board layouts with all parts given reference designators. I’ve put copies of the M-card files in this file group: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/yamahacs80/files/EDA%20Project These are very helpful but it would be much better to re-create the schematics in a real EDA tool. This would allow cleaner corrections, generation of parts lists, and possibly even creation of board layout files to create new cards with better layout and pad locations for modern parts. I’d at least want to create the basic pad and silkscreen layers to help with debugging boards by having labels for all the parts. The website even has direct links to PBC manufacturers if we wanted to create actual boards. I think it can even do some Spice simulations. I looked around at various tools and found a great looking website at easyeda.com. It’s got schematic and board layout tools that are very easy to use and runs on any computer or tablet since it runs in a browser. I’ve started working on the M-Board schematic and was hoping some other folks would be interested in helping out completing the schematic based on my marked-up schematic PDF. I put a PDF of how far I’ve gotten in the folder listed above (most reference designators are wrong). I’ve also made a public copy of the easyeda project here: https://easyeda.com/editor#id=5cd0e75f889b4befad4f617a69cc3731 So, who is interested in this and willing to help out. Although the website is fairly easy to use, it would still be extremely beneficial for people involved to have some knowledge/experience in creating schematics. Take a look and let me know! Thanks, David

Some CS news 2
Hi all. Just passing on a couple of articles I’ve seen lately that should be of interest. First, an SY-1 on eBay. Currently $400 with no bids and $550 buy-it-now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/112323223959 I’m tempted. Here’s someone who’s apparently working on a rack-mount CS80. It’s supposed to be available as a kit or fully built. http://www.matrixsynth.com/2017/03/new-yamaha-cs80-rackmount-in-works.html Anyone know more about this? Crow’s GX-1 filter clone. http://www.matrixsynth.com/2017/02/oldcrow-modular-gx1-bandpass-resonator.html CS-80 Ring-Mod clone module. http://www.matrixsynth.com/2017/01/detachement-3-spinner-stereo-ring-mod.html Enjoy! Dead CS80 - finding a short 18
So my beloved CS80 died on me after calibration and tuning. To resume: 1. After calibrating BA, KAS and M-boards, 4th M Board 1-channel did not play funky3, memory 1,3 and panel presets (last 4). 2. After inspecting BA board for the possible cause of this the PSU died (played a low note for the few seconds first). 3.Rebuild and calibrated PSU - Died again after power on (also low note first). 4. The upper GND and lower 15V rails are shorted! 5. I?ve tried to find a short isolating -6,5 and 8,5V terminals on the KAS, S/H, KBC 1 and 2 boards - no success (desoldered the wires and the ground and checked with my DVM for continuity - there were no shorts). I am out of ideas. If the rails for GND and 15v are shorted does that mean that I should repeat the point 5 but between +15v and E terminals on every possible board? Seems logical. I would appreciate any help.

Tuning..again - Transposition gate zeroing? 11
So I am chasing the dragon yet again... What I am after is this steady ultraslow sweep between the channels and some of them are banging to quickly. I have never adjusted transposition gate zeroing before and here is my question (I?d like to know do I read the manual right..). 1. What does really the transposition gate zeroing do? Can it effect tuning between two channels on one voice? 2. It says I should measure the voltage between CP6 and EK terminals. Does that mean I should put a minus probe on CP6 and plus on EK (or vice-versa)? 3. It says I should read .120mV. at 2?. My DVM is very basic and the max resolution I get is 200m. Depending on the board i read 0.28 to 0.40! I have no clue is that normal every board is way off? Thanks in advance for your patient answers.

Tomita Memorial Museum display 4
There was an exhibition called Synth Fest 16 in Tokyo last weekend. A major highlight was a selection of Tomita's gear. Tomita's long time associate Hideki Matsutake (Logic System) was either willed or made executor of Tomita's synth collection and this is the first big public display since his death in May. http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/sale-event/16394 (Ishibashi is a music instrument retail chain reporting on the show as an event, I just used their link since I know people don't always want to deal with facebook) Notice Tomita's CS80 has a CV and Gate ("T" for Trig?) mod for each voice. I also see he signed some of his instruments presumably to prove they were his in the future. Tomita's main use of the CS80 was on the album "Daphnis et Chloe" (called "Bolero" in the US and "The Ravel Album" in parts of Europe) he also used it on "Grand Canyon" though not as obviously. I've not heard mention of his using the CS-80 as a controller for presumably his modulars. He definitely was always into looking into techniques in speeding up his painstaking multitracking process. One of the more unusual items is what looks like a small trade show display of high quality synthesizer pots that I guess at some point Tomita was involved in the re-manufacture of. The other, more of digital fans is the Casio Cosmo prototype system. My understanding is Casio wanted to do a high end sampler and Tomita was hired as a consultant and endorser. They eventually did put out the prosumer level FZ-1 but by then other companies had carved up the sampler market. nick
