YAMAHA CS-80 for sale
Hello my friends, I have made the decision to eventually part from my beloved monster synth YAMAHA CS-80 that I purchase 2001. Over extended period of time I completely restored all capacitors, OPAMPS 4000 CMOS, trimpots, and even upgradeded tuning pots all to multi turn bourns pots. The Synth is very stable in tuning and over all. Never had an issue. Al tuned to factory specs. I am selling it because I have a family now and would have to liquidate most of my vintage gear. It comes with a huge and custom made flight case. And has it¡¯s own very sturdy legs. (Not original Yamaha!) I am asking 20¡¯500€ and can provide photos for serious buyers. The synth is located in Basel, Switzerland and could be shipped Worldwide. Send private mail to get in touch with me Csaba

CS-60 Sustain issue
4
Hi, I'm not certain that the sustain functions are working correctly on my CS-60. It seems as if the notes in Sustain I are being cut off when they are not supposed to be. Here is one environment where I can hear something odd: 1) I close down the low pass filter and set a long release on the panel (2-3 seconds at least) 2) I then play a chord and then hit a short note on the lowest C (picked only because it will make the oddity more noticeable). 3) I would expect that hitting this lowest C would NOT kill the chord as it is is releasing, since in Sustain I all releases are independent. BUT it DOES kill off the entire chord. 4) Next issue is that if I quickly hit a middle C key while listening to the final moments of the release from the low C (which killed off the other chord), this causes the first hit low C note to suddenly get louder AND the chord that was previously cut off returns (provided the release is still within its originally set time frame/trajectory), and it even sounds like its filter is opening again. Is this weird behavior, or is this how Sustain I should work? I should note that the ribbon is currently removed for repair, in case that somehow affects release times (not sure why it would though). Thanks DT

OT: Supplemental Booklets etc.
Some time ago I have scanned DX7 II Supplemental booklets contributed by some members of YamahaDX yahoo group, our college Rawl Gelinas processed scans and now all of them are for public use officially (together with AfterTouch magazine we two have scanned). Still some booklets are missing: Quick Reference Guide Modifying Preset Voices Understanding Fractional Scalings Programming Fractional Scalings Memory Management Advanced Midi Applications Yamaha published in the end of 80ies also "QX3 Operations & Applications Supplemental Booklet", and some guidebooks for V50 synthesizer: Performance Voicing Guidebook Rhythm Programming Guidebook Sequencer Guidebook (+ Demo Data Disk) If by chance somebody here has anything from these, and is willing to sell, contribute or just lend for scanning (I will pay for shipment in all cases), everybody can later get it as PDF - same case as the previous material we have scanned and published. Thanks for any info or contribution. Daniel Forro

Complete VCF Alignment
3
Did someone achieve a complete VCF alignment? I'm asking this because while following the steps on page 11 of the CS80's adjustment procedure manual, I came across voltages that are different from those on my unit, and even unreachable with the variable resistors. Using VR7 and VR9 to shift the cutoff frequencies of both filters to get the maximum amplitude is OK. The problem occurs while trying to use VR8 and VR10 to set the resonance. The amplitude I can get is 2.8Vp-p, but certainly not 4.3Vp-p with HPF and 1Vp-p instead of 2.2Vp-p with LPF. Did someone notice analogous variations?

HIgh Pitched Whine
13
Hi Still having issues with this CS50 PSU. I've got a horrible high pitched whine all over everything. If I turn the amps off, I can actually hear this noise emanating from the PSU. If I put a probe on the lines, I've got oscillation on both the + and -15V lines. Much worse on the -15V line. I've recapped it, changed all the transistors, and diodes (Apart from the rectifiers) Changed the 4458, but no change. What's really odd is that if I touch the anode of the -15V zener (Opamp supply) with a scope probe, it collapses the Opamp supply. Also... If I remove voice cards 3 and 4 from the rack and the problem goes away... even though they're still connected to the power. Any incite, or suggestions most welcome... I've got to get this thing sorted in a couple of weeks, so a client can use it on a session. :-s

Yamaha CS80 FOR SALE
5
Well, I just got the CS80 and now I have to sell it due to lawyer fees. I figured I would post it here first. I'm having my engineer friend go through it to tune it up and adjust everything. I'm going to have him track down the volume issue and repair it before it leaves. I feel that the volume issue is only a minor problem. If anyone here would like to contact me use my gmail address charleshowes23 I prefer not to ship it, and will drive halfway across the country to meet. We can work out the details. I am also not going to put it on eBay.

Volume issue
Hello, I'm having an issue with my CS80. The harpsichord presets are both very low in volume. On every 8th key press the note is louder. Same with a few other presets. Do I have a bunch of bad VCA chips?

Hi / group activity
13
Hi all. I know the group has been pretty sleepy lately. I'm not worried since everyone is busy and activity always waxes and wanes. I hope to be posting a lot soon. I've had a rough last few months; I've been out of work and just got a new job and my wife, who was pretty healthy her whole life, had a heart attack out of nowhere! She's much better now and things are recovering around here so I should be able to start working on the CS80 mods I was in the middle of. David

Mono Modification
4
While restoring this CS50 I thought, that a mono-unisono mode would be very helpful for tuning. So I am looking for a description of that modification (especially for a CS50). I've searched the groups archive for it, but did not find any details about it. I only found it mentioned as taken for known. Are there any detailed explanations somewhere? I tried to understand the principle of the KAS board, but I don't find any signal that resets the voice counter. I also don't find any significant difference between the KAS board of a CS50 and a CS60 (at least in this aspect). Florian

WTB: Yamaha CS-50/60(/80?) screws for panel and keyboard mounting
4
Hello I got hold of an CS-50 in a quite "uncared" state. As first thing, I am searching for the two pairs of long screws, which hold the panel and the keyboard. Assumingly I will have to help myself with a threaded rod, but first I want to try to them here. Thanks! Florian

oops, there's an error in my last message...
8
Somehow, my posting here calls the mod a sync mod, when in fact it is only a cascading unison mod. Sorry if that confused anyone.
|
BY now many of you have probably seen....
3
I have formed a CAD designed board to accomplish offering a sync mod for the CS's... yes, all 3 of the 50,60 &80. It's listed on e-bay, but thanks to millions in recent medical bills and more surgeries for my wife, I can't pop the dough for the qty needed. I am able to provide working protos, but that's not logical as it takes hrs to hard wire it all up. If any of you haven't seen this, here's the e-bay link: Yamaha CS80 CS-80 synth mod. Unison, poly 2 & CS60,50 analog ! Have a listen ! Yamaha CS80 CS-80 synth mod. Unison, poly 2 & CS6... US $199.00 New other (see details) in Musical Instruments & Gear, Pro Audio Equipment, Synthesizers View on www.ebay.com Preview by Yahoo Hopefully, there's enough of you who appreciate the accessibility of this mod, cause until now, they cost a ton from Kent, plus you have to send your baby off to get it done. Hope you folks want some of these, I wiull only need about 10 days to stuff and ship the finished boards !
