Hi Stephen,

Fine tracks! Thanks for sharing.

Wich effects did you use on the CS-50 track? Is there a chorus on it or is it "only" the reverb?

Wow! Incredible background info, Stephen. I noticed that the Chorus ?and Leslie switches have been moved up in line with the pitch ribbon.
It'll be interesting to see in whose hands this unit ends up.

YAMAHA CS-80 for sale

Hello my friends,

I have made the decision to eventually part from my beloved monster synth YAMAHA CS-80 that I purchase 2001. Over extended period of time I completely restored all capacitors, OPAMPS 4000 CMOS, trimpots, and even upgradeded tuning pots all to multi turn bourns pots. The Synth is very stable in tuning and over all. Never had an issue. Al tuned to factory specs.
I am selling it because I have a family now and would have to liquidate most of my vintage gear.
It comes with a huge and custom made flight case. And has it¡¯s own very sturdy legs. (Not original Yamaha!)
I am asking 20¡¯500€ and can provide photos for serious buyers. The synth is located in Basel, Switzerland and could be shipped Worldwide.

Send private mail to get in touch with me

Re: CS-60 Sustain issue

Hi,

Thank you both for your detailed answers. The brilliance controls do affect how much of what I called an ¡°oddity¡± is present (in the center position, it seems to go away), so both of your descriptions make perfect sense with what I am hearing. Great to know that nothing is wrong with my CS.

best,

DT

you are experiencing some of the features of the cs60s 80s... in sus 1 the releasing portions are controllable by the scaling.... if you have the Low portion of the keyboard with less vca and a brighter filter, those attributes will be added to the releasing stage....? things not able to be modulated upon release in sus 1 are pitch (ribbon)...? if you play a chord in the middle and let it release and play the high zone with a VCA boost and a VCF cut, that will affect the middle hanging notes the same way....

I use my CS80 like this rhythmically to create a manual type of sequence playing... playing rythmically in and out of lower and upper regions

Hi,

I'm not certain that the sustain functions are working correctly on my CS-60. It seems as if the notes in Sustain I are being cut off when they are not supposed to be.

Here is one environment where I can hear something odd:

1) I close down the low pass filter and set a long release on the panel (2-3 seconds at least)

2) I then play a chord and then hit a short note on the lowest C (picked only because it will make the oddity more noticeable).?

3) I would expect that hitting this lowest C would NOT kill the chord as it is is releasing, since in Sustain I all releases are independent. BUT it DOES kill off the entire chord.

4) Next issue is that if I quickly hit a middle C key while listening to the final moments of the release from the low C (which killed off the other chord), this causes the first hit low C note to suddenly get louder AND the chord that was previously cut off returns (provided the release is still within its originally set time frame/trajectory), and it even sounds like its filter is opening again.

Is this weird behavior, or is this how Sustain I should work?

I should note that the ribbon is currently removed for repair, in case that somehow affects release times (not sure why it would though).

Thanks?DT

Re: CS-60 Sustain issue

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi DT.

I think I know the effect you are talking about and it¡¯s normal - if not what you¡¯d want. ?The problem is that that there are 3 DACs that each output the voltages corresponding to the notes played. ?The main one is on the KAS board and each of the 8 voltages go through sample/hold circuits on the KAS and S/H boards. ?This is where the Sustain I/II logic comes in and freezes (or not) and note voltages. ? However, the KBC boards also have DACs which are used for the Keyboard Control Brilliance/Level High/Low. ? These don¡¯t have the sample/hold circuits or ¡°know¡± about the Sustain mode. So, you play a high note with a long sustain in Sustain I (or is it II - I forget) and then hit a low key. ?The high note is still sounding but its filter/volume could suddenly change if the Keyboard Control knobs aren¡¯t at their center positions since the keyboard scanner will tell the DACs that all 8 notes are that low note.

Hope that makes some sense.

Re: CS80 keyboard contacts

Marc, Tim Conniff says the contacts are very hard to find, people have salvaged what there is and are holding on to them. ?Tim also states he is working on an exact replica of the contacts (one octave), but he cautions it will be a while before they're available. ?Sorry I don't have better news here, finding a parted-out CS-80 may be the best way to go but those are nearly as hard to find in the US and Japan as they are in Europe. ?I'll keep my eyes open, would be good to have some myself. ?Kent Spong would be another good person to ask (another yahoo group member). ?VR, scott

CS80 keyboard contacts

Hello CS80 lovers,

I'm working on a CS80 repair in Amsterdam.
The keyboard contacts are very bad.
Anybody knows where I could obtain replacements?

Best regards,

Marc

New member, new cs50 owner

Geetings from Canada.

I've just purchased a cs50 with some "touch control" mechanical problems. I'm wondering if anyone can snap a pic to help me re-build mine.

The part I need to see is the metal bracket that functions as the "shutter" between the photosensor and the bulb. Hope that makes sense.

Best,
Colin

Re: OT: Supplemental Booklets etc.

Daniel Forr¨®

Some time ago I have scanned DX7 II Supplemental booklets contributed by some members of YamahaDX yahoo group, our college Rawl Gelinas processed scans and now all of them are for public use officially (together with AfterTouch magazine we two have scanned).

Still some booklets are missing:

Quick Reference Guide
Modifying Preset Voices
Understanding Fractional Scalings
Programming Fractional Scalings
Memory Management
Advanced Midi Applications

Yamaha published in the end of 80ies also "QX3 Operations & Applications Supplemental Booklet", and some guidebooks for V50 synthesizer:

Performance Voicing Guidebook
Rhythm Programming Guidebook
Sequencer Guidebook
(+ Demo Data Disk)

If by chance somebody here has anything from these, and is willing to sell, contribute or just lend for scanning (I will pay for shipment in all cases), everybody can later get it as PDF - same case as the previous material we have scanned and published.

Thanks for any info or contribution.

Re: Complete VCF Alignment

I wonder about this too. I have been in touch with JM while calibrating my CS-80 and after a few days of experimentation and discussion we have different findings.?

I had trouble on two voice boards to go up to 8.4Vpp for HPF resonance, so I decided to take the value from the CS-60 manual and go for the 7.6Vpp as instructed there. Not sure what the right value for a CS-80 is or where it starts to sound wrong.

Also instruction for the 2.2Vpp for LPF cutoff does not seem right. If I want to go for 2.2Vpp I have to dial the trimpot almost full to the end. The original value gave me a reading of 1.4-1.6Vpp, so I did the same as JM and used 1.6Vpp.

I wonder about the other guys who work on CS-80s how you handle this part or what your findings are?

So the problem is with the IG00153 VCO chips you think? I still have a few in stock if you want any...?

---In yamahacs80@..., <yamahacs80@...> wrote:

Hi. Thanks for your reply. On your advice I did replace the caps on the S/H board which got rid of some unwanted crackling. Then ?went back and re-calibrated the power supply, S/H and KAS boards. Which I had already done, but the tolerances are small and some were out. Also the transposition gate zeroing on each voice shifted a bit (0mv between cp6 and EK). The tuning was then better, but still three or four voices were 20 or 30 cents flat on the lower octaves on the 8 and 16 feet ranges. Eventually I tried swapping the VCO chips around and found the fault moved with the VCOs. So I think I cannot improve it any more.
