Moving a CS80 up the stairs alone
This actually went pretty well considering I'm only 5'4" and not exactly a body-builder. ?My wife did help a bit cranking the winch, but she's about 4'11" and 100lbs so she wasn't going to be lifting it :)

Complete VCF Alignment
Did someone achieve a complete VCF alignment?
I'm asking this because while following the steps on page 11 of the CS80's adjustment procedure manual, I came across voltages that are different from those on my unit, and even unreachable with the variable resistors. Using VR7 and VR9 to shift the cutoff frequencies of both filters to get the maximum amplitude is OK. The problem occurs while trying to use VR8 and VR10 to set the resonance. The amplitude I can get is 2.8Vp-p, but certainly not 4.3Vp-p with HPF and 1Vp-p instead of 2.2Vp-p with LPF. Did someone notice analogous variations? |
Re: CS-80 loss of +8.5 and -6.5 voltage on PSU
Thank you David for your welcome!? Actually what's really funny is that i started the project of completely restoring my CS80 after finding that site, from which i shared that link from... and readin your post and your last name, i just realized that it was you behind that same site! World is small among passionate people, isnt it? :-) Thank you for those details concerning TR9 and TR14, hidden on the heatsink.I'm not sure i correctly identified them yet, but i will take the PSU off the unit this weekend (as soon as i find those jumpers for connecting 15/15S pins). Actually, i realized that my middle-position 500mA fuse was blown, even though it looked perfectly clean; today i simply ran a continuity test with my DVM, and it failed. My +8.5/-6.5v issue came right after my probe slipped and touched another pin around (giving me a constant sound from the headphones/speakers of the CS80 as a result), which led me to think i created a limited-time short somewhere, which then certainly blew the fuse. But in case there's a short anywhere else (indeed, it recently happened that my BA board got damaged, after i tried to take it out but forgetting to powering off the unit, stupid me), maybe i should check some caps on other boards as you suggested. But how to do it without risking to damage the PSU in any way again, or maybe any other boards' components? Is this benchmark PSU you got the only way to go in such cases, or is there any other workaround? For example, is there a way to check some caps without running the power up? By using a signal generator maybe? By the way…Would anybody could suggest me an appropriate oscilloscope to buy, for following yamaha tuning procedure? I only made DVM checking for now, and would love to go on further with an oscillo, is there a 'minimum model' to get? (20MHZ is enough? should i go for 100MHZ instead?).I was planning buyind a tektronix TDS 210/220 for ex. And by the way David, thank you again for your site, such a great internet source for CS80 owners!!! Greg |

CS-60 FS VGC!
Hello all.
I’m back after long time, due to the birth of my lady Fernanda (1,5 y ago) that set me in stand by for my keyboards… :-) To whom it may concern: I write because there is a friend who will sell his Yamaha CS 60. It is in EXCELLENT esthetic conditions, everything works like it should (but I am going to check it carefully if anyone is interested). It has no legs but looks like new. Most of the “vital” caps and critical ICs have been professionally replaced already. If interested, please let me know before he put it on auction on e*ay… Located in Italy (Napoli). He wants to sell it for 3000 euros plus shipping/handling NOT MINE (I am happy with my CS80, totally refurbished, thanks again friends for the support you gave me in pursuing that goal) Fernando |
Re: CS-80 loss of +8.5 and -6.5 voltage on PSU
I actually just won this auction this morning and picked up the power supply at lunch from the guy:
Should be good for prototyping and, if I run into blown 8.5/6.5 supplies in the future, to find the shorts without replacing the fuse a dozen times! David |

Welcome to the group! ? As to the +8.5/-6.5 supplies, I’ve always found the problem to be a semi or hard short, usually one of the caps on the TSB boards. ?It’s possible it’s the op-amp or transistors in the PS, but I haven’t run across that. ?As to where TR9 and 14 are hiding - they’re on the heatsinks, not on the PCB. ?I can’t remember right now whether they’re the big TO3 transistors or (I think more likely) the TO220 transistors. ?If the latter, they’re a massive pain to get to!!! Good luck and let us know what you find. ?David |
Re: CS-80 loss of +8.5 and -6.5 voltage on PSU
Hi everybody, i'm new to this group, and it happens that i have the exact same issue with +8,5 and -6,5 for a few days now.I would follow?Heath Finnie?procedure by replacing?IC722, and both 1000uf caps.I would also check TR09 and TR14 as you suggested Christof, but where do you find those ones? i dont see them on the SVU circuit board and wiring? (http://therogoffs.com/cs80/manuals/CS80_Service_Manual/60%20-%20SVU%20Circuit%20Board%20&%20Wiring.jpg) Thank you! |
CS80 mods?
Hi all.
Wondering what modifications you might have seen / had done / thought of for CS80s and how useful they were. ?Some obvious ones are MIDI (Kenton kit give MIDI in but not out), unison, caps/trimmers/chips (for reliability and stability - not features). What others have you seen or thought of? Variable detune for Ch II with full octave range. Detune lever now only has very small range and feet switches only allow a few choices. What is you want minor 3rd? MIDI out. ?Take advantage of keyboard with poly aftertouch. More presets. ?PIC/Arduino/RaspberryPI board with ADC/DAC to scan panel controls and save/restore like Prophet 5/Obie-X. At waveforms. Sub-octaves? Sub-Osc / PWM Osc per voice? ?Much thicker sounds with independent LFOs. Put on your wishing caps! ?David |
Yamaha CS50 for Sale
Alright, I need to downsize. ?I am selling my CS50. ?If anyone is interested, please let me know. ?It is in near mint cosmetic condition and it works perfect. ?It comes with the legs and the cover. ?I may also have the music rack, but I can't remember at the moment. ?I am looking to get $1500. ?I can send SERIOUS buyers pictures.
Here is a video of me playing it. ? Here are some links to the only pics I have at the moment, but I can take more if someone is interested. ?However, I don't think that CS50 has even a scratch on it. ?I keep all my instruments as collectors pieces. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5550/10503138063_25c323a4ec_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7329/10502959806_6721b5d782_b.jpg I am also thinking about selling my Roland Jupiter 5 for $1800 |

if you think a CS80 could begin to?be?played from a touch screen, you would be misinformed :) ?the i device? will need atleast 3 dimensions .

开云体育Ah didn't know it had to be wired in. Rather use pen and paper. Another distraction I don't need. I'll wait for the CS-80 iOS app. On 8 Jan 2014, at 5:32 pm, "Laurie Curry" <laurie@...> wrote:

开云体育Thats real interesting.. it’s like a recording system that stores and manages patches.I’d buy that for a dollar!! simliar to jupiter 8 save and load tape concept. i wonder how they trigger the load and save .. On 8 Jan 2014, at 2:19 pm, <galaxiesmerge@...> <galaxiesmerge@...> wrote:

CS80 MicroSine?
Anyone here know or have used a MicroSine for the CS80? There is an online link here to the old ad:??? http://www.pinterest.com/pin/59602395038345811/??
Look's like it was a mod that replaced a pair of the custom patches - and gave you a whole lot of recall. Also, I'm keen to know if anyone has done any mods and how that's been working out. Any comments are really welcome! Happy New Year, Galaxiesmerge :) |
Re: Service manual errors / KAS question
Hi all. Happy Holidays to all! I just uploaded some more pics/docs to the folder?http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/yamahacs80/photos/albums/519437225 These are my corrected versions of the CS80 service manual with the correct parts and values. ?I couldn't upload the ODG version of the PCB because of Yahoo's 10MB file limit. ?I'll put it up on my site eventually but at least posted the JPG for now. Now I'm soldering in hundreds of replacement 25-turn trimmers on all 16 voice cards. ?It's going to take a bit of time! ?David |
