New owner of a project 301D
Good morning all you smart people!
At a recent hamfest I bought a poorly 301 for a whole $10. The tag said "bad display" but when I powered it up the display was working, except for 2 segments of the .0 section, no biggy there. What I found is that the display never changes in response to the VFO. It changes bands and displays the bottom of the band, but doesn't move from there. Also, on the lower bands like 80 and 40 I can get audio from USB, but not LSB, and above those frequncies I get sound on LSB but not USB. Contrary thing I guess. Since Yeasu apparently never released an actual service manual I'm wondering where to start with the beast?? I've pulled a few boards, gave the connections a deoxit treatment, it's amazingly clean inside for being such an old radio. Cheers Chris N8FF |
Dear? Chris Around two years ago, I start a restore of a FT-301d. The FT-301 manual have enough information that can help you. The display is really a problem.? The best advice, if possible, is to buy a new from About LSB and USB, the idea is to check both oscillators. Another advice is replace tantalum capacitors c60 and c61 of 6u8 located at the chachi, before them burn out. The power voltage is 13V5, not 13V8 or 14V. 73 PP6EW Emerson Em qua., 5 de out. de 2022 às 13:52, elkhider via <elkhider=[email protected]> escreveu: Good morning all you smart people! |
开云体育Hi Emerson,Elcon is a very nice display but you loose the clear sparkly look of the digit’s. If you want to stay with the original look there are enough of the old ones floating around. Although more work you could add a secondary PCB to the Elcon PCB to be able to run the til303 and til302 displays. These have the same look as the til 306,307 and 308s. Question for you regarding x501 and x502 on the AF board. Doing the SSB point adjust with 1khz and then 300hz never really worked for me. Instead I used a very accurate freq counter and adjusted for 8998.5 and 9001.5. Do you see any issues with this method. Also on a side not these xtals have drifted over time so I had to change the 39pf caps to between 10 and 20pf to be able to reach the right freq.. Hi Robert,
It’s easy to grab the frequency with a scope probe from the center pin of the pot in the carrier balance section. You’ll need an accurate counter that should be tide to a gps frequency standard. With the audio generator you should have no more than 20mV, mine will not go any lower than 34mV. Once that’s set you’ll adjust your power at the mic gain pot located right behind the meter on the skinny PCB, it’s the far left pot. Audio set for 1khz turn mic gain pot for 50watts. Then change to 300hz and adjust each side band for 12.5watts. For me this never really adjusted correctly for what ever reason, do I just set the frequency instead. If you have issues getting to the frequency’s you’ll need to replace the 39pf to a slightly lower value, 20 or 10. Actual frequency should be in the middle of the trimmer frequency swing. These xtals are old and are drifting. On my AM PCB I had a bad xtal no out put on AM. When I adjust this way the audio sounds the same when switching from lsb to usb. Be interesting to hear from others on this, Michael |
Another option is there is a fellow in Italy selling a replacement display on eBay. I purchased (2). I haven't installed it yet but there is plenty of information about it here:
