Using TNC direct on a Kenwood TM-D7A (G)

Hello all.? I bought a?Kenwood TM-D7A (G) in good shape.? I'm wanting to connect it directly to a Pi or PC and use the TNC for YAAC.? I have the serial cable and I plan to use a USB GPS on the computer side to let YAAC port position data.? Where do I go in the configuration to tell it about this TNC?? Any other hints or knowledge on this radio is welcome!? This was one of those unicorn radios that came up cheap and I think it is still useful.? Thanks!

Greetings.

Using a Kenwood D7A HT with YAAC is easy. How you do it depends on how you want your HT working. In any case, you need to connect the HT's command serial port to the computer running YAAC.

If you still want to see the standard APRS display on your HT (even though you have YAAC available), put the HT in APRS mode and use the Kenwood port driver in YAAC. You won't be able to _transmit_ anything from YAAC, but you will be able to display everything received.

If you want to transmit traffic with YAAC, put the HT in PACKET mode (same as you would if you wanted to access an old-style packet BBS), and use the Serial_TNC port driver in YAAC, with the KISS command set to TNC2-compatible. Assuming you also checked Transmit on the Serial_TNC configuration, YAAC will now have full functionality to send beacons, messages, and anything else you choose to transmit. And YAAC can emulate the D710 mobile rig's APRS mode display if you still want that (just on the computer screen, not the HT screen).

Hope this helps.
